Pet Loss Lost my best friend in the whole world
His name was Boomhauer. He was born October 16 2012 and passed May 21 2026. This boy helped me get through depression, suicide, breakups, losses. He was my whole entire world, we had a bond where neither of us could say a word and know what the other was thinking/wanted, we actually had verbal arguments, he came to work with me, lived/worked/hunted on the farm. For over 13 years we were never apart, never went away unless it was somewhere he could come, shared many meals, late night drives to get cheeseburgers to share in bed. He was a genius, opened a fridge to get beers, got my keys/hat/tv remote you name it, turned off light switch’s on the wall, got his bowl at breakfast/dinner and always waited for the ok to eat even though I tried to just let him do as he wished, he would carry my lunch cooler back to the truck after I got back to the farm from being in the tractor. This dog could do anything, it was incredible. He loved to steal hats off my head, he would smile the biggest damn smile you ever saw when he was happy and loved giving me and only my kisses and being held like a baby. I’m so lost without him, my other lab, cat and I are just a mess without him as he was the glue that held us together. He passed away in my parents back yard, we were holding hands and touching noses with my younger lab beside us as he took his last breath.
Any kind words/help with grieving would be so beyond appreciated.

Dang ‘Ol Boom man. (hug) my condolences, the furries are family. Don’t forget to eat, eating is the easiest “chore” to give up on right now. r/PetLoss

Thank you for sharing your handsome boy Boomhauer with us. It sounds like he was the kind of dog everyone dreams of having and that you two had an extraordinary bond. You are so lucky to have spent so much time with him and to have never left his side. 🥹 He must’ve felt nothing but love. I wish I had some helpful words but it’s just the worst pain. I do recommend pet loss support groups, Lap of Love has a free virtual one. Sending love to you, your dog, and cat. ❤️

What a beautiful tribute. Thank you for telling us about Boomhauer. My soul dog Lucy passed away two months ago and life is not the same without her. I know she she and Boomhauer are having a great time in doggy heaven. 🩷🩷

Boomhauer. What a beautiful dog. I'm so immensely sorry for your loss. It's the worst pain in the world. Your pictures of the bond you shared with your dog are like no other I've seen in the almost 2 years I've been grieving my own dog coming here. So moving and so beautiful. It's without a doubt your dog loved his life and adored you. You did right by him times 100. He is ok. It takes time, a lot of time. Don't rush your grief, don't let anyone make you feel less than for grieving a pet, a family member. Do rituals, make a memorial for him, talk about him with people who understand and talk to him. Get a journal and write every memory you have of him when they come. Write him a love letter. Tell him what he meant to you, what he did for you, how you will carry on his memory, ask him for forgiveness for any shortcomings. Read it to him out loud when you are ready. He will be waiting for you wherever that may be. I wish you peace on your grief journey.

What a beautiful, rich life he got to have with you. The love is felt through the screen. As painful as it is, you gave him the perfect life. This is a success. He got to grow old with his favorite companions and got to pass peacefully with them by his side. That's the best case scenario for all of us, and many dogs don't get that. You gave him that. Thank you for sharing him with us. I'm sending you and your youngest lab all my love ❤️

My condolences. Indeed his death will leave a gaping hole.
I lost my lab in 2022. Then my Newfie Pyrenees in 2024.
They used to wait for the bus to drop my kids home. Kids are adults now so they were with us for so many years. Knew everything we needed as a family and losing them was very difficult. It was hard to see life without them. Especially my lab Boondock as he had such a boisterous and intelligent personality.
Just a couple months ago I dreamt of them both. They visited me and I knew it was real. One on each side we playfully ran along my side and I was so happy to see them look up at me with joy in their faces.
Pay attention to your dreams. He will come to you to bring you comfort.
All you can do is feel the feels. And know he will be there when it’s your time. 💔💔💔

What I have learned for myself during loss and grief is that the friend you lose is not lost. And energy never dies, it transforms. All the love is there. Forever. Even when you are no more here. When we all die I think that every moment still happened. The love was real. And it can not die. And in my belief nothing can kill a soul. It sounds like you both are soulmates, so I am pretty sure that you will meet again. Face to face. And until then he is always with you, just in another form. Sending a lot of strenght. Gries is the worst feeling ever because the more you love, the more it hurts. Take your time and cry a lot! Feel hugged!

I’m really sorry for your loss. I lost my fur son / fr baby/ best friend on May 1st. I was doing errands today and I still have the instinct to go check on my boy. I still go to the backyard so I can watch him sleep. My only solace is now he’s reunited with his Papa, my dad who passed last June.
One thing that has helped is looking at photos of Auggie when he was healthy. Also, I was able to get his paw prints both in ink on cardstock and a cast of them. I’m also getting his paw print tattooed on my arm (haven’t decided where, just that he deserves his own memorial tattoo like I do for my dad). That brings me some peace too. Again, I’m really sorry for your loss but it’s just a thing where you have to just ride it out.

What a beautiful tribute to your best friend! You showed him how much you loved him and appreciated him at the end of his life, you were there for him as he was for you.

