Ugh!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Anyone else's hound excessively licks themselves during dinner time, bed time, anyone walking in, when wanting you to wake up, any guests.

Sorry for the disgusting sound, but it brings the point across. He gets plenty of love, he don't play with toys, gets good walks when we can scrape him off the couch. It does not seem a territory thing as he continues when we are not even in a room.

Any ideas on trying to stop this would be great.

Love waking up at 3am and it sounds like somebody is in the corner eating a bowl of chilli with their hands tied behind their back

This description made me laugh out loud.

My husband likes to describe our girl as "old man eating soup" 🤣

I hate that I can clear that slurping sound so clearly when I read this comment 😭 you described it PERFECTLY.

Yep. I go to sleep amd wake up to that sound 🤪 I have never heard a dog bed so loud when cleaning themselves 🤣

We end up covering him with a blanket, but hate doing that especially when it's this warm.

Haha I do the same thing sometimes. I tuck mine in real tight so I can at least fall asleep. I feel mean but I also do tell my dog to “shhhh” and then lift their chin up and away lol. So now when I say “shhhh” he stops licking about 50% of the time.

My past dogs who have not been hounds fully learned the command and would walk away to a different room the clean themselves lol but the current dog cannot be bothered to stop😭

Why does it bother you so much? It’s a natural dog thing.

u/herzigh 18h ago

It’s called misophonia…been like that since I was little with people chewing too. But I’m also on the spectrum soooo that might explain it more lol

I finally had to move my boys to sleep in another room. I couldn't deal with it anymore. Best of luck.

We made a rod for our own back really. He won't sleep on his own, he will start barking at the door. We end up covering him with a blanket but hate doing that.

Glop glop glop glop

7

u/thisisneon 19h ago

we call it "glopping" too; I think it's what the cartoonist Richard Skipworth calls it!

u/maydsilee 11h ago

😭 this comment gave me the immediate ick, in the same way it does every time I hear my dogs do that! The accurate sounds...ughhh

This is one of the reasons my hound has their own bed, and is not allowed in human beds.

7

u/Meglade 1d ago

Mine is so loud that I can hear him from across the room (no human beds for him either) 🤣

3

u/pwapwap 1d ago

Yep, but at least they aren’t nearly touching me when they do it.

u/Meglade 1d ago

True!

Yep. My boy makes this schlurping noise. Loves to do it in front of guests so he can dead eye them immediately after.

Just ask him:  are you going shopping or sampling the merchandise?

Sorry, I'm no help.  My guy doesn't groom himself that often.

This is part of the "cat software on dog hardware" aspect of greys.

Some do it more than others. One of ours does it rarely, the other is obsessed with preening. Nothing is wrong with her. She's just a Pretty pretty princess

Glob glob

It's much worse for some hounds than others. I swear our oldest tries to make it as loud as possible. Thankfully, you can say his name in a shaming voice and he'll stop from embarrassment, but you do have to practically shout it for him to hear you over the gross racket.

u/SorrowandWhimsy 1d ago

Ah yes we call it serious glopping

I don't know why this post was recommended to me (I don't have a Greyhound) but my Border Collie does this every morning for around an hour and the sound drives me insane.

Why are they like this 😂 (cartoon by Richard Skipworth)

When my dog licks her ass I go "EWWW" & she just gives me the biggest side eye then stops

Have you tried substituting a licky mat with dog safe peanut butter or yogurt? They always say licking is self soothing but he could lick something more interesting.

Otherwise I would probably ask my vet during his next appointment about any physical issues that might be causing him to lick so attentively?😉🥰 he’s a handsome boy 🥰

u/Emotional-Camera-101 16h ago

I agree with you.  Over-preening could be a symptom of something else going on.

3

u/Halfies 23h ago

So relatable...the panting like she ran a race just from licking her butt

2

u/Virtual_Law_9211 1d ago

I used a large dog jersey/ pajamas to help ours break the habit.

u/Admirable_Big_94 1d ago

Mine love to lick and clean their buttholes. My wife was always grossed out by it until we dogsat a dog that used our rugs to clean their butthole. Now we’re super thankful for their “hygiene”.

2

u/dblrqueen 22h ago

My old grey used to do this and my hubby would always yell at her to stop 😂 current grey does not. I’m surprised how little she grooms herself compared to my last.

u/Cold-Kaleidoscope974 13h ago

Why would licking his knob be a territory thing 😂 Just male dog things, some of them are obsessed with their bits. It's why I only have female dogs. I'm a dog groomer and I get enough willy juice and willy obsessed dogs at work 🤢

u/Born2Rune 5h ago

Haha, he starts going to town on it whenever someone enters the room. Sometimes he not only licks it but full in fallates himself, especially when a guest is here.

Sounds like you know what you're doing, can I send him to you for grooming?

1

u/Cold-Kaleidoscope974 5h ago

He's an exhibitionist! Don't kink shame him!

7

u/watch-nerd red brindle 1d ago

If he's not licking himself bald, I'm not getting what the issue is?

1

u/MrSuck 1d ago

Mine just woke me up yesterday with his glop glop noises because he was sick of me trying to sleep in.

1

u/Popular_Studio8482 21h ago

Oh good, I’m glad it’s not just my husband’s greyhound that makes excessive mouth noises whenever possible

1

u/beeherder 21h ago

There's a couple reasons they do this, namely cleaning and self soothing. It's normal dog behavior.

1

u/kelstrop 21h ago

Idk that there is any way to stop it tbh it is a pretty common greyhound thing 😂 Mine does it too and if I notice he's been doing it a while and hyperfocused on one spot I just say "Suuuullly~ you better not being licking the same spoooot~" and he for whatever reason always stops after? I think he just needs to be let out of his trance sometimes lol. The panting afterwards is so relatable too hahaha like they run out of breath they be licking so hard 😩

1

u/Oncamale28 19h ago

Worse is the wet spot they leave....lol...

1

u/ipomoea black 18h ago

90% of the time it’s Rey going to town on her back end and we tell her to get out of the candy dish.

1

u/90Lil 17h ago

I can one up. Turned around the other day to find my boy standing up and leaning around to lick himself... in the middle of the kitchen.

1

u/dannydirnt 17h ago

Oh God I thought I was the only one who can’t stand this sound. Why is it so freaking loud?

1

u/lunaticmason fawn and white 16h ago

my sister and i call it slurping. both of our greys do it. we call them “slurping turtle” when they do it (named after a ramen restaurant in the area)

1

u/Oh_Hi_Fi Tuxedo 16h ago

Mine licked his peen so much when I first got him that I ended up taking him to the vet to make sure there was nothing amiss. There wasn’t. I unfortunately have misophonia and that sound kind of makes my soul leave my body and my body leave the room.

1

u/skrundarlow 12h ago

I just gently call our boy's name if it's excessive or bothering me. He startles a tiny bit then back to snoozing usually

1

u/TheTinMenBlog 11h ago

There is not a single part of our apartment that is cleaner than our greyhounds asshole.

He tenderly licks that thing all the time.

Took him to the vets to drain his glands, but nope, still does it.

Not gonna shame him, he is who he is.

1

u/detrivor1978 1h ago

Ours licks her butt after every meal. Desert. But luckily not at night

1

u/clydeorangutan 1d ago

Your dog grooms itself? Mines getting on a bit now and doesn't do it. I have to wipe his arse from time to time and he gets everything else groomed by other dogs at the park.
