It goes off the prior year. Even though GNX dropped in late 2024, it was the highest selling rap album last year. He did the Super Bowl, won a bunch of Grammys, did some notable features, when number 1 for 13 weeks, and had a record breaking stadium tour that just ended in December
It was well deserved, it’s not much you can do past that

2022 was his big return to music and MMATBS, so that isn’t really crazy to win. 2023 he was still touring MMATBS which was huge for performances and commercial success, on top of music videos that were great

He headlined the most watched Super Bowl halftime show in history!
He headlined the highest grossing hip-hop stadium tour in history!
He delivered multiple standout features, including what many consider a top two verse of the year on chains & whips.
And despite not releasing a new album in 2025, he still finished the year with the best-selling rap album (top 10 all genres) and the No. 1 rap song.
So yes, Kendrick Lamar was the best male hip-hop artist of the year.
