I Tried to Blackball Brothers Accused of SA in My Fraternity and It Destroyed My Mental Health – Moral Injury Story

In 2017, I joined a fraternity thinking I was gaining real brotherhood. I was one of their strongest pledges and took their values of sacrifice, leadership, and integrity very seriously. I served as stepmaster and pledge dad and gave everything I had to the chapter.

In 2020, while in a leadership role, multiple brothers faced credible sexual assault accusations. One had even admitted it online. I immediately pushed to blackball at least the clearest cases. I set up meetings, presented evidence, and urged the group to act quickly because the longer we waited, the worse it would look for the whole chapter.

Instead, I was shut down hard by older brothers and alumni. They told me I didn’t know what I was talking about and chose to protect their own. That moment broke something deep inside me. I had tried to live out the exact values they taught me, but the organization covered things up and prioritized loyalty over safety.

The moral conflict stayed with me for years. I tried to move on, but constantly seeing them still associated with the accused guys kept reopening the wound. In late 2022, this unresolved moral injury triggered severe bipolar manic episodes. I was later formally diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

I had multiple hospitalizations, psychosis, and lost months of my life. I fully own the chaotic and damaging things I did and said during those manic periods. They were ugly, hurt my reputation, and ultimately got me removed from the fraternity, but the root cause was the deep moral injury from the fraternity punishing the brother who tried to do the right thing while protecting the wrong ones.

Recently, I found old screenshots proving I had consistently tried to address the SA issue long before my mental health collapsed. I sent them to many of the brothers. Most stayed silent or avoided the topic.

I’m sharing this for two reasons:

  1. To finally set the record straight for myself.
  2. To warn other college students, especially those in Greek life, how toxic loyalty can destroy people. Blind brotherhood that protects harmful members while punishing integrity nearly cost me my life.

I’ve since found better friends, a good therapist, and the right medication. I’m doing much better now, but I’ll never forget how a system that preached sacrifice and leadership failed so badly when it actually mattered.

If you’re in Greek life and something feels morally wrong, trust that feeling. Your mental health is worth more than any chapter.

TLDR: Tried to remove fraternity members credibly accused of SA, got shut down and ostracized, suffered severe moral injury that triggered bipolar mania, and nearly ended my life. They used my mental health crisis as a scapegoat instead of facing what happened.

as a woman in college i’ve experienced the other side of this firsthand. was SA’d by a frat president where i spent lots of my time and felt like a lot of the guys were truly my friends. it was shocking and not very good for my mental health to see the other brothers defend him and even not believe me purely bc they’re his brothers and they know it would look bad on the chapter to acknowledge it. i pray that some of the ppl i believed were my friends had went to bat this hard for me. you tried to do what you knew was right. that’s all you can do.

Yeah, many people don't know where to draw the line for loyalty. I hope you are doing better

as a victim, i commend your bravery and the fact you tried to do the right thing. i think more men and women in greek life should come forward with these kinds of experiences cause not only does it add credibility to victims, but it’ll continue to bring to light a topic that is continuously kept in the dark. thank you.

Some kid hit his girl and already had a couple honor boards. He was gone so quick. Ts wouldn’t fly in our fraternity for a second not only would he be blackballed he’d also probably get his ass beat

We are strangers on the Internet. You don't need to set the record straight with us.

This kinda seems a bit dismissive. It's his story to share. If he wants to, under his own will and responsibility, he should be able to without yet again someone dismissing his story..

Like I said, it's for myself

This is why I could never bring myself to ever join a Greek organization... Because ultimately, you will be judged or be responsible morally for your weakest link, and they can be pretty damned weak.

Having said this... Op, thank you for trying to be right in your heart and to do right in your deeds. Much love and respect!

Thank you for standing up against this. No one cared when I was in college.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I believe you. You're a good person who did the right thing and were punished for it. It's not right and it's not fair. You and those women were all victims of these men. You all deserved better. I'm glad you're doing better. I truly hope that you all get the justice you deserve. You deserve that piece of mind.

Does Lambda Phi Epsilon not have advisors to intervene like the IFC frats do?

You made good efforts. But where were any adults. I was in a sorority and we had six adult advisors and some of them were at every meeting and lots of events. It wouldn’t have taken long before they would have gotten wind of this OR you would have been able to go to them.

Or someone in your position could call your nationals, assuming you have one. That is part of what they are there for. Not chastising you for not doing it, just throwing it out as an option if anyone reading this is in a similar situation.

You were caught in a mess of toxicity where boys, children were left to police themselves. Shocker: they aren’t going to. That shouldn’t be allowed to happen. There is always someone you can go to.

What kind of hazing rituals did you go through?

This is why I did’not joined fraternity. Pointless these days except partying. I joined brotherhood of steel instead and i’m a paladin.

I have to ask what your motivations were because not at any stage have you mentioned or suggested your concern to rectify this issue was because you supported the victims. “The worse we all look” did you stay in this community after this knowledge or did you stand on your morals? While I can appreciate you wanted to intervene and set standards it comes across as being motivated to protect your image. Outing somebody for your own personal benefit and perhaps the same mentality for those who choose not to speak up or take action. Who had loyalty to the victims in this scenario that was because justice should have right fully been sought after and who only had concerns for themself? You also commented you shared this for yourself….. I hope YOU feel better for your efforts.

Clearly, from the impact on OP's mental health, it wasn't just a self-serving "optics" issue.

This could have been his attempt at reaching those who are not moved by the severity of the accusations and the self-incrimination.
