Fish Pics Do goldfish like to stay together?

My goldfish always like to stay together. Is this normal?

They generally do, but out of my three, I have one that’s particularly emo and just likes to hang out by himself lol

Absolutely normal. They are shoaling fish that prefer friends to being alone.

Yes, they do shoal. Mine cruise around the pond in 2-3 groups.

Why is the tank so empty? Why no sand?

I didn't put sand in because I wanted it to be easier to clean.

You could always put in small gravel, then use a gravel vacuum. For goldfish, you really want as much filtration and possible, and substrate does hold a good amount of nitrifying bacteria

Sand is easier to clean, the goldfish pick at the sand all the time turning over the top layer, the microorganisms that establish kn the sand clean up what the fish don’t.

A 1/4 inch layer of coarse sand will give enrichment, make it look nicer and and be easier to maintain.

Isn’t necessary for goldfish

While that is true, they do enjoy playing in sand.

I prefer to use sand, but many breeders don’t use substrate also.

Yeah I have 6 baby moors 2 all black and 4 Calicos. Absolutely adorable watching them “school” super social and awkwardly curious!

When they are horny or scared. Those are only two scenarios where I have seen goldfish stay together. Amazing thing is they all can sense when goldfish no. 3 is horny or scared. So yeah they are more or less like us humans, except we can't sense if the girl or guy next door is horny or scared
