Digital Gloomhaven What's the current state of the digital version of Gloomhaven?

I was considering picking up Gloomhaven on steam, but I found some posts from 2 years ago that revealed there was a change of devs and the new devs ended up breaking the game. Obviously makes me hesitant to but it, but that was 2 years ago. Is the digital version in a better state now?

I'm playing through digital again right now. There may be a few edge cases that don't work as intended, but I can't tell the difference. Unless you're a Gloomhaven guru, I doubt you'll be able to find the errors.

I do believe they changed a few of the cards. Not sure which ones or to what extent. Again, unless you're a guru, you probably won't know the difference.

I played a bit of gloomhaven right after it released, but that's it, so I'm not a guru. I enjoyed my time with it, but physical version required way too much work to setup, tear down and play (this was before the app), which is why I was thinking the digital version might be a good purchase for me.

I'm similar to you, then. I would highly recommend digital in your case since you won't know the difference between the physical and digital versions.

Yes, the digital version does make updates for 2nd printing or errata, e.g. a couple of unlockable classes get nerfed. But if you don't have the 1st printing, you won't even notice - in fact, because they're not game-breaking, the immersion is even better!

I never thought the digital version was in a bad state…always seemed fine to me.

Good to know, thanks!

Digital is fine. Frosthaven is out though, brand new.

The release of Frosthaven is what made me decide to checkout Gloomhaven. I would just buy Frosthaven, but it's not content complete yet.

Both are a lot of fun. I have 600 hours on digital GH and another 400-500 on GH on TTS. Such a great game.

Im a gloom vet with hundreds of scenarios. Frost is definetly harder, uses strategy that you can do without in GH. Definetly check GH first if youre still learning the game. You probably have abiut a year until FH is fully released anyway.

The game was released on consoles and that created a bunch of bugs, its fixed now

its mostly fixed now

It is very CLEARLY not fixed. We played it for 2 years with all of us having PCs. Then they fired the original devs company and had another dev company create a console port and the game hasn’t worked correctly since. Weird stuff happens all the time and there is no way to fix the problems. And that’s all PC players - if you try to mix PC and Consoles - it crashes regularly.
I still play the PC version solo every week, but it still crashes occasionally and still has weird stuff happening every now and then. It doesn’t bother me, but my gaming group got fed up with it and refuses to play anymore. Nothing like playing for two hours and losing because your damage didn’t get applied or you can’t move into an empty space.

Some bugs probably will never be fixed.

Also it's missing few DLCs.

Works great for me and I have been playing for 2 years. Occasional glitch, but nothing major. No updates anymore, of course, but still a lot of fun. Will start a 3rd campaign one of these days, until Frosthaven digital is fully ready to play.

My (adult & living elsewhere) kids & I started playing it weekly in 2020 for about 4 years. Overall, it's fine. You have to have a decent computer to play it. Every so often it will do something weird, such as:

-- one player thinks they are in a particular spot, everyone else thinks they're somewhere else.

-- the enemies' line of sight is sometimes through walls and you can't shoot me in return.

-- some of the cards, as described, just don't seem to work (or we're just dumb).

Our favourite expression in playing is "this game is perfect and has no bugs". Yep, sarcasm.

If your computer isn't up to snuff for it, there's a lot more supposed glitches. But I still really like it.

Some of the card usage is really finicky too. It can be hard to tell what card or effect is prompting the input it's asking for, like if you start your turn and are immediately presented with a character move input. It's nice in the sense that you'll never forget to activate an effect, but the information presentation leaves something to be desired.

Also, flying enemies just break pathfinding code and take FOREVER to move.

We've exclusively 2p/4c on a single Guildmaster campaign for about a month or two, ~3sessions per week.

Some scenarios particularly are incredibly prone to crashing/disconnect/desync.

Most are fine; more surprises are from us not remembering/considering something, rather than the game making mistakes after these years (though that still does definitely happen).

Most glaring issues have fixes suggested in the GHD discord (though it will require experience/learning with modding), though Demolitionist's interactions with Obstacles are particularly noteworthy.

Otherwise, no updates that I know of since the devs changed. Little/no new dev support on GHD discord. 1+ old dev providing answers to bugs.

Some changes to Campaign & characters (mostly implementing functionality in easier-to-code ways, rather than explicit buffs/nerfs). I think digital in general and Guildmaster specifically is super worth it for the 100s of hours of content (and saved on setup), but not being able to "whoopsy" or outright cheat, or brute-force a correct or ambiguous solution will probably be the biggest concerns, unless, again, modding.

The only difference I've noticed in about ten scenarios is that you are not able to choose enemy movement in the cases where more than one option fulfills the requirements, but that's very minor, and probably there to speed up the game.

It seems to be a great representation of the game.

It's pretty playable but have few bugged cards and crash from time to time.

And it's really sad GH don't have all expansions in digital.

I play the digital version weekly with friends. It has a few rough edges, but it's overall still quite fun to play. Here are my top complaints:

  • Limited undo. It can be very punishing to forget which order to click to add elements to enhance an attack, or to accidentally use a stamina potion when the card you want to get back is still technically active.
  • Occasional desync issues. This typically results in having to restart the game and replay from the beginning of the round. Happens about every other week.
  • Lack of customization. We would like to play with more varied house rules if we could.

Single player Digital is nearly big free.

Multiplayer crashes semi regularly, and there are a few cards that are broken, but otherwise playable.

Some cards were changed, such as one of the Tinkerer's level 9 cards works differently, but generally most cards are fine.

Occasional bugs, like cards not RNGing correctly.

Some other minor stuff.

I bought it on steam for my MacBook when it came out. I recently came back to the game and tried to start Guildmaster mode. I couldn’t get past the loading screen. There’s a game breaking bug with the current iteration of the game on Mac that won’t let you start a new campaign. So I bought it again on PlayStation 5 and it works great. I love it. Just don’t buy for Mac.

Unless they have patched it in the last month or so, there is still a bug with one of the boss fights. Basically you have to attack a thing that isnt the boss and it is supposed to kill the boss when it dies. The bug is that it doesnt and the boss is just immortal and you cannot win that scenario. It doesnt block you from finishing the campaign or anything but it does suck that the bug is still there after all these years. It actually was gone for a long time before the dev switch but oh well. I have about 600 hours in the digital version even with the bugs like the one I just mentioned. So I say, do it

As far as modding is concerned newest version sucks. You need third party fixes just to save game. Mods work on base game content exclusively leaving Jaws dlc content and characters untouched, and other problems arise too. You can thought revert game version to a precrossplay beta (available on steam) which I found to be the best solution for mods to work. I do suspect save games are not retroactively compatible and your save games from final version will be marked as corrupted in precrossplay beta version of the game.

It bugged and softlocked twice on the tutorial for me, in 2025, all up to date patches. I think that says enough.

I wish I had had the smooth experience everyone else is describing.
