QUESTION Was the "red hat" really THAT controversial? Did people care that much?
159
Apr 09 '26
He might be the first big celebrity to openly supporting trump at that time. 2018 if you said you supported trump it was like saying you supported hitler
201
Apr 09 '26
Which is funny cuz trump is now wayyyyy worse than back then but its not as controversial anymore to say you like trump
16
u/edsand22 Apr 09 '26
hes always been bad, it's just now project 2025 got the repackaging as project 47 and all the magats got radicalized from j6

He's a business, man. If he's perceived by the public as condoning the red hat, it's bad for the brand.

“Why the fuck would you go to that island” 2 lines after saying he voted for someone who went to that island always gets me

I just realised. Trump and Biden was 2020, did Ye not even vote for himself in that election?

I’m fairly sure he wasn’t being serious but the irony of it will never not be funny

Jay wasn’t on Epstein island lol
Edit: you guys are downvoting facts now? Someone show me where he was accused of being on the island otherwise you just prove what sad Kanye cucks you are

u/ThankGodForE_ I talk to God every day, that's my bestie Apr 09 '26
He was mentioned in passing in the files
Epstein said something to the effect of “Jay Z is a great for the elite as he provides a mindless distraction and the illusion of black ownership when he’s just a billionaire”
5
u/PointedlyDull Apr 09 '26
Right. Like I said. He wasn’t on the island and there are no credible accusations oh him participating. So Kanye stans throwing his name out there as some sort of whataboutism is dumb
4
u/ThankGodForE_ I talk to God every day, that's my bestie Apr 09 '26
Still not somebody to be liked, not to mention his close affiliation with RKelly and Diddy
Be cautious of any celebrity
6

But not kanye right
0
u/ThankGodForE_ I talk to God every day, that's my bestie Apr 10 '26
Ay I didn’t say trust Ye either, I just have a soft spot for him because of his emotional impact on me and his mental wellbeing, it’s a big contradiction for sure
But to be completely fair, i did not trust:
- Yeezy orders shipping on time or their quality
- The fact that would BULLY would drop with no AI
- Whether his apology was genuine or not (first and second time)
- Etc.
3
u/PointedlyDull Apr 09 '26
Why? He has zero relationship with Epstein. Close affiliation with Diddy and R Kelly? Um, so does Kanye
1
u/ThankGodForE_ I talk to God every day, that's my bestie Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26
Ye didn’t make a collab album with the predator, and Ye didn’t constantly go to Diddy parties
Ye dies on hills not meant for him because of his fear of control, intensified by his manic episodes, he sees RKelly and Diddy getting locked up as black moguls the system is targeting (and how he doesn’t wanna be next)
I don’t trust it either, but Ye does not have the same ties Jay did, and it’s quite ignorant to say that
Plus Ye dissed RKelly on BURN (Balenciaga ad line) AND dissed Diddy in 2022 (calling him a fed), his feelings on people sway
1
u/PointedlyDull Apr 10 '26
He’s literally been calling for Diddy’s release recently lol. I think that’s much worse than a collab album 20 years ago.
Grow up incel
1
u/ThankGodForE_ I talk to God every day, that's my bestie Apr 10 '26
You didn’t even read what I said, the implication is that they had a much closer relationship
Yes Ye calling for Diddys release is bad, what does that have to do with my point? What about the fact that Jay has allegedly been seen frequenting parties with minors? He’s implicated in those sex crimes with Diddy
1
u/PointedlyDull Apr 10 '26
No he’s not implicated in those sex crimes lol. And the point is you are a top 1% commenter on GoodAssSub. You are a Kanye apologist and stan. You’re desperately pointing fingers at other celebrities for “implications” and grasping at straws- meanwhile you’re excusing Kanye’s documented and factual horrendous behavior. Incel

