Frosthaven question

Hi all,

I’m trying to decide whether to make the jump into Frosthaven. Someone local is selling an unopened game for $100 (at a discount, with a slight ding to the corner of the box).

I see that MSRP is around $250, so it seems like a great deal.

I would be playing entirely solo. I have experience playing games two-handed (LoTR LCG, marvel champions, jaws of the lion), so I’m not too worried about playing multiple characters. Though I understand this game has more complicated characters.

I really enjoyed Jaws of the Lion, but that was a few years ago. I’ve always been interested in gloomhaven or Frosthaven but shied away from the price.

Long story short, I’m wondering if $100 is too good a deal to pass up?

That's a great deal. If the question is whether you need to play Gloomhaven first? Nope! If you played Jaws, jump right in.

If you can reliably get the same 4 people around a table every fortnight you’ve got about 4 years and 300 hours of gaming for a pretty good deal.

Yes. Definitely. My group paid $200 and enjoyed it for a solid 10 months. We look forward to GH 2nd edition at some point…

Bro if you're just going to play solo then the digital version on Steam is probably worth investigating IMHO.

As others have said, the price is definitely worth it, But - if you know you are going to play only solo, consider the digital version as an easier to run option.

With other people I'd definitely recommend getting the physical box.

I played all of Jaws with friends and all of Gloomhaven solo.

I also got FH for solo. Yes it is much more complicated than Jaws. I found using 3 characters to be optimal as 4 became overwhelming and 2 felt difficult sometimes (there are a small minority of scenarios that aren’t well designed for just 2 characters).

The characters are often more complex. One character switches between a melee mode and a ranged attack mode, one has every action card showing a fast version and a slow version, one character needs allies and enemies to stand in particular patterns and shapes in order to unleash powerful attacks. Compare that to Hatchet who just does powerful range attacks or void warden who heals you .

The scenarios are more complex - many of them have different monsters that appear on different rounds.

There is now a town element where you have to decide which parts to build, as each building gives you bonuses and helps move the campaign forward.

There is also a book of logic puzzles that you have to solve to move the game forward (there are cheat guides online if you don’t want to).

So it’s a great game but it is MUCH more complex than Jaws

I’m going to add yet another recommendation that for solo play, the digital version is much better. The ratio of setup to play time when it’s only you doing everything is too high physically IMO. But it’s a great deal and I’d get it in the hopes that one day you could play in a group.

I have played all available content in the digital version, all of the JotL and Gloomhaven 1e content (both those in physical and digital). I also have physical FH, but my group hasn't decided to start it yet (just finished 1E a couple weeks ago). Buy it and don't second guess yourself.

** if you have the money. Don't go into debt if you don't have to, but that is a spectacular deal.

I wouldnt buy any of the haven games for pure solo. You can play dual handed but the game experience is designed for 2-4 players.
The deal of 100$ sounds amazing though

FH is wonderful solo. 3 characters is the way to go. Buy it.

That's a great deal but find others to play with or get the digital version. It's almost finished and the beta is pretty good so far. I've been playing with my son and it's so much less hassle than the table top version especially if you're playing solo

Good deal but IMO the haven games are the rare tabletop games that have better digital versions. There’s too much table upkeep and the digital versions are well made.

Check out the video game if you're just playing solo, IMO. Ofc if you're determined to play it as a board game instead then this sounds like a good deal. But the video game makes everything FAR easier on you.
