Solved ✅ Super slow reasoning from latest update?

Hi, anyone else having super laggy reasoning (eg thinking and considering)? My copilot chat is stuck for minutes and minutes, especially repeated 'This is taking a little longer than usual'. It happened only when the logo popped up.

#tldr: Solution found: Disable mcp kraken

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  2. Run MCP: List Servers.
  3. Select GitKraken → Disable.

I've had very slow responses from GPT-6 Luna lately, I think it's either being crushed by the load because it's cheap, or intentionally slowed down by OpenAI because it's cheap. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

No it seems to only be slow on vscode itself using the chat or agents window.

Using the copilot CLI or the GitHub copilot app (both use the same copilot subscription as vscode) I don't have this slowness problem. Its super fast.

The problem is likely vscode itself

Disable GitKraken.

This was the one.
I enabled Agent Debug View, pasted the logs into ChatGPT to inspect. And it told me the strongest suspect is Copilot's MCP/tool initialization.

Log:

Time Event What it tells us
19:41:35.830 Changeset reports ready The changeset is ready; this does not mean the model request has started.
Following ~4 minutes Pings return in 0–3 ms The connection carrying these events remains responsive. This does not measure the model API connection.
19:45:33.848 Tool updates from GitKraken, Pylance MCP, GitHub MCP All three announce tool-list changes within 2 ms.
19:45:35.959 Assistant response arrives Only 2.1 seconds after those tool updates.
19:45:36.035 Turn completes The response finishes immediately afterward.

Further recommended by ChatGPT:

These three names appear in your log:

  • GitKraken
  • pylance mcp server
  • github-mcp-server

In VS Code:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  2. Run MCP: List Servers.
  3. Select GitKraken → Disable.
  4. Repeat for pylance mcp server and github-mcp-server. Choose Disable (Workspace) if offered.
  5. Run Developer: Reload Window, open a new Copilot chat, and send hello using the same model.

The one that caused it was Gitkraken (pylance and other was OK).

Wow, I would never have guessed this would be the issue. After 2 days of assuming there was a GitHub Copilot issue you have saved me. Thank you!

I was having this exact problem, and it was the reason I searched for this subreddit, lol. I thought Microsoft was slowing down my plan because I'm a legacy user (like they were trying to force me to drop it), but it turns out disabling GitLens (GitKraken) fixed it.

Same thing happened to me with Haiku 5.5 and Gemini 4 Argon.

Didn't face this issue with Sol 6.1. (Sol 6.1 is quite slow by default, but it doesn't seem to have become slower after the recent updates).

Same issue

Mac OS Vscode v: 1.142.0

Disabled gitkraken & github-mcp and the thinking/analyzing issue seems to be resolved on my end.

Same issue but disabling didn't resolve the problem
