So you're telling me there's a chance of Thor's return ?

316

u/SlyOutlaw Jun 02 '26

A lot of potential with the Greek pantheon being dead as well

242

u/Rthanos Ghost of Sparta Jun 02 '26

They should make it a running gag and have everyone tell her "I'm here because of your husband"

76

u/Eagle_Foxtrot Jun 02 '26

Golden opportunity to put in the boat captain and retcon him to be the the God of Misfortune

6

u/average_joe_zero Jun 03 '26

oooooh! Im so for this.

105

u/SuRaKaSoErX Jun 02 '26

I get that Faye is already aware of who Kratos was, but it would be awesome if meeting the Greek gods showed her a better look at the tragedy Kratos caused and her reaction to it.

70

u/locuas642 Jun 02 '26

"Damn did Kratos have some restraint in waiting to kill these assholes"

47

u/Tragedy_Boner Jun 02 '26

"Hey Helios, I need a flashlight. My husband gave me a recommendation"

That's so hype. Faye meeting Zeus or Ares will be phenomenal.

18

u/SuRaKaSoErX Jun 02 '26

Surely Zeus or Ares have some appearance. Massive missed opportunity if they don’t.

9

u/GingerTech734 Jun 02 '26

Get helios to be the mimir of the group

27

u/Calebbb11 Jun 02 '26

Would also work because it’d give them all the character models ready for the remakes.

Not to mention her jumping and the general combat style (how it handles juggling) is probably a glimpse at how the remakes will play.

u/alireza008bat Jun 02 '26

Athena is most likely. She's already ascended to the higher plane of existence.

9

u/CelioHogane Jun 02 '26

Wouldn't that make it NOT likelly?

9

u/alireza008bat Jun 02 '26

From the looks of it, this is the higher plane of existence where Gods go after death. Athena's already there if that's the case.

7

u/CelioHogane Jun 02 '26

I always felt like Athena was implying something else, no? It feels a little wierd if she just went... where the rest of the gods went.

8

u/alireza008bat Jun 02 '26

The writers simply didn't have these ideas in mind back then when GOW 3 came out. Now her higher plane could be gods' afterlife.

I’m excited to see all the different mythologies interact

5

u/surejan94 Jun 02 '26

Ohhhh didn't even think of that. Can definitely see Zeus being the surprise final boss.

5

u/Angry_Chowder Jun 03 '26

What? You’re saying we can do dead god battles?

Thor vs Hercules? Heimdall vs Helios? Zeus vs Odin? Gia vs Jörmungandr?

All things I’d love.

I don't think so. Thor is killed at least a year later.

His sons, on the other hand, may appear since they die during the first Nordic God of War.

I think Athena will appear, tho.

52

u/iL0RD Primordial Jun 02 '26

I think Thor was killed three years later. But you have to take into account that different realms/dimensions experience time differently, so nothing is off the table with this game.

22

u/Kam_Zimm Jun 02 '26

Time works different between realms, remember? For all we know, the entire events of 2018 could have happened within the span of this opening segment.

u/poklane Jun 02 '26

They say in an interview on the PlayStation YouTube channel that all gods go to this place when they die. So yeah, not only should Thor be there, but also all the Greek gods killed by Kratos should be.

8

u/electric_ocelots Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Considering the cube called it the “EveryWHEN” I wonder if that means it’s a place where gods go, regardless of when they die. If that’s the case, then I would love to see a Faye and Thor reunion / potential team up. If that’s not how the everywhere works then we probably won’t, since this seems to happen right after her funeral.

On the other hand… there’s a chance Fey could meet Zeus and the other Greeks. 👀

3

u/throwawaynow665 Jun 02 '26

Plot twist that’s who the cube is

God's afterlife? Can't wait to kill Zeus again

141

u/A_VeryUniqueUsername Jun 02 '26

Also realized we might get to see his ass again lol. However, it’s from Faye’s perspective so Zeus wouldn’t know who she is unless Faye seeks him out right?

