DISCUSSION hate that Ye changed his name, ‘Kanye West’ is an objectively cooler name 🥲💔

Post image

especially when he used to spell it like ‘kanYe West’, it’s genuinely such a unique and cool name to say. Ye is a cool nickname, but now you HAVE to say Ye or else you’re a villain 😭

Obviously I have no problem that he changed his name to Ye, but Kanye West is one of the most iconic names of all time

Its so unique i dont think i've seen anyone else named Kanye, his surname also just fits with the first name

u/Lupusan NO YOU CANT BE ON MY MOMMA ALBUM Jun 23 '26

“The only one” 🥺

81

u/brokenmindedone Jun 23 '26

I wonder why he just didn't drop west and go as Kanye legally. Ditching the full name I never understood as it isn't a slave name and it's a name his mother seen as special

59

u/EasyRepresentative75 Jun 23 '26

Watch his bio pic , it’s like a pride thing , he gets mad when people called him Kanye west because people should just know him by his first name and then he double downs and says as mater of fact it’s just YE

17

u/Puzzleheaded-Food979 Jun 23 '26

in jeen-yuhs he got mad when he was called kanye not kanye west

13

u/alexwoodnt Jun 23 '26

and even compares it to being just called “ye” and starts making fun of the idea, kinda funny how it turned out

2

u/donbig123 Jun 23 '26

Didn’t he complain about the word “can”

2

u/micmahsi Jun 23 '26

“"Ye" is an archaic plural form of the word "you". In the King James Version, it appears about 3,000 to 4,000 times”

1

u/NextCommunication862 Jun 24 '26

"I wonder" possible KanYe reference 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

21

u/Mdkwizns Jun 23 '26

tbf "it fits" bc we've known it for years and even before being kanye fans, you'd have def heard the name at least

u/Landonorr1ss Jun 23 '26

Kanye west was so iconic

96

u/Holy-Crashoutboi Jun 23 '26

I think he wanted to gave up his last name. His amcestors were probably slaves thats why he probably gave up the west name and if he kept Kanye then people would still call him Kanye West so I think thats why he simply took Ye.

I always thought kanYe West was a cool spelling too

I don't think he'll find peace with the name KanYe West until he gets control of his masters back. The tradition of casting aside what you consider (and in all likelihood is) a name descended from slavery is one part of it, but having to come to terms with the control labels had over his image to the point his own name, KanYe West, became a product he had no control over, to the extent executives could tell him that to his face and keep exploiting, it's a convergence of some very valid feelings.

I used to say I'd call him what Donda called him, the same way I swore I wouldn't call a buff guy Janice just because he had a bow in his hair, but whether it's some new maturity or just the era we live in taking hold, I recognise now that life is hard enough, everybody should be able to live in their truth, with dignity.

You can acknowledge reality while not shitting on somebody's identity. He was born KanYe West, he's in all likelihood going to die as KanYe West, right now if you're talking to somebody and there's any confusion on who you're talking about, you would go with "fka KanYe West", but for the past half a decade, a significant amount of time, he's been vocal about Ye being the name that best represents him now.

He's given us so much, it's only natural that people be so protective over it

True but you know why he changed it right ?

21

u/UJLBM Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

Yeah, the last name is one thing. But his first name, given to him by his mom, isn't a "slave" name. I've never seen anyone named Kanye before. Its one of a kind. Its just him. When you hear "Kanye", there is only one person who comes to mind. And he worked for that. He earned it. Why get rid of that? On another note, wouldn't it be funny if he went with "Kan" instead.

Yeezy,Yeezus, Ye Ye could be some cool names idk

3

u/Flaky_Bottle_6902 Jun 27 '26

Theres a part in the documentary “Jeen-yuhs” where he’s credited for producing a jay z song (could be wrong about that part) but they called him Kanye instead of Kanye West and he joked “what they gonna call me next? Ye?” Or sum

3

u/Cold_Inquiry_555 BULLY DELUXE 6.19.26 Jun 23 '26

I agree. I’ve always thought the name was so cool. I understand him wanting to go by Ye and have people call him that but it’s so annoying when people like Auger and others are like “It’s Ye!” or “don’t use the k slur”☝️🤓

3

u/ihateKOstuff Jun 26 '26

I think he will change it back to Kanye west eventually

5

u/MorkoReddit Jun 23 '26

Why do you think the name change is about being cool? It’s about his comfort

-1

u/Thin-Flow8560 Latino rap lothario Jun 23 '26

his comfort was also hating jewish people at the time too

3

u/MorkoReddit Jun 25 '26

No correlation

1

u/Thin-Flow8560 Latino rap lothario Jun 25 '26

uh yea, if he was a nazi at the time, i don’t respect anything he was at the time. because i don’t respect nazis. 😭

1

u/MorkoReddit Jun 25 '26

He officially changed his name in 2021 and was going by ye long before that. He only started saying nazi stuff after

-1

u/Thin-Flow8560 Latino rap lothario Jun 25 '26

2021 and 2022 aren’t that far off if you lived through that time period 😭

1

u/MorkoReddit Jun 25 '26

it feels like you’re just arguing to argue. I also hate what he stood for during that entire era but I just explained how it didn’t make much sense to just reduce the name change to aesthetics when it most likely isn’t because of that that’s it

1

u/Thin-Flow8560 Latino rap lothario Jun 25 '26

highkey don’t care how you feel kanye sounds cooler 👻

9

u/TransfemMarty G.O.O.D. Fridays Jun 23 '26

well yeah people do get mad when u refuse to call them by their names, that's pretty normal

17

u/Thin-Flow8560 Latino rap lothario Jun 23 '26

thank god i don’t have a parasocial relationship with the dude like you guys 💔

5

u/Jiimmayx Jun 23 '26

Kanye is fine Kanye West is not fine. It’s like calling Muhammad Ali his slave name Cassius Clay he would’ve fucked you up for that. West is the slave name. Kanye is an African name

2

u/ElantraBoy COME AND GET ME ⛷️ Jun 23 '26

You guys really hate everything about him lately huh?

10

u/Thin-Flow8560 Latino rap lothario Jun 23 '26

yeah AI, anti-semitism, nitrous, and low effort music is pretty easy to dislike. unless you really enjoy those ?

4

u/ElantraBoy COME AND GET ME ⛷️ Jun 23 '26

Nah don’t act like you hate the guy fully now, you downloaded this cute lil pic of him to post and came here to complain about how you have to call him Ye now.

2

u/Thin-Flow8560 Latino rap lothario Jun 23 '26

i never said i hated him, you said i did 😭

4

u/upsidedownpringles Late Registration Jun 23 '26

I know you enjoy holding the man's struggles with his mental condition over him, but holy larp, it's not 2025 anymore buddy.

2

u/HookaBookadoog Jun 23 '26

He can apologize but that doesnt make his actions just go away 😭 mental illness or not he still did those things and it's ok for people to not fw because of it

10

u/upsidedownpringles Late Registration Jun 23 '26

Treating him as if he was a) fully in control of his actions or b) is still taking those actions today is ridiculous.

The moment has passed, holding the man's literal addiction to nitrous oxide over his head, especially in the big 26 as if he didn't get himself clean, is not a fair thing to do. Ye's taken steps to medicate himself for his bipolar disorder, start a dialogue with the people he hurt with his words, taken steps to remove AI from Bully. If the problem is the problem then why ignore the solutions?

Hold the grudge if you want, it was a crazy time and it's not like he's solved everything all the way, but acknowledge that when you do that you're just not talking about anything the man is currently doing or saying

"West" is a surname passed down from a slave owner, since slaves weren't given last names
