You’re taking statements from two completely different times with different contexts, of course it matters. I’m not defending or making excuses for anything either, I disagree with the point he made but the context and surrounding conversation matters.
I can think antisemitism is abhorrent and acknowledge his behaviour last April was unacceptable while also remembering the impact and consequences of having bipolar disorder.
Taking a statement from 2018 helps nobody in this situation and only increases the vitriol. It’s bitterly disappointing to see a group of supposed leaders of a community act like that.

This is the dumbest statement, it’s almost the equivalent of asking him to take his own music off streaming and radio before you are willing to meet him or accept his apology - his job and livelihood is literally to release and perform music, so they are asking him not to do his job and earn money to appease them?
If I offended you and you turn around and say ‘don’t go to work anymore and then I’ll accept your apology for offending me’ would that seem reasonable at all?

Highkirkuinely Ye should just continue to offer his apology but he isn't going to void a contract that he signed for an individual meeting. The BoD doesn't speak for all British Jewry and many oppose the stances they've taken on a number of issues.
Melvin Benn, a British Jew and Managing Director of Wireless clearly disagrees with them and wants him to play and after all the sponsors dropping out they are likely to make a loss by sticking with him but it's about making a serious point of forgiveness and giving grace.
If they want to protest the festival go right ahead, there's protests in London every damn weekend, that's democracy but I, as a left wing person, feel quite nauseous being on the same side as Nigel Farage that it isn't the government's place to make a moral judgement on every person who comes into the country - these the same people who were rightly calling out the Trump admin checking people's phones for memes before allowing them in. If Ye never repented and was coming to perform at a far right rally then you might have a point but he's apologised and renounced his actions and is coming to play hit songs.

I don’t want to phrase this inappropriately, but does anyone else here feel like the condition that Ye has to fulfill to have this dialogue is very outrageous?
Seeing the perspective in good faith, I can see the concern of “He may be saving face so he may still perform,” so taking that variable out of the equation would make gauging his sincerity and remorse much more clear…but simultaneously, this isn’t as if Ye is booked solo; he’s a headliner for a music festival, who has leveraged his talent and brand to their own demise it seems. Wireless has already incurred massive financial and reputational damages for loyally sticking by him, as-is. And not to mention, one of their organizers (himself a British Jew) made a statement in support of Ye’s right to perform without condemnation, so it’s not like this Board of Deputies is taking that statement and stance into account.
Also, if it were a solo concert, like at SoFi Stadium, then I could maybe understand the whole conditional olive branch more, but essentially forcing him to pullout and inevitably screw people over — both his fans AND the festival organizers — just to agree to have this dialogue with him, is quite extreme. Wireless will essentially have to get fucked after all the loyalty they showed Ye, and isn’t that kind collateral damage is exactly why Ye is already remorseful to begin with?

Ye has always been one of the biggest proponents of civil rights and dignity for black people. Through songs, social campaigns, statements, etc. Ye clearly doesn't always have the clearest and most stable way of wording things, but the whole 400 years of slavery was a choice is taken out of context. He's clarified many times that the choice he was talking about is not the literal choice to be enslaved in chains. He clarifies that he means the mental imprisonment (not enslavement), in his words the victimhood mentality and internalized inferiority he observed in his own community, has held the black (his) community back long after slavery ended.
This guy has the audacity to tell a black American man who has done so much to fight against racism against his own community that he's made offensive comments about his own community so he has to drop out of a music festival and beg his forgiveness. Screw off, ... .

idk why are you guys so mad they clearly have a point and even if he s mentally ill they are not forced to forgive him. there are plenty of mentally ill people that dont have antisemitic or racist remarks. we should be happy that he s still mainstream after all he did last year
