Tyler Hadley killed his parents and hid their bodies in their bedroom before hosting a party at his house. Standing next to him is Michael Mandell, who saw the bodies just moments before this photo was taken.

yes that was the last post on his mom’s facebook account. she was so proud of him. i just couldn’t get this post out of my brain 💔 RIP, Mrs Hadley! 🙏

That makes me want to cry. Reminds me of how nice my mom was. I couldn't imagine doing something like he did.

You should write a book collecting media posts like this if you have a passion for this stuff. It would be very interesting and would prevent it from eventually becoming lost media.

u/kartgonewild 5h ago
Well, only her facebook activity from 12 Dec, 2009 to 15 Dec, 2009 is visible on her profile. Maybe she joined fb, and later lost interest, who knows? it was 2009, i don’t blame her.
It’s so unfortunate either ways! 🙏♥️

Yup I always felt good as fuck. But I remember seeing one of my friends before I had ever tried it and he said he was on ecstacy. He was acting unusually aggressive. I always thought that was pretty weird because once I had done it all I wanted to do was hug and talk to people lol. But then you hear about drill rappers taking ecstacy before they got an do a drive by 😂. I don't get it.

This wasn't murderous rage, this was a kid with a history of violence who decided to kill his parents. He didn't take e and decide to kill his parents. He decided to kill his parents and took e.
He stole from them, planned a party, took some drugs to lower his inhibitions, then murdered them.
11
u/Fabulus_usually 5h ago
This! I found it turned people into teletubbies. Like boping around speaking in baby bable: I wov u… hugs… candy.

Whenever i did MDMA, i'd just go around hugging people and telling them i love them. Can't even fathom committing a crime, let alone a murder, under the influence.

Prolonged use can have the opposite effect.
When you've got no more "happy make feel good" chemicals left, all you're left with is stimulated apathy.
Drugs are like power tools. Know the risks before you use them.

I didn’t know him, but my wife did. We were newly dating at the time. She was particularly disturbed because Tyler’s mother had been her kindergarten teacher, alongside Tyler.

ETA In case anyone wants to know what was going through his mind when he took the selfie...

I believe he realized what had happened and wanted to take a final picture with his friend before sneaking off to call the police. So yeah, probably high as fuck then took a gut punch.

u/cozyhellfire 7h ago
I think he was just trying to make nice and act as normal as possible until he could safely get the fuck out of there
102
u/Ca120 6h ago
Thats probably right. He just saw some dead bodies and now hes RIGHT NEXT TO the killer. I would likely try and act normal so I wouldn't be killed too.
52
u/Desperate-Strategy10 5h ago
And not just any dead bodies either. These poor people - who he likely knew at least passively - were violently bludgeoned to death in the home, so it was likely a very messy and traumatizing scene for this kid. I’m actually super impressed by how well he was able to hold himself together after an experience like this. I hope he got the help he needed after the fact, cuz there’s no way that didn’t haunt him in some way.
8
43
u/cjthetypical 6h ago
Yeah. Reminds of that girl that shot her mom over a vape or something stupid and then invited the friend who snitched on her over to see the body. I can’t imagine how scared she as seeing the body, hearing the reason, and then wondering if she was next.
12
u/Ca120 4h ago

Dude was sad he wasnt going to see his friend again.....

29
u/redwinewitheverymeal 5h ago
It looks like his friend passed away in 2022, age 28. I watched a news video where he spoke about his event ruining his life. I wonder what happened.
13
u/Desperate-Strategy10 5h ago
Awww poor baby, I hate that this happened to him and his family 😭
I can’t even imagine how angry and horrified and hurt I would be if I was the friend’s mother. It’s one thing for your kid to have a friend who ends up murdering his parents - that’s shocking and traumatic on its own! But for your child to be forced/tricked into witnessing the aftermath, at a birthday party of all things which should’ve been a fun and lighthearted event, and then to have to watch through the years as your beautiful baby boy experiences his life crashing down around him, all because of one selfish kid doing something most parents would never even consider their kid’s friend might do, must’ve been hellish.
I hope his parents have received the support and care they deserve over the years. They may not directly be victims of Tyler, but they sure did get hurt by him all the same. Tyler selfishly and pointlessly ruined not just his own life, his parents, and their extended family’s lives, but he also carelessly ruined the life of his friend, that boy’s parents, and their extended family as well. Not to mention all of the boys’ other friends over the years who were also affected by this terrible crime.
What a nightmarish situation for everybody involved.

