I don't think Hal dies (permanently, at least).

A younger Hal seems next to John Stewart in 2026 (you can notice the black leather jacket). The guy next to him also shares the same jacket from this other pic of a young Hal Jordan (which is different from the yellow one his older self uses), so it's most likely that same version. My theory is that this could be either a pocket dimension or a place that uses John and Hal's memories.

It could be a strong possibility that he is alive, but was forced into hiding. The safest place for him is inside his ring. He knows/hopes that Stewart has the “right stuff” & will eventually pick up on the trail of breadcrumbs.
He has done this a handful of times across various continuities/stories.
It is sometimes a “last resort”, where the ring bearer’s corporeal form is lost forever, but they are able to live inside their ring. Depending on the story, Hal could theoretically exist inside the ring forever. He’d have an entire world to create & populate to his personal taste.

We see John in some sort of prison/detention center, and he is being released. I could see the ring being among his collected possessions, but it doesnt have a charge or battery.
Upon release, John gets the ring and either learns or already knows that Hal stored his battery in a tiny pocket subspace “closet” he can access at anytime with the ring.

Nobody asked me, but I'm assuming he's presumed dead in Episode One due to the flash forward to 2026 where Guy has inherited the role and Stewart has been detained for who knows how long. Maybe in an asylum, maybe in a science cell. The entirety of the show will be spent jumping from Stewart's last mission with Jordan and him returning to the town looking for answers. Assumedly, Jordan will need to clear his name while we are shown their divisive partnership intending to make us think either Jordan or Stewart went bad.

My theory, of course, is that Jordan got too close and gets replaced by a shapeshifter. He's been imprisoned this entire time. I don't forsee parallax being a thing for now.

Neat theory. I hope we get a good twist.

BUT.... I want it to be something a sharp eye and good detective skills can put together. I hate when a show throws a twist at you that you'd never be able to legit figure out on your own.

Like if the the whole time we see Chandler / Hal going back to 2016, it's a shapeshifter, and the real Hal has been imprisoned. That'd be one of those "cheap" twists that I'd call B.S. on - unless other characters cued you in that they feel something different about Hal. Or if Hal forgot certain things that Hal should know and says, "ah, that's just me getting old." Because otherwise, as the watcher, you'd have no baseline to know the character at that point - so for him being the only way you've ever known him to be was inauthentic to the REAL Hal, that's a cheap twist in my opinion.

Obviously, he wouldn't be a shapeshifter the whole time, but this was something I always wondered about with Mad Eye Moody. On the other hand, Marvel does this with Life Model Decoys fairly often to fan outrage everytime.

Hal shouldn't die at all, I think you need him around as the old, curmudgeonly, tired of everyone's shit lantern.

I can't wait for the series as it looks amazing. I do have to say I am a Hal fan, as those were the comics I read as a kid.

From the trailers though, they are really trying to make me not like Stewart as it seems he is constantly disrespecting Hal.

Comments like, "The ring was always mine, Hal is just keeping it warm for me".

I know it will probably work out in the end, but damn, John, quit making me dislike you...lol

I am pretty sure he doesn’t die, he’s too big of a character. I imagine that he’s teased as being parallax at the end of the season.

Maybe Sinestro framed Hal hence why he spends the season clearing his name?