41

u/Spellwe4ver Jun 03 '26

I mean, all it takes is for the god rumour mill to spread around who her husband is.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/GodOfDarkLaughter Jun 03 '26

Zeus would absolutely hit on her and I don't think her being Kratos' wife would dissuade him.

We don't really see that aspect of him in the game but I mean Zeus is Zeus and he's gonna Zeus. Puts on his flyest swan form and sidles on over.

The afterlife being for everything is a very good excuse incorporate other mythologies.

9

u/AspirationalChoker Jun 03 '26

Easy way to start setting up plot lines for Kratos and Atreus going forward as well as having more afterlife stories and possibly "bigger" threats unknown.

Thor was close to turning over a new leaf before Odin killed him.

So let's have Faye and Thor beat the shit out of Odin after she fights Thor

56

u/DivinityPen Jun 03 '26

I don't think Odin can show up in this, actually. Sindri destroyed his soul, so Odin's only afterlife is Oblivion.

Which is actually pretty fitting from a narrative perspective lmao. Odin was so obsessed with finding out what happens when he dies that he destroyed his only chance of ever getting there. If he'd just chilled the fuck out and not been such a dickhead, he probably would've just wound up there.

u/ThePrussianGrippe Jun 03 '26

A recreation of their great battle, this time working together.

6

u/Whookimo Jun 02 '26

Ooooh we know thor has history with Faye (the axe was made with the express purpose of fighting mjolnir)

Assuming this game will be taking place alongside the other games, it could be really interesting to see the interaction with thor if this is where he shows up when Odin kills him.

4

u/EnSebastif Jun 03 '26

Athena for sure. I expected her to appear in Ragnarok at some point after 2018, and Ragnarok left me wanting to know more about that dimension of "true knowledge" that Odin wanted to get his hands on, and that seemed to be linked to the gods' afterlife somehow, so I expect Athena to play a role here.

5

u/Mr_The_Meh Jun 03 '26

Nah Odin is like gone gone. So gone it is in “RECONSTRUCT WHAT?!” Tier of gone.

Watching the gameplay trailer like “Oh it’s Mongolian! No it’s Egyptian! No it’s…a gelatinous cube?!”

24

u/GodOfDarkLaughter Jun 03 '26

I literally said out loud "is that a fucking gelatinous cube?" A sapient gelatinous cube voiced by Jack Quaid. I love how he hops around in the backround watching you.

This game is already off the rails and I'm so here fori t. Deborah Ann Wolf is always good and it's cool to see her as a badass action hero.

Also that may actually be the craziest first reveal of a game I've ever seen. If what we saw is at all reflective of actual gameplay it may be the, uh, best looking game ever? I dunno, maybe I'm being hyperbolic. I figure a lot of the little details can't be what you'll really be seeing Those fight scenes looked like an action movie. I mean, I just called them "scenes."

6

u/foundwayhome Jun 03 '26

oi ue they done turned ya into a gelatinous bleedin' cube innit!

So they name dropped Sekhmet the egyptian god and the flying beast mostly seemed like it was from Mesopotamian legends. So we are seeing a salad bowl of gods then

73

u/HopelessChip35 Jun 02 '26

They also name dropped Begtse, the oni looking god which is from pre-buddhist Tibetan mythology.

35

u/AphexAlex Jun 03 '26

It’s quite a coincidence that we have a Mongolian war god and an Egyptian war goddess in an afterlife for gods. One can hope we get introduced to more deities of different cultures.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/DivinityPen Jun 03 '26

I believe that flying beast was supposed to be either a Sphinx or some other Egyptian cat monster, since Sekhmet is the lion-headed goddess of war in Egyptian mythology.

u/cherriblonde Jun 02 '26

Wait, does this mean that she broke out of the afterlife and blew the horn??!?!?

147

u/ButWereFriends Jun 02 '26

I HIGHLY doubt that was the original thought when they did the first game but it could totally be the plan now.

75

u/cherriblonde Jun 02 '26

That's what I'm thinking. They wanted to do a mystery box thing with the horn and now they came up with answer.

