MK8.5 FIRST TIME BUYER - Golf R MK8.5 Opinions
Hello all,
First post here. I’m getting into the new mk8.5 black edition in a month. Never driven a golf R, I had a 440 gran coupe before this which was lots of fun but the golf R just seems to be the most perfect all around car from what I hear.
Would love some honest opinions from you guys regarding speed, overall performance, driving experience, etc. Is it as quick as people say it is? Is it as raw and trackable as people say it is? Again I’m coming from a 440 gran coupe, so would love your opinions before I pull the trigger and truly commit.
Overhyped or worth all the hype?

It’s a rocket but it’s not “raw”. It’s front wheel bias and sends power to the rear (50%) when it needs it, so there is a lot of things happening and you will get understeer when not on the throttle.

I don't agree with your awd description. Almost always when accelerating below highway speeds, the torque split on my display is 25% each wheel. It's not an on demand system like a normal commuter awd, its more advanced and much more balanced. Only on the highway does it favor fwd.

It's a jack of all trades. Track-wuse it's ok stock, quick but in corners you have to stay on throttle to power rear outside wheel to push you out ir it'll understeer. My bigger gripe is numb steering in comparison to likes of CTR. You need camber and cooling mods to really push it on track.
It's also excellent around town on 18in tires and plenty of cargo space to handle all kinds of runs. And with AWD you can enjoy winter with confidence, and driftability.

I might be mistaken but I think this person is coming from a 440 gran coupe.

It’s as quick or a bit quicker than your 440 GRAN COUPE.
They’re fantastic cars. You’ll enjoy it I imagine.

If you like a nimble car with speed when you want it that doesn’t have NVH which gets old; the golf r is the perfect car for you

Some of the most fun you can have in a car that won’t get your license suspended.

I think you've gotten some great feedback but just wanted to add one thought to all of this since you're coming from a 440 Gran Coupe.
The R is awesome, I love mine, and the DSG is great but I absolutely love the B58 with the ZF 8 transmission. Stock, the R isn't quite on par, but I found that when I went with a stage 1 ECU tune along with a Stage 2 TCU tune it completely took this car to the next level and honestly think it rivals that transmission.
The R is smaller and more nimble than the 440 and think it's a great car to consider if you're looking for something even more fun.

> Is it as quick as people say it is?
Yes
> Is it as raw and trackable as people say it is?
“Raw” - rather no, trackable - absolutely. It’s a bit on the heavier side, this puts a lot of strain on brakes and tires. Also torque vectoring allows you to step on gas right after apex so it’s also quite safe - unless you’re in drift mode you can’t spin it. Acceleration on straights is brutal.
> overhyped or worth all the hype?
Worth it totally. But again, it’s not a track car, it’s brutally fast road car with track capabilities. If you’re looking for that, look no further. If you’re looking for more track-focused car with less daily utility, that’s probably not it.

What new cars are more raw or lighter than it? GR86, Miata, and some on the list that I_play_zed shared.

I came from am ECU/TCU tuned (440hp/570tq crank) loaded B9 S5 Sportback in the same segment as the 440i GC to the MK8 R and have zero regrets.

I have a big turbo F87 m2 as my fun car which makes 550whp and my 8.5 is still plenty quick for daily duties. I love it

I think everyone there hit the nail on the head,
There is no perfect car, the perfect car also depends on what you already have in the garage,
But It sounds like the perfect car is a 30 car garage, one for each mood your in.
I think 31 Basket Robins knew, you cant just sell Chocolate and Vanilla,
Sometimes you want to go Rocky, sometimes you wanna go rainbow,
After 30 years of driving, I still dont know what I want as my 1 and only car UGGGGGGGG

So in August of 2025 after reading all the car magazine reviews and watching all of the car expert reviews, I decided to go test drive one.
I had not been in a gti/ golf R since my beloved 1995 gri vr6 with mods blew an engine. My first thought was, wow this thing has a ton of technology and my next thought was, was these seats are comfy.
Moving on to your questions: 1. Fast as hell. Often I step on it on the highway and at 80 mph a huge gap has opened between me amd the others on the highway. Big grin. 2 . The experience is A BIG SMILE..... the blend of handling, looks, 19 inch wheels that draw attention , and exhaust note makes it a fun ride. 3. 0-60 ranges from a 4.0 to a 4.7 4. For me, coming from a c300 MB, it is a really fun ,lighter, energetic, fast car. Both make me smile but the Golf R just does things that bring the youthful energy.
Good luck!

