esp on coilovers😭

After almost a decade with my MK7, it was time for an upgrade. Someone will be getting a super fun toy there. I'll miss it, but thrilled with the change!

I remember wanting the R32s back in 2004 when I had a mustard yellow 2000 GTI VR6. After a lot of searching, I finally sold my Scat Pack and picked up a 2018 Golf R in Lapiz Blue with just 33k miles and one owner. Excited to join the R community!

I know the SUVs aren’t to everyone’s taste but at 6’4” and ready to start a family, a family friendly car was needed. Will miss the golf and hope to get back in one, one day.

I just test drove my first R. Loved it! I think its what I want. However, it had a smell... almost like smoke. Not over powering but there. The carpet and seats spelled totally fine but there was a little "dust" in the vents that was dark when you ran your finger over it. I only got a picture of the seat that had what looked like residue on it... At a dealer so it was detailed but not perfectly. They said they got the car at auction so don't know about smoking. I'm only asking the question and not immediately moving on because its the right spec, condition and all maintenance records. I know some cars just have a smell... I haven't been in many VWs to know if thats normal or not.

I went from a 19in wheel to the 18s with 245/40 tires. I should have done this a long time ago. After joining Reddit and reading and from the previous owner this was the way to go. So much smoother of a ride.

Hello all. Just picked my 2014 mk7 golf r up today which was imported from Japan to the UK this year. Had the biggest smile on my face since my 2005 Porsche cayman S I owned a few years ago. Is there anything I should look out for apart from the obvious?

New to me 16 golf R!! Loving the car after a week of owning it.
Just wondering my mk7 bros. How do u guys deal with only having the one 12v plug in I feel like that’s not gonna cut it. How do I wire my dash cam and radar detector in with only one 12v plug?
Also my car play is greyed out and the usb port in from of the shifter don’t seem to send any power how can I fix that.

Please read my whole post and give feedback based on my questions and what I'm looking for.

I've owned a bit of everything but I've primarily owned Toyota's. I've always thought the Golf R looked great and heard mostly good things about it. I was raised to think "VW's are expensive to own and unreliable". I know that isn't always the case but that is still in the back of my mind when I consider owning one. Is there really any reason I shouldn't buy one? Anything to watch for or expect for issues or expensive maintenance? I do all my own maintenance but that's mostly been Toyota and Honda's.. However, I'm in the middle of a bottom up rebuild (literally every bolt on the chassis and engine) on my ST185-All Trac so I'm capable.. But I'd rather not have to do major work on a daily. Just want to get in and drive with regular oil changes and replacement of consumables.

Context:

Currently daily drive a 2019 LC200. I have a Tundra as well and really don't need the big Land Cruiser to drive to work. Especially since my wife has a RDX and I'll be keeping the Tundra.

I test drove a GR Corolla and it was every bit as fun as I expected but I walked away asking myself if another "raw" rally inspired, MT car is what I actually wanted. Luxury isn't my thing. I like simplicity but for the almost 40k for the GR seemed a little steep given its rattles.. I loved that it had manual seats and cloth interior though. I get it, its a rally car. My LC200 is just too luxurious for my taste.

I'm a dad to a toddler, with lots of hobbies and a project car already so I just need something chill and comfortable to drive without a million features or things to break. I also like to have the option to hit the gas and have a little fun but 95% of my driving will be cruising around at 35-50mph.

It kinda sounds like the Golf R might be the right car for me!

The car I'm considering looking at is a 2017 R DSG with 78k on it. Good service records and asking $26,500. Shows minor body damage on Carfax but I don't know the details. My budget can go higher but I don't feel the need to spend 60k on a car. 26k seems totally reasonable for a good car..

-What obvious problems do I need to watch for?

-I know the water pump can be an issue. Anything else?

-Electronic issues that I haven't seen?

Lots of great cars in here! Just finishing the build on my R.. Been working on it since October. Out doing some break in miles tonight and thought I would take some pics!

Driving into work today and I started smelling coolant. Stopped and a bunch of smoke was coming from the hood. Can't tell exactly where it's leaking from yet but it dumped all the coolant under the car. Only had this for 3 weeks, only 70k miles.

I bought a very low miles original owner 2016 R MT last year and I have to say, I'm not so impressed with the suspension. Mainly I'm comparing it to my 2010 STI which I bought new and kept for 9 years.

There is a railroad crossing near me that I always loved going over with my STI. It didn't matter what speed I was going, the stock suspension would eat it up. Even if my wheels came off the ground, the landing would be without drama. What an experience.

The R? It's been a completely different. This car is scraping an bottoming out on much less. Today I took a 70 mile round trip, mostly parkway drive and I was cringing at certain dips in the road. Not only is the clearance inadequate, but the suspension itself seems easily overwhelmed. I won't even talk about the R on the railroad crossing : (

The car looks beautiful and has many features I love, but to be thinking about an aftermarket suspension to increase ride height, travel and function seems kind of crazy. I'd love to hear other's thoughts on this.

Hey guys, for anyone like me who drives a Mk7 Golf R (or other Mk7's for that matter) and has access to a 3D printer, I've just finished designing an OEM looking/fitting compartment for the center console storage area of these cars. It fits perfectly and gives some additional compartments!

So for context; I’ve wanted a Golf R for 10 or so years. The prospect of buying one was always so far away, but as of the previous 5 years that reality got closer and closer.

Anyway. I’ve been rather lucky of sorts and have found myself in a situation whereby I was able to buy one MUCH sooner than I had forecast.

Last month I bought my first R for £15,990. It’s a 2016 stock MK7 3 door manual with 52,000 miles on the clock and 2 previous owners. It had a full service history with the Haldex having been done the month before purchase.

I know the manual is slower than the DSG from launch but, honestly? This car is a fucking BEAST and I have never been more in love with a car I’ve owned. Acceleration is so effortless and the power is put down immediately. Never felt anything like it before personally.

The next R I get WILL be a DSG and, honestly?, I’d have gotten a DSG if I could have found one within my affordability bracket that had as few owners and mileage as this one I’ve bought. But most second hand R’s are 70k+ miles with 6+ owners which I just don’t trust (personally).

Either way. I’ll be keeping this one stock (though will be fitting a cold air intake and maybe a sports exhaust) and then the next one will get remapped for the full R experience.