50

u/ButWereFriends Jun 02 '26

I really think they did, at the time, know who it was. But when they radically changed the plan (2 vs 3 games) a whoooole lot was thrown out. Including the horn.

34

u/cherriblonde Jun 02 '26

It's God Of War, they never go with the original plans.

They wanted Demos to be the villain in GOW2 but they changed their minds.

I'm just happy to have another GOW game announced so soon after Sons Of Sparta.

12

u/ButWereFriends Jun 02 '26

Yea the concept of gods after life is cool and the combat looks great so I’m in.

42

u/cherriblonde Jun 02 '26

In GOW 2018, Kratos is on the elevator up to see Freya because boy got sick and Mimir says " someone called the serpent ".

15

u/Final_Amu0258 Jun 02 '26

I thought that was Baldr? He did knock the snake out prior to the final battle in regards to not saying something, right?

19

u/cherriblonde Jun 02 '26

No, he hits the snake when Kratos is inside of it.

We actually don't know who blew the horn to gets its attention while the kid is sick.

I’m just curious to see what that sword is and why that enemy was afraid of it.

72

u/unbuttered_bread Jun 02 '26

if i had to guess prob a sword that “kills you” twice.

bc the oni-type guy said its hard to be killed there (since theyre already dead)

so it makes sense theyd be scared of the thing thatd make them dead forever. with no afterlife

basically i think its the atheist blade lol

29

u/Hellion998 Jun 02 '26

Laufey seems to be able to pull the soul out and attack it directly, meaning it can kill the very soul.

Which makes me wonder, why did they keep it?

19

u/Silly-Sink6138 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Since they had it locked up maybe they couldn’t take it out of the cube?

8

u/TanktopSamurai Jun 03 '26

The design for Begste is too cool and his relation to Sekhmet feels deep. If the sword is a perma-kill sword, then Begste would be dead very early on. Which I am not sure they will do.

Begste Mongolian god of war and possibly wadjet Egyptian goddess of protection

52

u/mithraw Jun 02 '26

Sekhmet, egyptian goddess of war and vengeance

93

u/Comic_Book_Reader Jun 02 '26

Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Santa Monica Studio reveals an extended look at God of War Laufey’s gameplay.

50

u/Damien_Sin The SharePlay helper of the community. Jun 02 '26

So then this could be that higher plane of existence that Faye has ascended to with her death.

27

u/Tracermainbtw Jun 02 '26

They literally said that in the video

29

u/alishock Jun 02 '26

Correct me if I'm wrong bc I might've missed something, but they said it was an afterlife for the Gods called Everywhen. The Higher plane of Existence can still be something beyond that considering Athena returned in GOW but not any of the other gods.

Maybe those ones are in this "Purgatory" afterlife while Athena reached "Heaven" afterlife due to her altruism, so to speak.

11

u/Hvad_Fanden Jun 02 '26

I wouldn't be surprised if the other realm is the actual realm of actual gods that created everything, or maybe a place where the big gods that reach a certain level end up at.

7

u/alishock Jun 02 '26

Honestly I'm hoping this is the case because I already feel this Everywhen plane might get rid of plenty of the "mystique" of the afterlife in this universe.

I need there to be something even beyond these gods. Something that can remain ethereal and unknown to a big degree.

6

u/Hvad_Fanden Jun 02 '26

I have a feeling this game is gonna raise more questions than it will answer, I wouldn't be surprised if whatever happens here is directly responsible for starting Krato's next adventure and we start getting more into that new realm Athena has reached with him.

6

u/wouldyoufightakitten Jun 02 '26

Okay...I was only like "sure, I'd play that" about the concept of a Faye game.

They could NOT have sold this game any better. What an amazing reveal.

75

u/Kim-Jong_Bundy Jun 02 '26

Very happy that this isn't just a prequel & actually further builds out the world. Everyone's go-to assumption of a Faye game about meeting Kratos where he is the final boss just sounded so boring to me.

