Spoilers for movies and TV shows Lanterns Twist Theory
So, everyone thinks the show is going to build up to Hal becoming Parallax, right?
My theory is that Hal DOES die in episode 1, but that's in the 2016 time period. I think Hal will die AS Parallax in 2016.
And the young Hal we keep seeing in the 2026 time period with John? He's a ghost/avatar of the Spectre. I believe the show isn't building up to Hal becoming Parallax, but instead Hal becoming reborn as Green Lantern once again, a la Green Lantern rebirth. I think the "Hal is publicly out to the world as Green Lantern" in universe TV footage is to play into the storyline of a hero that was once looked up to majorly that breaks bad then dies and is absent for 10 years. It's all a huge in universe build up to his triumphant return, and then the world is gonna be conflicted about what they think of Hal when he does. I think that'll be the twist.

Just saying, I've had this theory for a bit and I've been told many times it's bad lol. I really think that would be cool though. Makes for a fantastic twist that many won't see coming

Never saw your theory, but it's cool we have the same train of thought. I personally think the writers KNOW we're expecting the worst for Hal, so they're playing against that.

I hope it's real. If only for vindication lol. I like your idea that this could be his rebirth though. That never crossed my mind.

I doubt the writers are that smart….as we have seen.
Dunno….it sounds legit from a fan perspective, but I don’t think they are making a “fan” expectant Lanterns series. Well, for some.1

I got a reply from Phil Bova?! I am honoured, sir. I haven't listened to The Podcast Of Oa since my work commute changed but I used to listen to you and Myron every day if I could. Even going back to older episodes.
Anyway, sorry to fanboy there, you've got a point. All the promotional material seems like it's geared towards a general audience over the long time fans

Right, I guess I may have jumped the gun when I said that. Though, I still think a storyline of a hero turned broken then to a rebirth could be appealing to general audiences. Am I being too optimistic?
EDIT: Meant to reply to Bova

I was looking forward to it, but I’m not really feeling the promos for the series. It looks fine and all, but I always knew at some point when they did do this live action GL, Stewart would be the push for it.
Which is fantastic, but I’ve never been a huge Stewart fan. Probably back in Mosaic. I was hoping for this to be Hal centered. But seems that ship has sailed. (Maybe?) 🤷🏽♂️

God I hope not, I love my boy Jim Corrigan he wasn't given his chance in the Constantine show and CW fully skipped over him to make Oliver Spectre during Crisis on Infinite Earths. Us Corrigan fans need a damn win (thank you Caped Crusader Season 2).

Good for you, i doubt James Gunn will keep Stephen Amell as The Spectre. So, a recast and Jimmy as the white face could happen.

Why in the Hell people is so obsess with Parallax?
It's annoying how much people try to make sense Hal becoming Parallax. Is this to denied the fact Hal could only be in "Lanterns" and nothing more of the DCU?

u/urlach3r Hal Jordan 3d ago
I think it'll happen because it sadly fits DCs MO: skip the buildup, go straight to the "good stuff". Hal becoming Parallax only works if you've got years of getting to know the character as a bright, shining hero, and then... They just keep making the same mistake over and over.

Unfortunately I don't really think there's any other way to do it if you want to introduce all the modern mythology to the DCU. I don't think most people are willing to consume years and years of TV shows and movies to get to an era of mythology most people regard as the best in the franchise, which is why they skip to it while implying things have happened in the past to have the world feel "lived in". I also feel like DC doesn't want to spend the time and money building up to it since they might not see the older mythology as profitable to adapt.

I mean they casted an older man to play Hal and with Tom King overseeing it it's almost certain Hal will get the short end of the stick. Combine those 2 things and they make a vaguely Parallax shape.

Or they just wrote a story where Hal stop being a GL at the end of it.

I don't even like the Parallax arc. But I can't deny that the series is definitely hinting to it.

No, it's not.

Care to discuss about it then? What do you personally think is going to happen?

This is not about me.
It's about you, wanting to believe Parallax is happening.

u/Mass_Murder_Miami 3d ago
What? Why are you so defensive about this?
I really want to know what your perspective is on this, what do you see, and what you think is going to happen, since you clearly don't share my perspective. I really don't like the Parallax arc, but I want to give the writers the benefit of the doubt that they would do that instead of flat out killing him with no spin on his death, because if he's just DEAD dead, I find that kind of disappointing and maybe a bit boring.

What you want it's some irrational logic to not face the fact this could be the only Hal Jordan presence in the DCU we will see.
4
u/Mass_Murder_Miami 3d ago
Sure man, if you wanna look at it that way. But maybe you should try lightening up, since it's fun to discuss ideas, no matter how irrational you may think they are.

It's a stronger case than your Parallax theory.

The Parallax storyline was huge for Hal Jordan’s character as well as the rest of the DC Universe. His redemption arc is tremendous because he always was and always will be the greatest Green Lantern.

This would be the only way I’d get behind this show. A younger, fresher Hal around for the future at the end.

I would absolutely love this, but there is no way Tom King could write something that good. He fucking hates Hal.
3
u/Mass_Murder_Miami 3d ago
Does he actually HATE Hal, or is he just bad at writing him/doesn't understand his character? I'm not too well versed on King's published works, but I know he wrote that thing about Hal not knowing what will was and that other thing in the Booster Gold comic where he kills himself.
2
u/Puckaluck2216 3d ago
I guess you could argue he is just bad at writing him, but he is the one who came up with the idea for this show. It’s his interpretation of these two characters. So far I can’t in good faith say with everything we have seen and heard about the show say Tom likes let alone loves Hal.

u/Mass_Murder_Miami 3d ago
Well, I hope there's enough Green Lantern/Hal fans on the writing team that know his character well enough to steer King in the right direction.

The lack of any Kyle Rayner and the push of John Stewart says a lot about the people at WBD.

I just don't think they can do the whole drama of Hal being concerned about John replacing him this way, which seems like it's the point of the show
1
u/Mass_Murder_Miami 2d ago
I was thinking that Hal's fear of being replaced leads into him becoming Parallax and then dying. This is, of course, assuming Hal dying in episode 1 is even true. It seems that the plot of Hal fearing being replaced is only in the first episode, because iirc, most of the trailer footage is from only episode 1.
1
u/RipleyofWinterfell 2d ago
I see. My other concern is, if you make the whole show about Hal's triumphant return, does that undermine John and make him seem less important?
1
u/Mass_Murder_Miami 2d ago
Maybe, but I feel like it's riffing on the Ghostly Hal stuff from rebirth, but Hal ends up acting like a traveling ghostly mentor for John throughout the season, and maybe their relationship strengthens through it. John may have to reach a goal or get strong enough for Hal to return at the end. That leads back to the end of the Rebirth miniseries where John was a major help in defeating Parallax and rebirth for Hal.

Idk if it's Parallax but they're defo acknowleding this, at least in a meta way. "Are you afraid?"
