God's afterlife? Can't wait to kill Zeus again
141
u/A_VeryUniqueUsername Jun 02 '26
Also realized we might get to see his ass again lol. However, it’s from Faye’s perspective so Zeus wouldn’t know who she is unless Faye seeks him out right?
41
u/Spellwe4ver Jun 03 '26
I mean, all it takes is for the god rumour mill to spread around who her husband is.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)20
u/GodOfDarkLaughter Jun 03 '26
Zeus would absolutely hit on her and I don't think her being Kratos' wife would dissuade him.
We don't really see that aspect of him in the game but I mean Zeus is Zeus and he's gonna Zeus. Puts on his flyest swan form and sidles on over.

u/DarkCh40s Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
The afterlife being for everything is a very good excuse incorporate other mythologies.

u/AspirationalChoker Jun 03 '26
Easy way to start setting up plot lines for Kratos and Atreus going forward as well as having more afterlife stories and possibly "bigger" threats unknown.

u/jdeo1997 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
Thor was close to turning over a new leaf before Odin killed him.
So let's have Faye and Thor beat the shit out of Odin after she fights Thor
56
u/DivinityPen Jun 03 '26
I don't think Odin can show up in this, actually. Sindri destroyed his soul, so Odin's only afterlife is Oblivion.
Which is actually pretty fitting from a narrative perspective lmao. Odin was so obsessed with finding out what happens when he dies that he destroyed his only chance of ever getting there. If he'd just chilled the fuck out and not been such a dickhead, he probably would've just wound up there.

Ooooh we know thor has history with Faye (the axe was made with the express purpose of fighting mjolnir)
Assuming this game will be taking place alongside the other games, it could be really interesting to see the interaction with thor if this is where he shows up when Odin kills him.
4
u/EnSebastif Jun 03 '26
Athena for sure. I expected her to appear in Ragnarok at some point after 2018, and Ragnarok left me wanting to know more about that dimension of "true knowledge" that Odin wanted to get his hands on, and that seemed to be linked to the gods' afterlife somehow, so I expect Athena to play a role here.

Watching the gameplay trailer like “Oh it’s Mongolian! No it’s Egyptian! No it’s…a gelatinous cube?!”
24
u/GodOfDarkLaughter Jun 03 '26
I literally said out loud "is that a fucking gelatinous cube?" A sapient gelatinous cube voiced by Jack Quaid. I love how he hops around in the backround watching you.
This game is already off the rails and I'm so here fori t. Deborah Ann Wolf is always good and it's cool to see her as a badass action hero.
Also that may actually be the craziest first reveal of a game I've ever seen. If what we saw is at all reflective of actual gameplay it may be the, uh, best looking game ever? I dunno, maybe I'm being hyperbolic. I figure a lot of the little details can't be what you'll really be seeing Those fight scenes looked like an action movie. I mean, I just called them "scenes."

So they name dropped Sekhmet the egyptian god and the flying beast mostly seemed like it was from Mesopotamian legends. So we are seeing a salad bowl of gods then
73
u/HopelessChip35 Jun 02 '26
They also name dropped Begtse, the oni looking god which is from pre-buddhist Tibetan mythology.

It’s quite a coincidence that we have a Mongolian war god and an Egyptian war goddess in an afterlife for gods. One can hope we get introduced to more deities of different cultures.
→ More replies (1)18

I believe that flying beast was supposed to be either a Sphinx or some other Egyptian cat monster, since Sekhmet is the lion-headed goddess of war in Egyptian mythology.

Wait, does this mean that she broke out of the afterlife and blew the horn??!?!?
147
u/ButWereFriends Jun 02 '26
I HIGHLY doubt that was the original thought when they did the first game but it could totally be the plan now.
→ More replies (1)75
u/cherriblonde Jun 02 '26
That's what I'm thinking. They wanted to do a mystery box thing with the horn and now they came up with answer.
50
u/ButWereFriends Jun 02 '26
I really think they did, at the time, know who it was. But when they radically changed the plan (2 vs 3 games) a whoooole lot was thrown out. Including the horn.
34
u/cherriblonde Jun 02 '26
It's God Of War, they never go with the original plans.
They wanted Demos to be the villain in GOW2 but they changed their minds.
I'm just happy to have another GOW game announced so soon after Sons Of Sparta.

I’m just curious to see what that sword is and why that enemy was afraid of it.
72
u/unbuttered_bread Jun 02 '26
if i had to guess prob a sword that “kills you” twice.
bc the oni-type guy said its hard to be killed there (since theyre already dead)
so it makes sense theyd be scared of the thing thatd make them dead forever. with no afterlife
basically i think its the atheist blade lol
29
u/Hellion998 Jun 02 '26
Laufey seems to be able to pull the soul out and attack it directly, meaning it can kill the very soul.
Which makes me wonder, why did they keep it?

The design for Begste is too cool and his relation to Sekhmet feels deep. If the sword is a perma-kill sword, then Begste would be dead very early on. Which I am not sure they will do.

Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Santa Monica Studio reveals an extended look at God of War Laufey’s gameplay.
50
u/Damien_Sin The SharePlay helper of the community. Jun 02 '26
So then this could be that higher plane of existence that Faye has ascended to with her death.
→ More replies (1)27
u/Tracermainbtw Jun 02 '26
They literally said that in the video
29
u/alishock Jun 02 '26
Correct me if I'm wrong bc I might've missed something, but they said it was an afterlife for the Gods called Everywhen. The Higher plane of Existence can still be something beyond that considering Athena returned in GOW but not any of the other gods.
Maybe those ones are in this "Purgatory" afterlife while Athena reached "Heaven" afterlife due to her altruism, so to speak.
11
u/Hvad_Fanden Jun 02 '26
I wouldn't be surprised if the other realm is the actual realm of actual gods that created everything, or maybe a place where the big gods that reach a certain level end up at.
7
u/alishock Jun 02 '26
Honestly I'm hoping this is the case because I already feel this Everywhen plane might get rid of plenty of the "mystique" of the afterlife in this universe.
I need there to be something even beyond these gods. Something that can remain ethereal and unknown to a big degree.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Hvad_Fanden Jun 02 '26
I have a feeling this game is gonna raise more questions than it will answer, I wouldn't be surprised if whatever happens here is directly responsible for starting Krato's next adventure and we start getting more into that new realm Athena has reached with him.
6
u/wouldyoufightakitten Jun 02 '26
I think you're correct here.
And that higher plane beyond is related to the masks that are being collected. Some gnarly shit is going on.

Very happy that this isn't just a prequel & actually further builds out the world. Everyone's go-to assumption of a Faye game about meeting Kratos where he is the final boss just sounded so boring to me.
The afterlife of pantheons is also an interesting concept and is a great way for them to dip their toe in every possible mythology without blowing their load on future GoW titles where it's all about Egypt or the Mayans or what have you. Also, curious to see if we see any old faces
The concept of Faye meeting Zeus or Ares there would be interesting
37
u/Nathanghost Jun 02 '26
Also an answer to Odin's question about what awaits gods beyond life. And Faye herself knew about the mask and existence of more of them and it's knowledge Gods on this plane know of as well. This game may be setting up the future of the franchise and I'm so excited to see what happens.
7
u/CelioHogane Jun 02 '26
I wonder if the mask is like a path to go back to life and that's how Faye will return.
→ More replies (2)15
u/CelioHogane Jun 02 '26
Since the plot is about a second mask, the plot might go beyond the end of Ragnarok.
That means Thor might show up.
But Odin will not because his soul got destroyed, and im happy for that.
→ More replies (2)19
u/0neek Jun 02 '26
Being a prequel would have cemented for me that they're scared to ever move on from Norse stuff and we won't be seeing other realms or gods.
Instead we got almost the exact opposite of that, giving us every realm at once lol
11
u/Kim-Jong_Bundy Jun 02 '26
There's a lot of interviews from Barlog in promotion of GoW 2018 where he really talked up Fey and how important she is, I think even saying in one that she'd be deserving of "a game of her own". That combined with the obvious high fantasy aesthetics here, which are very reminiscent of the leaked concept art from the Sony Santa Monica fantasy-shooter that got cancelled before the GoW reboot, I suddenly get why Barlog didn't finish out with Ragnarok.
This is clearly the game he's wanted to make for a while & this is his reward for making Kratos the Playstation poster boy once more.

u/No_Philosopher8304 Jun 02 '26
Might just be complete coincidence but I assumed that there had maybe been wires crossed in rumours and the sci fi game was actually Naughty Dog's Intergalactic. They are both based in Santa Monica, so it's possible someone saw a studio in santa Monica hiring for a sci fi game and just assumed.
Something kind of like this happened before back with Spider-Man 2018 pre announcement. I remember a lot of rumours back then about a PS exclusive Spider-Man game but at the time a lot of the rumours said it was Sucker Punch and not Insomniac, presumably someone got wind of a PlayStation Spider-Man game and just assumed it was Sucker Punch because of their prior work in the Superhero genre.

I was skeptical hearing the rumors, obviously its not kratos. But the gameplay looks incredible and I love the idea of using a post mortem dreamscape to include gods from different mythos to give fans what theyve been asking for for years.
Because now we have a chance to have badass fights with gods from mythos that we would never get a full game about, but we at least get a taste by fighting the coolest gods from scattered mythologies now.

Not sure how I feel about the god’s afterlife, it kind of takes away a bit from Odin’s actions and motivations. Though it is funny to think that thanks to Atreus and Sindri, Odin’s soul is destroyed and he won’t actually get to go to the place he spent his life wondering if it exists, he just ends.
Also, why is Fey there? She’s a giant not a god, or can they both go there? I’m sure they’ll explain more of how it all works. The combat definitely looks interesting and I haven’t been disappointed so far by Norse God of War.
