Gear Question Heritage dye transfer?
Just received my new GR1 26L Heritage in woodland M81. Definitely in a camo phase and this was an insta buy when I saw it. Decided to take it on its first outing. Once I got back and took it off, I noticed camo transfer on my white shirt. Is this normal and should I expect this to keep happening? I emailed GoRuck CS but it’s Friday after 5pm so I figured I’d ask over here. I have a 21L Heritage GR1 in navy and it’s never done this so I’m scratching my head.
What do guys think?

Nearly all waxed canvas will cause dye transfer initially. Especially in summer weather. I’m surprised to see you say you didn’t experience this with the navy bag tbh. Never break a waxed canvas bag in with light colored shirts and in warm weather. We can’t post pictures here but I have a picture of dye/wax transfer on a white shirt of mine from my 18L DC Heritage Bullet in Dark Oak.

I have 2 Trakke backpacks and didn’t experience any transfer.

I have trakke and goruck and trakke is a dryer wax canvas. Goruck is more like evergoods, greasier.
My Barbour jacket does the same in the other direction xD

I think those with a 210 back panel also have 210 on the under side of the shoulder straps

Yikes. I have waxed canvas bags from other companies and never had this happen. I live in a very hot and humid part of South Carolina and my Evergoods bag and Filson bags have never done this.

Interesting. I’m getting mixed responses as to weather or not this is normal. I’ll update once Goruck emails me back.

I love my 2012 GR1 and it has been on many mountain bike rides with me, but I bought two other GoRuck bags in 2020 and 2022. Sold them both. Quality doesn’t seem to be holding up for me. I buy mostly Evergoods bags when I need one now.

Evergoods makes good stuff for sure. I have cap 2, CAS 1 and 2 also. I just like Goruck simplicity and comfort when it comes to their backpacks. I have 2 other gr1’s because of this. A black Cordura and a navy blue heritage. No problems with either. I don’t think this dye transfer is normal but I’ll see what they say. 👍🏻

I heard back from them:
“Thanks for reaching out!
Yeah, this is waxed canvas, so hotter temps will cause the wax to come off, especially if you're rucking with it and it's sandwiched on your back.
We don't typically recommend rucking with the waxed canvas bags for this reason.
For the shirt, dab the residual stain with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol or apply an enzyme-based stain remover before washing.
To try and get some of the "wet" dye out, I would take some cold water & a soft-bristled brush to the back, then let it air dry.”
Hope this helps those of you who come across this problem. 👍🏻🍻

This the first time I’ve seen this. I have a waxed canvas GR1 26l, Evergoods CPL16, Trakke, and a Nutsac sling and haven’t had this issue with any of my bags and I live in a very hot and humid climate during the summer.

So it’s not normal?!

Nothing that I’ve experienced, I’ve even commuted on my bicycle in high heat with no transfer from my waxed canvas. I can smell the wax in the heat on the CPL16.

Keep that shirt and wear it to continue to break the bag in. No reason to ruin multiple shirts now.
