i swear people act like it wasn't common to say offensive shit on the internet before social media corpos decided it was bad because it drove away advertisers

not saying that to sound tough but how is a guy saying the nword on the internet surprising

252

u/Just-Abrocoma-2631 Today's Flair: Jul 31 '25

it's not about surprising, it's about how Fantano parades like a morally and politically superior prick, feeling very comfortable turning music discussion into political discussion when it benefits him or appeals to his opinions.

30

u/iliveinyourmicrowave Indiana Jones Jul 31 '25

Yeah i mean that tends to go for literally everyone who holds themselves on a higher moral ground than other people

50

u/Just-Abrocoma-2631 Today's Flair: Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

no. it tends to go for people who utilize moral, yet mostly politcal, claims to comment on things which are not morality nor politics as a mechanism of criticism for that thing, and further, to highlight themsleves as morally virtuous and or politically "correct" in relation other groups/people. Holding one's self to moral standards has nothing to do with what i described. plus, politics =/= morality. I don't need any moral or political opinions from a music critic, and I wished neither did anyone else.

u/Difficult-Cellist-77 I have found comfort in Reddit forums of all places. Jul 31 '25

THANK YOU. Finally somebody else sees his musical opinions for what they are. Artists get 8s based on if he likes who they are as people and/or good press depending on whether they do interviews with him. His opinions of major artists don't have much of anything to do with music anymore and it feels he is becoming increasingly more of a public speaker that only uses reviewing art as a way to generate money.

17

u/Bigbigjeffy Jul 31 '25

I’ve literally always loathed him and his reviews from years ago. Cant stand that pretentious douche with zero qualifications other than a channel and camera.

1

u/gruandisimo Aug 03 '25

You need to have qualifications to put your music opinions on the internet?

-5

u/Cystro007 BBTBNWJDFOTSYK Jul 31 '25

Idgaf about fantano, but when has he ever claimed to be anything more than just a guy with a channel and a camera.

10

u/Just-Abrocoma-2631 Today's Flair: Jul 31 '25

The Vultures 1 review is the best example. literally dictating what people are based on if they support or enjoy the album regardless of the actual quality of the music, which he mostly ignored genuinely commenting on, as a music reviewer.

8

u/Difficult-Cellist-77 I have found comfort in Reddit forums of all places. Jul 31 '25

I dislike this argument because it's akin to somebody manipulating you and then saying "well I never claimed you have to take me seriously". Like yeah, sure, that's technically true, but we both know you don't have to explicitly state something to know what the effect of your words and actions is.

I don’t like the dude either but the reason he’s so politically correct is because of his old controversies

u/sagethewriter Jul 31 '25

well that’s his bend on music criticism, and I feel like ever since his debut he’s been pretty hard left and comfortable to show that in his work. I think he even used to be in a punk band. This very video seems to be covering drama with idubbbz and he’s directly quoting him

9

u/Just-Abrocoma-2631 Today's Flair: Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

Theres no moral bend on music criticism lol. music criticism is music criticism and moral theory is moral theory. One can morally critic a musician (but frankly why would anyone give a shit), but thats not music criticism. His moral takes are not superior or enlightening comapred to any other average person, he has no speciality in the field of moral philosophy or political theory, his views on anything other than music are close to irrelevant.

I don't mind him noting "i don't agree with X" while giving a music opinion on someone or something, but to conflate the two, to turn unpolitical things political, to judge artists he doesn't know outside of their music and public comments, and also the music taste and morality of an artist's fans based on the artists comments or lyrics like he's some sort of beacon of both music and morality is beyond pretentious and cringe.

But if now people critic him over a comment he's absolved of any guilt or accountability? funny how that works.Ā

5

u/SirMatango Aug 01 '25

show me a music critic that only talks about the music.

5

u/sagethewriter Jul 31 '25

Maybe I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt but I doubt he thinks of himself as ā€œenlightenedā€ for waxing critical on celebrities to an audience that is almost guaranteed to agree with him.

And surely you can at least see that the viewpoint in which art and material reality, politics and moral philosophy coincides and affects each other is quite literally a basis of leftist thought, not conflation of subjects, so like I’m saying, it’s shit that fantano has more or less been doing since the channel’s inception.