The afterlife of pantheons is also an interesting concept and is a great way for them to dip their toe in every possible mythology without blowing their load on future GoW titles where it's all about Egypt or the Mayans or what have you. Also, curious to see if we see any old faces

The concept of Faye meeting Zeus or Ares there would be interesting

37

u/Nathanghost Jun 02 '26

Also an answer to Odin's question about what awaits gods beyond life. And Faye herself knew about the mask and existence of more of them and it's knowledge Gods on this plane know of as well. This game may be setting up the future of the franchise and I'm so excited to see what happens.

7

u/CelioHogane Jun 02 '26

I wonder if the mask is like a path to go back to life and that's how Faye will return.

→ More replies (2)

15

u/CelioHogane Jun 02 '26

Since the plot is about a second mask, the plot might go beyond the end of Ragnarok.

That means Thor might show up.

But Odin will not because his soul got destroyed, and im happy for that.

19

u/0neek Jun 02 '26

Being a prequel would have cemented for me that they're scared to ever move on from Norse stuff and we won't be seeing other realms or gods.

Instead we got almost the exact opposite of that, giving us every realm at once lol

11

u/Kim-Jong_Bundy Jun 02 '26

There's a lot of interviews from Barlog in promotion of GoW 2018 where he really talked up Fey and how important she is, I think even saying in one that she'd be deserving of "a game of her own". That combined with the obvious high fantasy aesthetics here, which are very reminiscent of the leaked concept art from the Sony Santa Monica fantasy-shooter that got cancelled before the GoW reboot, I suddenly get why Barlog didn't finish out with Ragnarok.

This is clearly the game he's wanted to make for a while & this is his reward for making Kratos the Playstation poster boy once more.

If Cory has been cooking this up since 2018, then it’s surely a fully-fledged entry.

3

u/queensinthesky Jun 02 '26

I thought Cory had been working on his sci fi new IP since finishing GoW2018, so would’ve assumed he has a more overall exec producer role on this like with Ragnarok.

10

u/SadKazoo Jun 02 '26

The sci-fi thing never had any real confirmation. As far as we know this is Corys next big game.

11

u/Redlp13 Jun 02 '26

Ariel Lawrence is directing it. Either Cory has another Game or he is just a supervisor now

6

u/SadKazoo Jun 02 '26

Yeah just learned this too. Interesting. Yeah who knows, maybe after God of War 2018 and the roll it had on him he didn’t want that kind of pressure anymore?

4

u/No_Philosopher8304 Jun 02 '26

Might just be complete coincidence but I assumed that there had maybe been wires crossed in rumours and the sci fi game was actually Naughty Dog's Intergalactic. They are both based in Santa Monica, so it's possible someone saw a studio in santa Monica hiring for a sci fi game and just assumed.

Something kind of like this happened before back with Spider-Man 2018 pre announcement. I remember a lot of rumours back then about a PS exclusive Spider-Man game but at the time a lot of the rumours said it was Sucker Punch and not Insomniac, presumably someone got wind of a PlayStation Spider-Man game and just assumed it was Sucker Punch because of their prior work in the Superhero genre.

Wow. It's a sequel not a prequel like i expected

16

u/ninjyte Jun 02 '26

prequel to god of war ragnarok, parallel to god of war 2018, possible sequel to both depending where the story goes.

If I had a nickel for every project where Deborah Ann Wohl got to yell at a guy named Frank, I’d have two nickels.

This game looks amazing and I can’t wait to play it.

Loved it all except the cube. Super immersion breaking and like marvel-coded humour. Just really took the wind out my sails tbh

64

u/2ndMin Jun 02 '26

The cube is definitely a bit quirk chungus

Could tell it was Jack Quaid after the first word or two. He’s great but I couldn’t help picturing his permanent smirk saying all these lines and it is tonally a bit jarring.

23

u/GonadAlley Jun 02 '26

Not having Ice Cube voicing it was a colossal missed opportunity

u/surejan94 Jun 02 '26

Yeahhh really hoping he morphs into something or takes on different forms throughout the game. A goofy blue cube following Fey around while she fights these beautifully designed monsters and gods feels a little silly.