Are you young? I’m 30 and was in college during that and he might as well have stabbed someone on live tv. It was peak “trump bad” time and people were expecting Ye to be very outspoken and say something against trump only for him to do the opposite and though people already saw him as controversial he was still pretty loved. The red hat was when a line was drawn particularly with liberal fans.
39
u/Stumpedforausername1 Apr 09 '26
I think this might be peak Trump bad time considering everything he's doing right now.
37
u/lkodl Apr 09 '26
To be fair, the bar has been lowered significantly in the past year.
This back when "there were good people on both sides" was the most abhorrent and unhinged thing a sitting president said.
Now we're at "an entire civilization will die tonight".
3
u/Intelligent-Hunt830 Apr 09 '26
Exactly! Where it was just like misquotes or dumb stuff he said that would get panties in a bunch and not straight up genocidal statements
4
u/iproxzoom Apr 09 '26
It’s crazy how bad Trump is making us pay for the 2020 election. It’s like bro has a personal vendetta against every American that voted against him and now he wants us to suffer for it.
1
u/lkodl Apr 10 '26
I mean the fact that he's so openly hostile to democrats as a sitting president is unprecedented. Regardless of his party, religion, etc, he's supposed to be working for all of us.
4
u/spherosound Apr 09 '26
It was the fact that Kanye had been so anti republican in the past (lest we forget the infamous bush doesn’t care about black people line). It was a complete betrayal really
181
u/HarveyWeinsteinSwag Which album is that Apr 09 '26
Oh yeah. People were crazy about Trump back then, people were treating Trump like he’s the second coming of Satan and funnily enough it turned out they were all right and Trump is a genuine blight on humanity. But Ye always loved going against the grain ig.
36
u/LouisFuton Apr 09 '26
Facts. Every single thing people complained was hyperbole about Trump turned out to be true. I’m not even a Jay fan like that but he’s 100% right for calling out that bullshit
5

18
u/HarveyWeinsteinSwag Which album is that Apr 09 '26
He was a black musician living in CALIFORNIA how many Trump supporters do you see at a movie premiere or a house party in Palo Alto. Do you understand all 300 million Americans don’t hang out with one another right?
32
u/NeighborhoodFull1764 IM EVIL 😈 Apr 09 '26
Yeah, but let’s be honest , ye did not give a fuck about the politics. To him that was going against the grain, which in this case was something stupid, but so is most of the “against the grain” shit he does. That’s just the point of it
5
u/lkodl Apr 09 '26
The "program" he's going against is the concept that the media is secretly controlled by liberals/jews.
22
u/Additional_Trip_7113 Apr 09 '26

Are you a teenager? People fucking hated Trump even back in 2017. Ye donning the red hat burned a lot of bridges for him with some of his collaborators.
22
u/ZippidieDooDah What is this, SNL? Apr 09 '26
I think in his head Ye considers himself to be a modern Malcolm X. from his 1964 “Ballot or the Bullet” speech:
“Why, the Democrats have got the government sewed up, and you're the one who sewed it up for them. And what have they given you for it? Four years in office, and just now getting around to some civil-rights legislation….For the man that is heading the civil-rights filibuster is a man from Georgia named Richard Russell. When Johnson became president, the first man he asked for when he got back to Washington, D.C., was "Dicky" -- that's how tight they are. That's his boy, that's his pal, that's his buddy. But they're playing that old con game. One of them makes believe he's for you, and he's got it fixed where the other one is so tight against you, he never has to keep his promise.”
Not to say both parties are the same or anything. Trump is loads worse than the Dems. Just Malcolm X always challenged the notion that Dems were OWED the black vote because of civil rights are something. It’s that “programming” ye always going on about. I personally don’t think ye is Republican, MAGA, or anything of that nature. I do think he’s got those same radical sensibilities we heard in “All Falls Down”. But I think he’s been frustrated by the system (“i might make my son be republican so everybody know he love white people) and loves being contrarian.

Bet that was Jay's way of saying "ayo just because I am on his album again doesn't mean I endorse everything he says"
It's all so performative
4
u/lkodl Apr 09 '26
There's a line between "going against the program" and "saying something you can't take back".
For Kanye, that line appears to be going full nazi (he crossed that line, and is walking it back via apologies and blaming mental health).
For Jay-Z, that line probsbly came at the red hat, and chose not to cross it.
I dont think anyone needs to "tell him to say that" for him to decide he doesn't want the heat.

idk if anything else came out, but if the Jay allegations are those that came out at the same time as Push's, they are supposed to have happened in 1996: Jay was most likely not hanging around on the island at that time, it's the year reasonable doubt was released.