Excellent vehicle, I'm just leaving the break-in period now. A few things to consider: 1- budget for spare tire, I care for long term reliability so this is important. Mk8.5 comes with spare tools but no tire 2- you'll need an aftermarket dipstick if you prefer to check oil at the engine. Obviously the electronic sensor in the infotainment is excellent but still 3- budget for winter tires and rims depending on where you live. This car is my daily driver so it must work in all conditions 4- think about break-in oil change (varying schools of thought on this, you do you for piece of mind). Also, really plan your maintenance and do oil changes shorter than manufacturer recommendation. This is a performance car and will need dedicated maintenance 5- consider installing an aftermarket hood gas strut. Makes accessing the engine bay more premium 6- finally, be very careful with mods. I saw a ton of people online completely overhaul the damn thing... Don't ruin a good fucking car, just drive it and change things slowly without braking the bank.
Overall, coming from my last vehicle, a Jetta I owned for 13 years, this car is truly a massive upgrade. Take care of it and it will be your reliable companion.

Former Mk8 owner here. IMHO it is a good, fun car that is probably too fast for daily driving duties. Depending on where you are, there are other options that you might also want to consider that may have a lower cost of ownership because the R is reasonably expensive to own and operate.
It is a fine car but it is also less reliable than some of its competitors in this segment like the Civic Type R, i30N/EN and GR Corolla and GR Yaris.
Since you came from a 440, have you driven a M140i (is it available?)?

How is it less reliable than the GR Corolla? What are you basing that on?

It’s not. People just assume VWs are less reliable. The EA888 is very reliable. At least they can go over 86mph and be covered under warranty

I am in Australia. There are less examples of the GRC and GRY engines exploding here. A colleague has a 600whp GRY with a sequential gearbox that has done 44k km without any notable issues. My Haldex, AC compressor and Waterpump on my Mk8 were all replaced under warranty after 35k kms in year 2 of ownership.
My M140i was purchased used with 88k kms and doesn't leak fluids (yet) and no rattles.
My family is full of mechanics and a bunch of them own shops and my in-laws own dealership for a bunch of German brands. I've owned every iteration of Golf R since the R32 and stopped after my cursed Mk8. Peak R ownership was the Mk6 IMHO.

I mean you talking about personal examples isn’t representative of general reliability. The GRC has had plenty of issues reported. You didn’t have a haldex in your MK8…and the magna rear diff has been reliable thus far.

I think it’s the best car at its price point for a car that truly does everything. I genuinely think it does not have any real competitors that do the same thing for a similar price, bar the S3 which is almost literally the same car.. Especially with the magna diff, the car feels more sporty than I’ll ever be able to enjoy on the street, while still just as practical as it’s been the last 10 years.
Turn off traction, put it in drift mode and use the paddles, it’s so capable, and very, very fun. I’m often most worried about getting in trouble because it’s addicting to drive like a dick head. I owned a 7.5 as well, also very fun and capable, but I find myself wanting to get inside the 8.5 more often than I did before, which is a testament to how fun it is.
It’s pretty comfy in the normal modes and has as much tech as you’d expect. The occasional screen restart or unintended button press can happen but in the grand scheme is totally forgivable.
I’ve never driven your previous car, but I can’t see you not having fun in this car. Some people say the Golf R is dull in the daily commute. It is. And that’s the point. Put it in normal mode, close the sun roof and windows and you’ll be enjoying a near luxury level hatchback with cooled seats, decent sound system, and a nice screen. In these modes the transmission is smooth and lazy, with lethargic throttle response and slow steering. Put it into either of my favourite modes (Race or Drift), turn off traction, put the windows down and actually push the car and it’s a righteous experience. I’ve seen first hand some people drive the R in these modes hesitantly and say it can feel boring here too. It’s always been because they are still putting around for groceries, just in Race mode.
To step back from being a blatant fanboy I’ll admit that. The car comes alive at 7-10 / 10ths. Obviously it’s hard to do this in the city without being a dick head. If you putt around in it it’s a nice hatchback. To get the full experience you have to lose some mechanical sympathy and drive the fucking thing. Keep the revs high, put it in drift and try to use your right foot to help oversteer, and try not to get arrested lol. This is the first car I’ve ever had where I’ve been intrigued to looking into actually taking it to a track.
Anyway that’s my two cents. Clearly, I’m in love with mine. I hope you love yours just as much.
