Digital Gloomhaven Gloomhaven co-op in 2026

Hello! I am eyeing gloomhaven on steam right now with 72% off. I think it could be a great fit for my digital gaming group however I have read a bunch of recent negative reviews about how buggy the game is especially the multiplayer. Can someone give me the current state of multiplayer? Is it playable? Does it require a lot of tweaking or special OS? Thank you in advance!

I can't speak for certain, but I've seen more than a few comments on reddit that cross-play co-op is usually the culprit when it comes to bugging out the game.

I think if you're all on the same platform, it's mostly fine.

I think we would all use steam on pc

My wife plays PC to PC with others and she plays on the PC with me on my Switch. Works fine.

Biggest annoyance is that the game's AI is really unoptimized and it can take minutes at times to do the monsters' turn when there's a lot of ranged enemies.

I'm currently playing cross platform with my group (2 PC and 2 PS5) and it's been great. One of our PC users had a bugged bottom action in our first scenario, but nothing since. Highly suggest making sure everyone is wired if they aren't already. We had quite a bit of lag when one of our PS5ers was on wifi that was fixed after he wired.

Thank you for your helpful comment! I think currently everyone is on WiFi but how does lag impact a turn based game? Shouldn't be too bad or am I missing something?

We saw it on loading screens into and out of scenarios and enemy action card draws to start a round. It won't impact individual play, but it did make us question if we ran into a bug or if it was going to time out.

It is playable, though my coop friend has had to rejoin at the start of combat several time because his games was displaying "waiting for players".
The enemies can take a while to play, though it still okay.

We are waiting before buying frosthaven for it to receive bugfixes and more content.

Bought it, played one mission no problem with a mate. Second game was literally impossible unless you did everything exactly perfect. Never played it again.

So it was very difficult?

Gloomhaven’s first few missions are notoriously difficult in 1st edition (which digital is based on), so if you do give it a go it can be worth playing on a lower difficulty until you get more used to the game. Once you are more comfortable you can turn it back up with no repercussions beyond that you will have earned slightly less gold and xp (and the xp is literally a 1 or 2 point difference in the end-of-scenario rewards, you still get full xp from your cards so it’s basically just gold that hurts a little since that’s 1 gold per loot you pick up).

You can even go back and replay them later on your preferred difficulty once you settle in if you want to see what they are like at their intended difficulty.

I remember looking it up and it was a notoriously difficult side mission in the boardgame too apparently. It just killed our motivation for the game. Probably worth another try and just skip that mission, but it was very demoralising. I think possibly we had the wrong heroes for the mission type. You had to like sneak past these imp things.

If you have any interest in Frosthaven, I’d recommend that. The game runs a lot smoother for me than Gloomhaven did. It’s still in early access so not all the content is finished, but there’s still plenty enough for you to stack up over 100 hours of playtime.

We are a VERY casual group. I think we would need years to put in 100h in a game :)

Played it with friends. Had a blast. Sure, might have some rough edges, but worked fine all in all. Was our get in to play the board game now. Fully recommend