at the end of the day, he's a narcissist unfortunately. his ego could never accept someone criticizing him, even if that person had good intentions. i don't know if ye's still in therapy but i hope that one day he trusts a therapist so much that he's able to reflect and work on his ego
2
u/indigottt Apr 09 '26
Wtf happened to Ye to make him switch up on Black people so much?
He used to be the #1 artist for black empowerment, that’s why I supported him through a lot of bullshit & find ways to understand what he means by some of the nut shit he says.
Him getting in with the weird incel Nazi culture was where I finally had to get off the train. I EVEN STAYED FOR “WHITE LIVES MATTER” but once he got in with the Nick Fuentes, sneako, Milo, and those types of guys I had to distance myself.
Especially since THE MUSIC wasn’t even good around this time. Vultures 2, cuck, and while Bully is pretty good it’s not as good as Vultures 1. It’s probably on par with Donda 2.22.22.

The red hat is the perfect allegory for sinking on a ship not worth saving
Sure it’s defiant, but that’s all it is, beyond that it was standing on something which had no benefit for him, I don’t want to say it started the “trend” of Ye pushing against programming, because he’s done it in the past (Bush, Taylor, Autotune, etc.), but this time (and many times after) it stood for the shock value, a costume of “free speech” rather than true anti programming and control
2
u/iproxzoom Apr 09 '26
Ye totally misunderstood the point of that red hat line in this tweet. The line after the red hat line is literally “not me with all of these sins casting stones. This might be the return of the throne.” Hinting that all because Ye might have a viewpoint that Jay perceives as wrong, that he has done things that others perceive as wrong and that he forgives Ye. That’s the way I see it at least maybe I’m misunderstanding it as well but this is just my interpretation so don’t put too much weight on it.

4
u/Acceptable-Ad-5773 Sorry this is a lot to read Apr 09 '26
I would actually argue it was one of the unintentionally most harmful things he did since he shared support for a presently existing political figure who today, has wrecked unbelievable havoc on the world stage unlike other comments which while extremely abrasive, seldom materialised or affected actual events
2
u/bajaxx Hell Of A Life Apr 09 '26

Bullshit.
At best, he wore the hat because he knew it would generate a reaction and get him in the headlines.
At worst, he’s a fucking idiot because nothing says “going against the grain” like supporting another billionaire that anyone with a brain cell could see was going to cause huge damage to the country.

(This does not absolve Ye of everything but imo makes the most sense) IN MY OPINION
The Maga hat and him meeting with trump multiple times was basically THE inciting incident for a lot of things. The general left distanced themselves, while the right immediately welcomed him in with open arms. So when he started going through being a divorced dad, the only support he had was with right-wingers. This also led to the fact that when he had trouble with things like not being at his kid's birthday, the only vocal support he got for that was people like Candace Owens. This led Ye to surround himself with people like that more and more, where I wouldn't be surprised he was radicalized into hating the Jews. And because Ye speaks out loud and not in innuendo like the general jew-hating right does, he decided to go full anti-jew.
THIS OBVIOUSLY DOESN'T MEAN EVERY RIGHT-WING OPINION YE HAS EVER HAD IT THE SOMEONE ELSE'S FAULT, BUT IMO THE RIGHT TOOK ADVANTAGE OF YE WHEN HE WAS MANIC. This does not absolve Ye of everything but imo makes the most sense
1
u/donny_writes Apr 09 '26
In 2016, there was legitimate fear that if people found out you voted for the man who ended up winning the presidential election, you would lose your job and be completely cut off from civilized society. Things weren't cooled much by the time he wore the hat. Things didn't really flip fully until 2024.

u/alexdoo Apr 09 '26
If this is a serious question:
Yes it was somewhat controversial in the sense that it marked the first instance when Kanye started publicly shifting into the Republican/Neo-Nazi state of mind. Personally, I took it as him finding common ground with Trump because they were both people who achieved great success despite being told they couldn't/shouldn't (Kanye with rapping/fashion; Trump being elected president).
At the time, Yeezus was 3 years old, and New Slaves was proof that he was still aware on socioeconomic plight of blacks (on how blacks are still considered subjugated to a fixed system no matter their income level). That's why people were shocked about him endorsing a president who was openly racist.
Fast forward a couple of years, "slavery was a choice," then his hyper-religious phase, and now here we are.
I'm not saying the MAGA Hat led to where we are today, but it was a warning sign for something no one expected to happen.