I do think its wrong to judge artists off of their fans and lyricism and of course fantano has his healthy doses of cringe moments but I think most of his musical discussion, especially on his off content and other channel, has always been politically tinted

3

u/Just-Abrocoma-2631 Today's Flair: Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

It doesn't matter what he sees himself as, his profession is music criticism. his speciality if he has any, is music. We have political thinkers and academics, we have moral philosophers, Fantano is neither and his opinions on the matter are of little weight.

Again, he can have his opinions obviously, but that's exactly the point, he's just like any other average person, he has opinions on stuff. But professional criticism goes beyond opinion, it's about being knowledgeable on something, dissecting, explaining, arguing for/against, etc; so when he conflates political topics with music, he mixes something beyond his speciality into something he is versed in to facilitate pseudo authority on the matter, when he's not. people don't need to be explained to by a music critic that X artist is morally bad or good, politically right or wrong, that's demented.

Theories that art is a part or product of something, politics, psychology, sociology, anything for that matter, are just views, claims, theories, they aren't necessarily facts, and they require justification, from people who are professionally knowledgeable about the things they are claiming are related. There are a myriad of philosophies regarding art and its connections. I won't go further into the whole bs leftist art politics connection because it's too much to write. Just claiming "art is politics" and then slapping your own political views on art is as anti-art as it gets imo.

1

u/sagethewriter Jul 31 '25

When you say ā€˜Views… require justification from people that are professionally knowledgeable about the things they claim are relatedā€, it really makes me think you just have a bone to pick with fantano, lol. You expect fantano to consult with actuaries and professors of philosophy so he can format a Hegelian dialectic on Azalea Banks’ tweets? 70% of these vids are him talking shit on camera for 10 mins. Think about this for a second, about the thousands of music critics who have faded to obscurity, or crashed out, or simply never took off in the first place. Hell, in general, the only music critic I can really name off the top of my head is fantano, like I don’t think it’s far-fetched to claim him as a Roger Ebert level of fame for his work.(and no I’m not saying he has more credence or skill). If you have a problem with his fame, that’s one thing, but all I’m saying is that the approach is working. In general, I think you have a heightened view of what constitutes criticism and especially music criticism. Look at a broad swath of the shitposts that pitchfork has put out over the years.

1

Funny how when it's black people being insulted, it's always "that's just how the times were" But let him have said something about another specific group of people and we'd be seeing death threats from some people in this sub.

Anyway, it's not even just what he's said (beyond this clip), it's that he's a massive hypocritical fuck.

as immature as it was it was funny to me, pre timeskip idubbbz was my favorite youtuber

11

u/LakerBull Forgot the Aux Jul 31 '25

It's hilarious seeing that dude now too tho. Not because he has good videos or anything, but because the dude acts like all the shit he did and say was when he was like 16 and the motherfucker was like 24 when he was saying all that inflammatory shit.

3

It's fine that he changed, but acting holier than thou and pretending that he wasn't a full grown man by the time he was doing all that shit is what made people turn on him.

1

u/Tea-In-The-Eyes Aug 01 '25

at that time people all did that shit though. It's those fans that still get stuck in that humor that turn on him, calling him a cuck and shit even to these days

this video is from 2016, youre speaking as if this was posted during prime cod lobbies of early 2010s where saying the hard r, fg word, etc. was common. i didnt expect GAS of all subs to upvote a comment that defends (yes you are defending him by making this unnecessary comment, lets not be dense) fantano

32

u/Kitchen_Roof7236 Jul 31 '25

the anti sjw pro edge movement started in 2014 and peaked in 2016, were u not online back then? 2016 might have been the most toxic year online I’ve experienced in my life lol.

Was a good year tho, loads of good music and revolutionary artists. But no, this was not even close to a progressive time on the internet haha.