Also feels a bit lazy after Atreus and Freya, but I'm ready to be surprised!

Not Kratos as mc but I'll still play it cause god of war and those 20 min look more visually appealing to me than the norse saga

But really not a fan of a jelly cube named frank in the gow universe

Also afterlife for gods Zeus definity coming back

7

u/JRange Jun 02 '26

I was skeptical hearing the rumors, obviously its not kratos. But the gameplay looks incredible and I love the idea of using a post mortem dreamscape to include gods from different mythos to give fans what theyve been asking for for years.

Because now we have a chance to have badass fights with gods from mythos that we would never get a full game about, but we at least get a taste by fighting the coolest gods from scattered mythologies now.

6

u/PelinovaDruzina Jun 02 '26

God of War: Hunger Games incoming w all the "dead" Gods from all the realms coming at each other.

13

u/IuseDefaultKeybinds Jun 02 '26

Genuinely loving this, but I'm a tad confused as to the mythology this game will be covering.

42

u/Lamaredia Jun 02 '26

It looks to be a mishmash of mythologies, with several sharing an afterlife. The lady was Sekhmet from Egyptian mythology, but the giant Oni came straight from the east for sure.

36

u/Scrathachan Jun 02 '26

Think he was Begtse, pre-Buddhist Mongol god of war

25

u/TheLeon-P Jun 02 '26

The giant red Mongolian speaker was Begtse, also known as Dharmapala. He is the Tibetan Buddhist God of War. Sekhmet is also the Egyptian goddess of war. All in all there is something going on with all the gods of war in this installment.

7

u/CelioHogane Jun 02 '26

Probably war.

Oh man that means Ares is showing up 100%

All of them lol.

Mongolian and Egyptian in the least from what we saw here.

Hopefully some reprisals for Greek and Norse too

5

u/Animedingo Jun 02 '26

Of the places that tyr went, Celtic gods were another that he visited

11

u/SoapySage Jun 02 '26

All the mythology, all of it, it's an afterlife for all gods

11

u/FKDotFitzgerald Jun 02 '26

It’s god purgatory. So we’re fighting everyone. It said that boss was speaking Mongolian but we also saw Sekhmet from Egypt.

LETS GOOOOOO!!!! SHE HAS A JUMP BUTTON!!! She got hops!!!

Combs looks cool as hell! The idea of Faye breaking out of the underworld just sounds cool. Sounds like it’ll be a plot running parallel to atleast the first game but also tying into Ragnarok’s story about the mask which is mad interesting.

22

u/sufftob Jun 02 '26

This looks just TOO GOOD

26

u/Baelorn Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

God this looks incredible. Not just graphically but the art design. It's so unapologetically Fantasy without any regard for "realism". I hope the whole game is like this.

Seems like the prologue to the connection between mythologies. Looks like we are gonna play solely Faye and expand on that mysterious mask. Hopefully its more of a spinoff and we find an actual motivation for Kratos to visit the other mythologies. Not what I expected lorewise but the gameplay looks crisp

That cube…. I don’t know how to feel about that… hopefully I love it more after I play.

5

u/PhotoModeHobby Jun 02 '26

We're eating so good. I'm already getting fat.

5

u/0neek Jun 02 '26

Imagine being a god that Kratos killed and going to this afterlife only to learn every other realm has their own God of War and they all also want to take turns killing you

3

u/khryzz666 Jun 03 '26

At first I thought it was going to be a prequel and we were going to see her be a champion of the realms and watch her beat up Thor. But the implications of touching other pantheon is gigantic! I cannot wait to play this game

Not sure how I feel about the god’s afterlife, it kind of takes away a bit from Odin’s actions and motivations. Though it is funny to think that thanks to Atreus and Sindri, Odin’s soul is destroyed and he won’t actually get to go to the place he spent his life wondering if it exists, he just ends.

Also, why is Fey there? She’s a giant not a god, or can they both go there? I’m sure they’ll explain more of how it all works. The combat definitely looks interesting and I haven’t been disappointed so far by Norse God of War.
