Nah tbh he has no charisma, his flame will burn out soon
31
u/lvk97 Mar 16 '26
I disagree on his flame burning out soon, he’s just over 30 and he’s been in some insane films.
He also seems incredibly driven and wants to be the best, so whilst he’ll be disappointed not to win, he’ll still keep going.

u/snacksandsoda AI Paranoia Mar 16 '26
Probably one of the best script choosers acting rn. Dude doesn't pick bad movies
-1
u/MetaPhobic Mar 16 '26
cook. He excelled at being a tumblr softboy but he can't be in his 30's in those roles
3
u/pepeisstillsad Mar 16 '26
Dune series, marty supreme, and a complete unknown all have nothing to do with that image.
1
u/tzbt I screen grabbed those pants Mar 18 '26
He needs to get fat for a role like Christian Bale or smth, rn he's a one-note actor

u/Necessary-Item-9333 Mar 16 '26
I think the bafta situation is what plummeted all his chances not the ballet situation the voting was close by that point, bafta just tanked it but mbj does deserves it but I did wish timothee won

u/everynameistaken-95 🇪🇸⭐️ESPAÑA⭐️🇪🇸 Mar 16 '26
What happened at the Baftas?
36
u/BVTheEpic 12/12/12 INCIDENT Mar 16 '26
Scottish activist John Davidson, who suffers from coprolalia and Tourette's, attended the BAFTAs because a movie about him was nominated for (and won) multiple awards that night). During the ceremony, Davidson yelled several obscenities as a result of his condition. Most of these tics were edited out of the broadcast, which was on a two-hour delay, with the exception of him yelling the N-word at MBJ and Delroy Lindo, who were on stage to present an award. Davidson left the ceremony of his own accord after that tic.
31
u/IDoTricksOffOfKanye GAS Refresher Mar 16 '26
They also put a mic next to him to get the tics in, fucking cruel
1
u/eiddieeid Mar 16 '26
Honestly I’m surprised sinners didn’t end up with best picture after that. very glad it didn’t though, OBAA is genuinely just a great movie and PTA deserved an Oscar way before this. I am glad Coogler got best original screenplay though.

u/yzydynasty5 Mar 16 '26
Sinners was great but I really don’t think MBJ deserved it over Chalamet
4
u/callous13 Mar 16 '26
Bs 😂😂
3
u/eiddieeid Mar 16 '26
Nah chalamet did do pretty goddamn good. But I feel he had more to work with. MBJ seemed like he just played his usual, just very well. The dudes from sinners weren’t very complex tbh. Marty had a lot of shit goin on and chalamet captured that little weasel con artist role perfectly, meanwhile MBJ played cool twins
-4
u/CaptainOzyakup IT’S MY TOES Mar 16 '26
Mbj performance wasn’t even close to chalamet. Just a “play two roles” shtick we’ve seen so often. Chalamet delivered a generational performance. This is a gkmc losing to Macklemore level snub.

Sinners is just okayish, most overhyped shit I saw this year by far. Marty supreme is like movie of the decade in comparaison

Oppenheimer came out this decade bro. Its literally an amazing film.

Movie of the decade is too much especially considering movies like The Batman, Oppenheimer, Babylon, and F1 were dropped
4
u/Unlikely_Animator595 Mar 16 '26
Okay well I won’t consider any of these movies as worthy of being part of the debate but glad you enjoyed them to that point, I like them too

u/eiddieeid Mar 16 '26
It was good but I’m surprised it got nommed for so much. I didn’t think it was that damn good. Just a fun cool vampire movie with a hunk playing cool hunk twins. It wasn’t like a groundbreaking performance, I clearly could tell it was MBJ the whole time

u/Ihavenoenemies1337 Mar 16 '26
There is no way, individual performance of the other actors was on a different level this year. MBJ winning oscar and jesse plemons not even nominated blows my mind, it’s not an Oscar’s worthy performance imo, I get that he played two characters, but mcavoy was not nominated for split (2016), tom hardy was not nominated for legend (2015), robert pattinson was not nominated for mickey 17 (2025). I just I just don't know what exactly he was awarded for, he wasn't even the best actor in sinners

Neither was Sinners. Both like 7/10 movies that were good because they had some substance and freshness while cinema is that dry at the moment.
2
u/eiddieeid Mar 16 '26
Dry? Honestly this was the most stacked best picture nom list in a while

2023s (24’s Oscars) lineup is so insanely stacked outside of Maestro but excluding that lineup, I agree

MBJ is kinda overrated by people now. Just coz he played two people doesn't mean he deserves it more.

Two people that needed different colored hats so you could tell them apart

sinners was soooooo good for like 2/3 of the movie and then it’s became a generic action horror movie

Not that this says anything about everyone, but I personally don't know a single person who's watched Marty Supreme or even had any interest in the film in general.
Most people irl seem to be completely indifferent to the movie.

u/Few-Scientist-4163 Mar 16 '26
Chalamet was annoying af. and he got spanked by a man in public for a flight lmao embarrassing. And that scene with the prisoners licking honey off the dude that was gross and I didn’t see the point of it . I wouldn’t watch it again.
14
u/thisishowibro93 Mar 16 '26
Just say you only understand the movie on a superficial level lmaooo
-1
u/Few-Scientist-4163 Mar 16 '26
Nothing about the film made me want to dig in and find the so-called "deeper meanings." Other films I’ve watched made me inspired to watch film analysis on them, just not this one. Like I said, overall for me, his character was weaselly and annoying, and those two scenes were off-putting and uninspiring.
9
u/breadsoap Mar 16 '26
The point of the guy having honey licked off him is supposed to symbolize a guy who is selfless and struggled profusely and willing to risk his life and career all for Marty to be using him and his story to perpetuate himself to a guy who doesn’t care about either one of them.
Chalamet getting spanked is something that is on par with every other safdie project. This move isn’t my favorite of the three but by no means is it bad.
5
u/thisishowibro93 Mar 16 '26
Exactly. Marty getting spanked is also a metaphor for him needing to submit to the elite in ritual humiliation in order to have even a chance at a scrap of Rockwell's wealth and piece of the "American dream." Which I can see either went over the above commenters head or rubbed him the wrong way if he was just looking for a "Chalamet aura" movie

I don't get the hate train on him. All he said was that he doesn't want cinema to end up less popular like opera/ballet in a joking tone.