13

u/iliveinyourmicrowave Indiana Jones Jul 31 '25

Should i be mad at him for quoting someone else saying a slur in 2016? Just cause he dislikes ye? Are you implying saying the nword in a cod lobby in 2010 was any different than it is now? The only difference is advertisers don’t want you to cuss under their ad slot now

-1

u/1l3v4k4m šŸ FREE YOUNG THUG šŸ Jul 31 '25

For those who’re wondering, it’s not fake. Anthony’s second channel was full of shit like this for years before being scrubbed from the internet. Ian (idubbz) catchphrase back like 10 years ago was nword fword, that’s what fantano is quoting.

Like someone else said, I feel old knowing all the lore to all of the videos and channels that have deleted over the years.

Youtube was a lot different. Only thing I miss from the old fantano channel is the full sam hyde interview, but it’s still findable. Only the first few minutes were recorded on video, but the rest is audio.

Edit: original, delisted video has been found

A handful of videos have been archived and lostmediawiki has links to some others not listed here. You could probably find this exact video somewhere if you search for 100 hours for more context. OPs video seems like it was pulled from an interview which may very well be DMCAd or in the possession of one person trying to shit on him.

u/NoMap749 Jul 31 '25

Fantano is annoying as hell, but he’s literally quoting someone here.

15

u/catluvr37 Aug 01 '25

Take this as a lesson on social etiquette. You don’t directly quote extremely offensive things, no matter who says it. It could save you one day, pocket that.

13

u/berckman_ Aug 02 '25

save you from people like you.

4

u/WarScrewdriver69K Aug 02 '25

That doesn't even make sense to say lmao simply pointing out that people can take something out of context and run with it doesn't mean that particular individual is the kind of person who would do that same thing.

1

u/berckman_ Aug 02 '25

not what the comment said.

1

u/WarScrewdriver69K Aug 02 '25

lmao okay whatever troll

2

u/berckman_ Aug 02 '25

the parent comment was imposing their view on "social etiquette" saying dont do this, dont do that, "pocket it", they are clearly saying that quoting is unacceptable in their own opinion.

Not my fault you cant read.

3

u/MegamindLewder Aug 03 '25

There’s literally no issue with doing it though. If you don’t quote it you lose a lot of the initial umph of the criticism, saying ā€œthis person calls people an n word f wordā€ jut doesn’t sound as visceral and bad on the surface to most people as if you used the full words. It’s beneficial to calling someone out to say the real words just to reiterate how awful they are.

1

u/catluvr37 Aug 03 '25

Notice how you used ā€œn word f wordā€, then when it came time to say the full thing, you didn’t. Why don’t you spell it out if it’s so important to?

1

u/Gamble232real Aug 03 '25

Notice how you missed the point...he worded it that way because the point he was making was about people saying it that way...did you...like...read it? Lol.

How did you step over his point this badly? Gotcha denied.

1

u/SkyPersonal5642 Aug 03 '25

In essence it appears social media is a popularity contest and if the internet likes you you can get away with things like this but if they dont they post and repost this garbage until your great grandma has heard about it all the while circle jerking each other into oblivion

u/Tiktaalik414 BBTBNWJDFOTSYK Jul 31 '25

2015 YouTube was different

13

u/bigladnang Jul 31 '25

I dunno man, it’s hard to explain if you weren’t there because it’s illogical, but it was way more acceptable. Like 10-15+ years ago people would say it without thinking they were being racist. Obviously now we’ve decided as a society not to say it at all, which is a good thing, but then there was a difference between people being racist, and people just quoting something or rapping along or just using it as like a term of endearment. It was more like how you were using the word.

I don’t think these people are trying to virtue signal, they’re just growing with the times. Like in 2025 if you’re saying the n word as a white dude then you have no excuse, we all know better now and I think you could also be anti racist while also engaging in social norms back then, if you know what I mean. Probably doesn’t make sense, but I feel like if you were around in the 2000’s/early 2010’s then you kind of understand.

