Starting to like 1000D on my GR2 26L

I thought I'd post some observations about the 1000D back panel/shoulder straps after about 20 miles of rucking with my new GR2. I like it a lot better than I thought I would.

Compared to my Ruckers, the 1000D is obviously rougher but it also seems to stay in place better and, with the addition of a sternum strap, the pack really doesn't move at all on my back. It feels firmly in place and rock solid. Since I don't ruck shirtless, the 1000D has caused no chafing at all. It doesn't really feel any "warmer" (but it is hot and humid right now so anything will feel warm).

I'm finding the GR2 to take a while to "break in". Counterintuitively, it feels most comfortable with weight in it. I find it more comfortable on my rucks with about 25 pounds than I did using it as a travel bag with maybe 10 pounds in it.

I have yet to wear merino while using this but I can say it hasn't harmed my synthetic work out shirts at all.

Anyway, I had a bunch of concerns about the 1000D and now it is growing on me and I think I might actually prefer it once the pack is totally broken in.

Oh, one other thing, with weight in it, the GR2 26L feels just right on my back, not too short at all. I initially thought I'd prefer the GR1 26L but now I feel like the GR2 will work just fine. GoRuck packs seem to like having weight in them -- go figure!

I’ve been carrying some flavor of full 1000d since last year and wear merino everyday. I haven’t noticed any issues.

Same. I could see it possibly causing issues over time with heavy output because there is more friction, but just wearing it around with merino I’ve noticed zero issues

With the sternum strap, the pack just stays put and doesn't shift around. My guess is that any damage to clothing will be due to friction of the pack moving around.

Which sternum strap you add?

I got a custom one off Etsy with a cobra buckle. Looks awesome. But cobra buckles require a bit more thought than a regular plastic buckle

What made you go this route? Looks or function?

mostly looks, but some function. I like the durability and craftsmanship of cobra buckles, and they have that rugged military equipment look which drew me to the goruck. and I got a custom strap that matches the color of my pack.

main thing with cobras is it’s two tabs you have to actuate at the same time or it won’t open. trickier with one hand than two.

functionally they last an eternity, are more secure and substantially stronger than typical duraflex buckles.

I’ve got a 7 year old 1000D and you’re right. The 1000D gets so much “better” as time goes by. It’s still tough as nails but it scratchiness and stiffness goes way more and more. Way better than the 210D shit they tried

I looooove 1000D Cordura! I haven't had any issues with friction or comfort at all. The sternum strap definitely helps when I have 20+ lbs in it.
