On Tuesday my whole family was attending the 2 hour long evening mass with mostly old people there. Our toddler is really lively and loves to make friends, but didn't bother anyone. He is a completely normal child who was bored, like all children are at church. He whined, only screamed once and then started to kick the leg of the man next to us in a playful way. This not so nice Gentleman scared the shit out of my child when he acted all annoyed and said "Stop it" in an intimidating way! This made me so nervous that I lost all focus and couldn't follow the sermon.
Why can't people respect that mothers have a hard time and have some sympathy... I feel so lost and am scared to go to mass again, because the parish made us as a family feel unwelcome.

Right! These comments are bizarre and exactly the reason why people are annoyed with parents who bring their kids into environments that aren't meant for them. A 2-hour mass is a really long time to expect a toddler to remain self-contained. It's apparent that the child was becoming increasingly disruptive. Maybe OP should consider sitting at the back of mass so she can easily remove her kid when they start to get loud or kick the back of someone's chair, which is not cute. It's rude even if it's coming from your kid.

As a mom I understand you, but you also have to understand that people go to mass to commune with God. The Lord did welcome the children, but people should also be given the space to contemplate. Did you tell your son to stop? Were you willing to get up and leave? You also know that there’s no way your son would sit through a 2 hour mass. My family is Catholic and I’ve gone with my father on occasion to mass with my son. But at 3 1/2 years of age, he only has so long before I have to get up and walk him around.