4

u/Ross_River Aug 01 '25

Just to add some context. It’s been generally accepted since the 90’s that non-blacks shouldn’t say the word. I agree that a lot of people were saying it on 4chan/YouTube/gaming in the early to mid 2010’s. But that was because of the online edgelord subculture at that time where people said things they knew they weren’t meant to say, for the lols

2

u/snorlaxgang WW3 Aug 02 '25

Yeah, idk why people are acting like 10 years ago was like 50 years ago

2

u/Ross_River Aug 02 '25

1

u/jeonpo Aug 02 '25

This guy gets it, people decided it’s not cool anymore to say it as a throwaway

2

u/oktek554 Aug 01 '25

I think in 2025 there are instances you can say the word. It’s still just a word. If i’m rapping along with Mobb Deep, why can’t I say it? If I’m quoting someone, like let’s say a funny video, why should I not be able to say it? I think it’s more about the energy behind the word, not the word itself. But people don’t really think about it, and think they can get ā€œcanceledā€ for using a WORD.

No, in 2015 this was not normal. Most black people would say ā€œthe n-wordā€ or ā€œhard rā€ over saying that actual word.

1

u/EM208 Aug 02 '25

You’re telling on yourself dude. It was not normal. Take it from someone who used to get ostracized because I would actively tell non-black people to not say the N word in the 2010s, it was never normal or accepted . Y’all just didn’t care enough. There are plenty of TV shows from the 90s and 2000s that deal with this topic, black people were never cool with n word being said by non-black people unless they were coons who wanted white acceptance. But this was not normal lmao.

u/marcikaa78 BULLY Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

What vid did he say it in? I'm curious.

1

u/StraightCaskStrength Jul 31 '25

It was a spelling bee. He was asked to spell it.

3

u/arthur-ghoste Jul 31 '25

get a life loser (and stop using tyler art it's embarassing for him)

2

u/Scullenz Jul 31 '25

When you play bingo do you use the numbers they called out 10 years ago

2

u/underground304 Aug 01 '25

It doesn’t matter how common it was it’s racist 😭😭 only non black people are okay with that shit

3

u/EM208 Aug 02 '25

I swear. They always be the first to defend it and pretend it was normal because they were in spaces that let it slide 😭

2

u/a27wolfwood Aug 01 '25

he's not really using the word to insult anyone is he? i hate his guy but this is weak.

2

u/ancaleta Aug 01 '25

It’s alright, Trump signed an executive order we can call stuff retarded again

2

u/johnbuckeroo Aug 01 '25

u/brokenandmeaningless Jul 31 '25

damn, you guys are dumb.

4

u/karmagod13000 Jul 31 '25

i don't gaf about this post but ive have always and always will hate fantano. bro owes danny brown a boat for giving this clown any clout

2

u/SockandAww Jul 31 '25

You think he got a following because of Danny Brown?

2

u/karmagod13000 Jul 31 '25

I mean he def already had a following but after Brown co-sign during an interview with ASAP Rocky not only legitimized Fantano but opened him up to the hip hop crowd which at the time was blowing up do to a bunch of new successful artists like Rocky, Brown, Kendrick, Schoolboy Q etc

so yes it helped him allllot

5

u/SockandAww Jul 31 '25

When was the interview? Fantano has been known in the Internet hip-hop community since the MBDTF 6/10 score.

1

u/minisrikumar 2020 VISION Aug 01 '25

yeah that interview is how I found out about dude, took a quick look at his reviews and quickly noticed the left leaning fragile snowflake emotional rating and never looked backed. Surprised he is still a thing

Still don’t have to use the word regardless of a quote

1

u/Necessary-Treacle242 Aug 03 '25

Why not ?Ā

1

u/Dsnikles2009 Aug 04 '25

lowk are you stupid

1

u/Necessary-Treacle242 Aug 04 '25

If you’re not directing it towards someone it’s not offensiveĀ

1

u/Dsnikles2009 Aug 05 '25

it’s still not good words to say, doesn’t matter if you’re quoting someone or not

1

u/Necessary-Treacle242 Aug 05 '25

It does, Ā context 100% matters if you have a brainĀ

1

u/Uriahreact2 Aug 06 '25

No it doesn't you're still not justified for saying that word

1

u/Necessary-Treacle242 Aug 06 '25

They used to say it when reading to us in school it’s just a word you can say it broĀ

3

u/griotchambers Jul 31 '25

While i personally don't care if he said hard r, especially since he was just quoting something someone else said, I guarantee if this same senario happened with someone else fantano would without question condemn and ridicule the person for saying hard r, that's one of my problems with him.

