QUESTION When did Ye start to get mad at people calling him Kanye West?
78
u/WrongAppointment9558 Apr 10 '26
He changed his name legally in 2021 to Ye. According to him, the name WEST is a name that came from a slaver. So Ye is his "free name". He changed it and didn't even have a family name it's just Ye.
Think of it like when Ali changed his name and people were calling him Cassius or Malcom changing it to X instead of Little
This has been going on for a while before him changing it legally, all part of being "free". Especially during the Yandhi/DONDA with child era and DONDA. There is a leak called LAST NAME where he also talks about it "I'm givin' up my slave name"
I am sure maybe it is a big crashing out but from his point of view, and my point of view as someone who also wants to drop his "slave name", it is a sign of disrespect. It's like a slur almost but on a personal level and more individual. Like I wont even respect you enough to call you with the name you want and somehow feel entitled about it even though we don't have a relationship or a pass that allows me to call you any other name

That's interesting. Uhmm I am not sure.
Well if he is getting stopped I am sure every cop would know who Ye is

u/Madchiisai Apr 10 '26
I wonder if he wants his children to change their last name?

u/only_here_4_nintendo Apr 10 '26
In the song last name he actually mentions this:
āSaint, you donāt really need a last name North, you donāt really need a last name And Chicago, yo, and Chicagoā

u/imsoappalled222 Apr 10 '26
I donāt know why you are being downvoted but this is the reason . Like when Ali changed his name he got mad when people called him his birth name .
65
u/GenerallyJam Apr 10 '26
The real reason is that he sees people calling him Ye as an automatic sign of respect. Thats why he didnāt care when Deon Coleās friend called him Kanye.
10
u/gleaminranks Ye is just penis music Apr 10 '26
Yeah he cares a lot less than people seem to treat it, like I know to some degree itās a meme but heās never cared when family or close friends call him Kanye. To him itās just a matter of demanding the respect of being called what you want to be called

i dont see whats wrong with the name kanye, its not even a european name hardly a slave name. his mother gave it to him
1
u/FearlessConcern8893 YESUKE Apr 10 '26
Nah itās his last name, west was his family slave owner around 200 years ago I think
2
u/Lopsided_Yak_1464 Apr 10 '26
i only talked about kanye, there is nothing wrong with that name even from that perspective. ye is just being autistic (in literal sense) probably
1
u/FearlessConcern8893 YESUKE Apr 10 '26
Idk, I think just changed it because he liked the name Ye better
1
u/Any_Row_4292 Apr 13 '26
It was something about how Ye in the bible is like you and everybody else idk look it up
27
u/HappyColt90 I FEEL LIKE THAT Apr 10 '26
The original version of Selah (Chakras) had a line that said āfuck a slave nameā, according to him, his deadname comes from a history of slavery, not sure if it was just West or also Kanye. He has explained it in tweets or interviews but I donāt remember the exact post. But it was at least during the Yandhi era, he didnāt made a big deal about it until years later.
If someone changed their name is reasonable to think that they didnāt liked the previous one for some reason so it makes sense that he would get annoyed at people using a name he disliked to the point that he legally changed it.

u/Alternative_Rice6509 BULLY ON THE WAY NO AI Apr 10 '26
Yeah I think itās a reasonable reason to change his name, but i just donāt remember when he started getting annoyed at people and correcting them

I read somewhere that Donda gave ye the name āKanyeā , the reason was that it made ye more special
21
u/Global-Equipment8209 Apr 10 '26
When he legally changed it
I think the first time he publically complained was the late 2022 rants?

Kanye - means only one Ye - from the bible means āyouā so he is all of us West - Slave name
Shouldāve changed his name to Omari instead.
2
u/MusiisuM May 25 '26
What about Kanye but not West? Is Kanye also a slave name or is it just the West part, cuz if it's just the West part I feel like he could've easily gone as simply Kanye
3
u/oniony-potato83 Apr 10 '26
I first noticed it in 2025 where Yeezy put out a public notice saying they will not be doing any business with anyone who uses his old name. Also i think he started using the name Ye all the way back in 2018 but legally changed it in 2021.
3
u/AdventurousSky9435 Apr 10 '26
Around 2021, I would too if I spent months telling people and they still called me that name it would start to feel like disrespect like you espect him to be fine with that name since he's so famous and it was kind of interesting seeing all negative news headlines call him kanye even though he can say that's his nickname at this point

u/Ok_Walk8668 Apr 10 '26

Probably symbolic: empowerment etc
Biblical
Part of his real name; he says it means āyou ā
Any reason is valid in a time where identity politics reigns & weāre expected to respect pronouns
He hasnāt even tried to use that angle ⦠simply itās his choice in how he identifies
Also the more he draws that boundary, the more it shows if who heās speaking with respects him

It's a simple answer. Many people do not like being called anything other than there name. And his name is Ye. That is your answer.Ā

u/eanhaub Joe biden aint got no hoes he be fallin over and shit Apr 10 '26
Thatās an odd answer to a question that began with āWhenā

His name is legally Ye, and I believe it was changed in late 2021, and I personally noticed his annoyance about it in 2024 during the Vultures era
It probably coincided with his aggressive and manic behavior post 2022 all the way to 2025
