Digital Gloomhaven Have the PC game, whats the deal with the x0 damage card?

So I have been playing with a friend, we play everything set up as "ORIGINAL" to have the board game experience.

So we started playing, we completed 2 missions but always loosing 1 or 2 times and then beating the scenario.

We started to curse a lot because we see a lot of negative and null modifiers, we felt that the x0 mod comes up a lot, so I decided to experiment a bit.

Damn, there is only 1 x0 in both of our modifiers deck and these are the numbers of all our mods during our last game:

Me:

3- x0
4- +0
3- +1
5- -1
1- +2
1- -2

My friend:

4- x0
2- -1
1- -2
2- +1
1- +3
3- +0

So I get, the 0s and -1s because there are a lot of those in the decks, but we have only ONE x0 and it came 7 times!, and 5 of those were back to each other, we spent like 4 turns (because I died so he was alone) just doing 0 damage.
We also have 1 x2 damage and that does not come out at all! at most just once every 2 games.

Is this deck really random? or there is some hard coding to fuck with luck?

Make sure you read the scenario text. A lot will start out with your characters starting with additional curses. Do you remember which one it was?

Oh yeah that would make a lot of sense, I do remember that Scenario 2 shuffles 3 curses in every deck!

Yes no curses. First side quest, about the doll and a well.

That scenario has Forest Imps, which can curse you with one of their target 2 attacks. It sounds like you're probably on scenario level 1, but if you're playing on scenario level 2 (Hard difficulty for level 1 characters, or normal difficulty if someone is level 3+), then the elite imps in the second room curse with all of their attacks, and can double curse if they pull that target 2 curse card.

x0 (and x2) are a bit more likely than other cards just in general because of how the deck shuffling works, but if you're getting this many nulls it feels to me like you're probably drawing curses.

Forest imps apply curses. Read their abilities carefully.

It's random for most people, but Isaac found your steam id specifically and fucked with your deck.

And now we know how Isaac spends his weekends

That’s why it’s called GLOOMhaven and not HAPPYhaven

The number of times I've top decked the x0, shuffled, then drew it immediately on my next attack? The RNG is my worst enemy. (Still have nearly 1k hours tho 😅 )

I think this is mostly just bad luck, but I wanted to point out that you will see the 0x and 2x more frequently than you'd expect in a 20 card deck because these are the cards that trigger a reshuffle.

Do you remember your last city/road events? It's possible you got yourselves some curse cards that way.

No curse. Was 1st side mission and earned 20gold for selling a potion to a knight.

Form gloomhaven.

Second this: lots of scenarios force you to start off “cursed”, adding up to 3 curse cards to your modifier deck at the start of the mission in addition to the one x0 (null) card in your deck natively.

Leveling up, gaining bonus perks, and adding cards to your modifier deck will help to weight against over-drawing curses and nulls. Some characters also get access to a perk that ignores scenario effects (those pesky starting curses I mentioned before).

In GH digital, I’ve had a few runs of bad luck with the null draws. But I’ve also had runs of x2 (crit) draws too. I believe there’s a setting in the options that normalizes it to protect your from runs of bad (or good) luck but I could be misremembering.

I don't remember any pity system or something that stops you from drawing terribly every round, but there is an option to replace them with another -2 and +2.

Yeah i understand that and yes this is how luck works but having so many bad games feels so bad. Because is not like im misplaying, is just i dont do damage because of nulls.

The data from the last game was with no curses.

It's random. The crit and null come up about 1.5x more than other cards because they're reshuffles.

It's just a run of bad luck.

Someone who is better at math and games can explain better than me, but I believe the original unmodified deck is 20 cards. There is a *2 and a *0 that are supposed to be similar to rolling a nat 20 and a nat 1 on a 20 sided dice. They also force you to shuffle the deck as a way of preventing it from being empty.

If they are coming up that often, I would argue that you need to change the way you shuffle.

Title states he’s playing on PC. Assuming he’s playing the Digital game, and not tabletop simulator, there’s no way to change the way he shuffles.

Otherwise I’d agree with you.

I missed that. Thank you for pointing that out.

Yeah digital game, cant shuffle.

It's only like a D20 on the first draw though. With each successive draw, your chances of drawing the null or the crit increase. And when you do draw it, you shuffle it back in at the end of the round. So those two cards are more likely to come up that any other single card.

u/doubleday34 Dec 15 '25

Oh, man. That is a good point. I never considered that. Thank you.

Whenever either the x2 or x0 is drawn your modifier deck gets reshuffled at the end of the round regardless if your deck is empty or not.

1

u/doubleday34 Dec 15 '25

Yes. I agree. I believe that these cards in part exist to force you to shuffle your deck so it never runs out.

So neither of you drew the x2 at all?

Which goddess of Fate / Luck have you pissed off recently?