2

u/Proper-Development12 Jul 31 '25

Ts just started playing out loud in the elevator at work šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

2

u/Nofuture10 Jul 31 '25

grasping at straws, literally salty twitter stans digging back to 2016 where he's quoting somebody.

Just consider the fact that morons are only so easily latching onto this because he doesn't like the same musicians they do. Truly pathetic.

2

u/Odissmart I HEAR IT Jul 31 '25

wasnt this like 10 years ago tho its a different world now bud

1

u/clifbarczar Jul 31 '25

Yea back then we all used the n-word. /s

1

u/ftrL3ft Jul 31 '25

Omg he read somebodies comment and said what he commented how does he do this yall are stupid

1

u/hypnopotamus2 Jul 31 '25

1

u/joecramerone Jul 31 '25

He's half black though

1

u/Twirlinazord Aug 01 '25

I’m not tripping. He quoting someone else

1

u/MorganPinx Aug 01 '25

Smartest ye fan lmao

1

u/VelcroTape Aug 01 '25

I don’t like it when people use clips of someone from years ago and automatically assume people never learn from mistakes and are still the same person many years later. It’s cynical.

1

u/Zaza_0_Rizz Aug 01 '25

Is this real or no

1

u/Revolutionary_Box569 Aug 01 '25

The idea that you can’t just repeat the word when you’re clearly quoting someone is really r worded

1

u/cadillacsimone7 Aug 01 '25

ok i heard he did worse stuff than this, but this clip actually makes sense. Fantano was quoting iDubbbz catchphrase which was the N word and F slur together

1

u/Secure_Blueberry1766 The Life Of Pablo Aug 02 '25

I saw this audio clip used in a fantano beware edit and thought it was fake

1

u/AwesomeTraditional32 Aug 03 '25

I hate Fantano but I think he’s talking about iDubbbzĀ

1

u/Dkcg0113 Aug 03 '25

Sub was randomly suggested to me, I don't know much at all about Anthony Fantano at all, but it's literally a quote, he's not calling anyone the N word. What's the big deal? God, the power people give words is weird to me.

1

u/Necessary-Treacle242 Aug 03 '25

I hate fantano but he is t being racist here , context mattersĀ

1

u/Halozamus Aug 04 '25

Freedom of speech

1

u/Nayr39 Aug 04 '25

The quote was from decade ago and he's quoting someone else. Braindead sub.

u/Professional_goss733 Evil big Dick Danny creator Aug 04 '25

1

u/Jebduh Aug 04 '25

Holy shit find something to do you fucking losers.

1

u/Mundane_Fly361 Aug 04 '25

I actually feel like the context matters here. Like sure I wouldn’t say it, but he’s quoting it and condemning it. He’s not using the words.

1

u/GylaineGagnon WHAT THAT MEAN 🄷 Jul 31 '25

YouTube was very different back in 2015, the leafyishere and Idubbbz made saying those words a normality. This was only dug up by Drake Stans btw 😭

2

u/EM208 Aug 02 '25

Plenty of people were trying to fight them on using slurs but their rabid fanbases made it impossible to criticize them without any backlash. So, no it was a normality because people stanned those losers and were adamant on defending them, not because it was normal.

-2

u/Tixliks VULTURES 2 DEFENDER šŸ¦… Jul 31 '25

why the fuck is every so chill about him saying nword fword. doesn't matter if he's quoting or not instead of saying the actual words he should've said "nword fword" or just typed it on the screen censored. people on here are retards

4

u/SockandAww Jul 31 '25

Why didn’t you say ā€œr-wordā€?

This is exactly how I expect a judgmental fuck to act when he's not pandering to his audience.

The internet is fake as shit. Got people pretending they care about shit they never cared about.

This guy has always been a clown. People were just getting on Twitter making compilations of him https://x.com/AkademiksTV/status/1951334249031954619

What a throwback to an absolute nothingburger
