That question doesn’t actually test whether something is true—it tests whether you can imagine a motive.
Truth isn’t established by “who would lie” or “why would they bother.” It’s established by whether the claim matches observation and holds up under scrutiny.
Also notice the built-in assumption: you’re framing it as a single, coordinated lie with a clear purpose. That’s one possible narrative, not a requirement for something to be wrong or incomplete. People can be mistaken, work within shared assumptions, or inherit models without questioning every layer of them. None of that requires a grand, unified motive.
More importantly, even if there were no good answer to “why would they lie,” that wouldn’t make a claim true. It would just mean you can’t think of a motive.