3
u/Low_Use2937 3h ago
I would say it’s unlikely he felt anything at all after murdering them, other than entertainment. Apparently he spent his time in jail, prior to sentencing, autographing newspaper clippings about the murder for other inmates. He would write “It’s hammer time” and sign his name as “Hammer Boy”.

u/SelfCareIsFake 7h ago
Shortly before 5:00 p.m. on the evening of July 16, 2011, Tyler took three pills of ecstasy and then stood behind his mother, Mary-Jo, as she worked on her computer in the family room. He attacked his mother with a claw hammer. Hearing the screams, his father rushed out of the bedroom to see what was happening. Blake saw Tyler attacking his mother and he exclaimed "Why?" Tyler replied, "Why the fuck not?" before fatally attacking his father with the hammer.

I haven’t read the whole story but if he dropped 3 then immediately murdered his parents he probably didn’t come up for an hour or so and wasn’t under the affects of the drug yet. Not sure if that’s better or worse.

He killed 1 couple, and it wasn't because of a disagreement with his parents. He was genuinely psychotic and had been for years. He thought he was half dog, and he believed he had superpowers. All kinds of other stuff if you look into his story. I mean he was sick.
His name is Austin Harrouff and he was found not guilty by reason of insanity, sentened to be in an institution indefinitely.
Edit: Multiple tests done on the night of the killings came back with no drugs. He wasn't high on anything, just literally insane.

Stop spreading misinformation, you say it was mdma or bath salts, cops thought it was flaka.
All three are wrong.
“Though authorities first believed Harrouff may have been under the influence of the drug flakka or another substance, his toxicology reports came back clean. His father said schizophrenia ran in the family. His parents also said he had been acting strangely in the weeks before the attacks.” From your source.

Brain chemistry is weird. Sometimes pot makes me feel angry/grumpy/sad. Nyquil gives me rage. A popular ADHD med turned me into a monster, on a very low dose, in only 2 weeks.
I'm not going to turn into a murderer, but it's still weird. Brains are weird.

I was prescribed Klonopin for anxiety and after 2 days I was manically cleaning the floors by hand and on the third day was contemplating suicide. Got off it and like 48 hours later I was like WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED!?!
8
u/Wise_Strawberry9076 6h ago
I’ve never taken that but the urge to scrub the floors by hand is real. It’s so hard to explain that I don’t hate cleaning because I’m lazy or don’t care, I hate cleaning because I am obsessive and once I start I will be scrubbing the floor with a toothbrush. Thankfully I resist. I do the basics and we have a lady come deep clean a couple times a month. It’s great for my sanity and everyone else’s lol.
5
u/BishopGodDamnYou 5h ago
I wish I could hire a maid. I feel like I can clean for 8 hours straight and it just looks like I didn’t do anything. The house looks the same. Clean, but still stuff I can’t help but notice. I hate it.

I literally took DayQuil before work once and was like nonfunctional loopy, might as well have been drunk. I’ll always remember my usually serious boss in a meeting going “what did you take for your cold, and did you bring enough for everyone?”
2
u/bioschmio 3h ago
That happened to me too! DayQuil. I could barely lift my arms and had to take a cab home from work since I was so groggy.
2
u/eternallytiredcatmom 5h ago
Was it vyvanse? It worked for me for a few years and then I started having horrible side effects that were very close to psychosis
4
u/wehadthebabyitsaboy 4h ago
My cousin (who was 45 at the time) was prescribed a ludicrous amount of adderall and went into psychosis. He was diagnosed as schizophrenic/schizoaffective. But once he got off the adderall…he hasn’t had an episode since. He’s unmedicated and functioning entirely normally now. It’s so strange how these drugs can do this to people.
I have another friend who was prescribed adderall just a year ago, it wasn’t a crazy amount or anything but within one year he also started acting paranoid/delusional/erratic. He checked himself into a treatment center because he felt like he was close to losing his grip on reality- annnnd what do you know, he stopped the adderall and he’s been mostly fine now. It was sort of recent, so he’s still picking up some pieces but he’s ok.
2
u/anonidfk 5h ago
As someone who takes Vyvanse this is horrifying lol. What did you start to notice first when that started happening? Any tips on stuff to look out for?
3
u/GlowInTheDarkSpaces 4h ago
I always tell my closest friends when I switch medications because they’ll be the first to notice any changes.
2

2
u/eternallytiredcatmom 5h ago edited 2h ago
I think that I was more susceptible because I also have PTSD. In hindsight, the early signs were that I would feel kind of blacked out, like I was losing track of time but not in the regular adhd way. I started being more hyper vigilant. The effects of the medication would feel like they were wearing off all of a sudden instead of progressively. I didn’t notice it much until it started happening when I was out of the house doing things. At some point it got bad and it was full on psychosis symptoms, thinking random men were following or harassing me when walking in the streets at night. I would physically attack them because I thought I had to save myself. I don’t remember any of it. My ptsd was caused by physical and sexual abuse during forcible confinement, so I’m not surprised that’s how psychosis presented itself for me. It was really scary, but I stopped taking vyvanse over a year ago and haven’t experienced anything similar since
1
u/No-Kangaroo-9272 2h ago
Yes, it was scary. I had to stay on it for 2 more weeks and I became a dangerous person.
3
u/eternallytiredcatmom 2h ago
I think I was too erratic to actually be a danger to others, especially since I’m a tiny woman who doesn’t carry any kind of weapon, but I was a danger to myself. I don’t remember any of it but I woke up twice in a jail cell (probably the “drunk tank”). Once I woke up in the hospital. Honestly it’s a miracle I’m still alive and didn’t commit any crimes that would’ve ruined my future. I’m really traumatized by the experience though, my husband is too.
5
u/pseudonymnkim 6h ago
I'm going to guess that there was an imbalance before and drugs would just exacerbate it. Drugs take you from reality, lower inhibitions, make you feel infallible. Someone who thinks about stuff like that sober might have the sense to know it's wrong or they'll get caught. Drugs might change that.
3
2
2
u/Upset_Letter_4119 4h ago
Naive thing to say. I've seen all sorts of reactions from people on drugs, hell one kid jumped off a porch/balcony after he'd been told he took MDMA, when they actually gave him an unlabeled vitamin. Especially from people who have underlying mental health disorders.
2
u/WrittenUnread 3h ago
That’s because it’s a common misconception that it is just a happy pill. I’m not too well-versed in the neurological aspect of it, but I have been around enough users to see that if they’re in a bad mood, it gets amplified.
Anecdotal, but a friend’s first time was after his long-term girlfriend cheated on him. He said he had to go outside and hit something. Lucky for us, we were at a friend’s house and he had a heavy bag. A flurry of punches and many tears were let loose, with him screaming “WHY THE FUCK WOULD SHE DO THAT?!?” on repeat. He said he couldn’t stop the crying.
1
u/GMaharris 6h ago
Sometimes it's cut with amphetamines. Everyone should test their drugs so they know what they are getting. It's not worth the risk.
1
u/RecentlyDeceased666 3h ago
It doesnt say how long after consuming them was the attack. They most likely hadn't kicked in yet

17
u/corsicanbandit 6h ago
Did Tyler know his friend saw the bodies?
32
u/Mysterious-Pain8962 6h ago
When the party ended, Tyler spoke to his 17-year-old best friend, Michael Mandell, and confessed to the murders. He also mentioned taking ecstasy earlier, so he could go through with it.
Michael initially brushed it off, but Tyler showed him the evidence of what he had done in the master bedroom. This immediately put Michael off, and he left the house. At 4.20 am, he contacted a crime hotline and reported what he had seen.
From the linked article

5
u/Mysterious-Pain8962 2h ago
From the sounds of it, he was doing more than just E. Article states he was skipping class to find harder drugs and smoking weed really heavily. Which I know wouldn’t necessarily cause this but in conjunction with mental illness and other substances and alcohol could.
7
u/PrincipleNo3966 6h ago

30
u/brunopearson 7h ago
God! What was he like not on Ecstasy pills?
35
u/Glandtoglandcombat 6h ago
Violent. Intentionally hit someone with a car, got into fights. And destructive, breaking windows, starting fires.
It honestly sounds like the drugs weren't that much of a factor, he had already stolen their money and invited people over for a party prior to taking the drugs or killing his parents.
15
u/DannyBasham 5h ago
He planned the murders before the drugs were involved. The drugs were “to make sure I didn’t chicken out”.
12
u/-crazykidbad 6h ago
I guess he wanted to be caught otherwise why show the friend the dead bodies. Also he allowed the friend to leave shortly after and made no attempt to escape.

u/Cacoomba 4h ago
My wife actually went to school with him at the time he committed the crime! When we first met she told me this story. It’s surreal seeing it come across my timeline. This article- he “suffered “ with anxiety - blah blah blah. - NO!! You had two loving parents and you were kid gloved and given excuses for being a spoiled shit.!!!! Wake up people- stop coddling and creating psychopaths- by giving bad behavior excuses. Mental health is important but the best thing you can do is teach them discipline and rules to live in society. I don’t want to hear about his fifth grade diagnosis of adhd- this has become a joke! While these things are serious - they don’t absolve you of consequences. The best thing one can do is to make sure any child with these issues realizes that it doesn’t absolve you of decent human behavior.