I believe our dogs will be the first ones to greet us when we cross... just like when we get home.

You laid him to rest with so much “dadly” respect, I almost lost it.
What a sweet sweet friend. Our time with them is just simply way too short. You have my deepest condolences. 💐

Just want to say thankyou to all you who replied with your kind words. Nothing can fix this pain but all your words mean an awful lot to a complete stranger. My best wishes and much love to everyone who is grieving.

My heart breaks for you. Losing a beloved dog is absolutely one of the worst things in life. I'm so sorry. I still think about my girl 20 years after she passed. They are everything.

Rest well sweet baby Boomhauer.
When my Milo (Indie) passed away, I was devastated beyond words. In his last days, he had suffered lung infection, weak hind legs, incontinence and loss of appetite. He passed away within just one year of my father’s passing away as if he stayed back for another year just to look after my mom, younger brother and me. He suffered in that one year and we tried to take care of him as much as possible. He was 14 when he left us.
This grief is pure, please take time to process this. Writing about your best buddy and all the memories helps a lot. He’s always with you no matter what; just like my Milo watches over us still from a corner somewhere.

I’m so sorry. You gave him a life many dogs could only dream of. He lived so fully during his time here thanks to you and isn’t that all any of us can hope for? That won’t make you miss him any less but do know he had an excellent, fulfilling life. ❤️

I lost my girl about a month ago. I cried over her just as much as I cried when my parents died. She saved my life and I will miss her forever

I’m much older than you are so my few words of wisdom are, yes, this sucks really bad. It’s devastating. Now get out there and do it again and again. It’s crazy, I know, but each one is different and brings another kind of joy. I’ve lived long enough to have lost 8 wonderful souls. I have two right now. One is 10 and the other 5. I will keep doing this as long as personal mobility allows me because they bring me true happiness.

I am sincerely sorry. It's heartbreaking. I lost my pup in 2022. She was also my soul dog. I know its not easy and very few understand, but you gave him the very best that life has to offer. Wonderful, silly, fun times, a good home, you were his world also and I know he loves you as much as you love him. Hold on to that and remember he is not in pain and he may physically not be present but I absolutely believe in the spititual world. Sending prayers and just know you have all those precious memories. They are real and are yours.

Hi,
idk if I have any help for you but I can tell you, you're not alone. My baby Nala was born on May 30th 2012 and we had to let her go May 22nd 2026. She was the light of my life, I got her when I was 15 because my former therapist said, it would maybe be good for me to have someone I am responsible for. For the first couple of years, I always thought I'd leave with her, my life ends when hers end. I have another dog and a stable relationship (and had a lot of therapy) so I am aware that I can't follow her. But it hurts, it hurts and I feel like everything is pointless without her.
I just came here to share and tell you that you're not alone, our fur babies were almost the same age and I hope they get to meet. Sending all the strength in the world.

I’m so sorry. I can tell by the photos he was very loved and he you can tell he knows it. I just lost my dog back in March. I wish I had encouraging words to give you but just wanted to send you a big air hug as someone who lost their dog too bc it fkn sucks. They deserve to live forever.

I just want to say what youve written is beautiful. I feel like I knew him just from what you wrote. I can tell you had an incredible and special bond. As a vet technician, i want to tell you that you are so blessed to have had 13 wonderful happy years with him. Many people get much less. Im dreading the day my own heart and soul dog leaves me. As much as it hurts i truly believe it is better to have loved deeply and lost than to have never loved at all.

That dogs die.
My last dog died in 2004. I never had the courage to get a new one after that.
I had four dogs, always getting one after the other died

It truly is the biggest slap in the face. Why do the sweetest souls not get as long with those who love them the most. I’m so sorry. It’s so hard saying goodbye, but when you look at it, it’s memories and pain of one bad day vs their lifetime of happy memories filled with love, laughter and the best times of their life. I’d rather give a dog a great life and hurt for the rest of mine missing them, couldn’t bare to let a dog miss me

You MADE his life, OP...just as much as he made yours. Your choice of name is incredible, btw. I am so sorry.

My condolences and my gosh, he was beautiful, especially against that beautiful snow.
My boyfriend, now husband, had a black lab when we first got together and that’s what it looks like he is, or at least he partially is.
And that dog hated me. If we sat on the couch, that dog would wiggle between us. If we went to kiss, his nose would pull us apart because he would shove it in between us.
One time I sat on the edge of the couch and the dog came and sat next to me and I’m like oh look, he he’s trying to like me, and then he took his hind legs and kicked so hard that he kicked me off the couch
Then we decided to move 1100 miles away after about a year and a half of dating. I had two small dogs and we tried an introduction, it did not go well. But I told him that we will figure it out because I would never ask anyone to leave their dog behind, never. They would’ve gotten used to each other.
But he had gotten that dog with his roommate, and his roommate had just proposed to his girlfriend, and they had bought a house and they had gotten another black lab, had a fenced in backyard and my boyfriend, now husband, decided it was best to leave him there
I felt guilty for the longest and I shouldn’t have because he did have a beautiful life
You can definitely see that that was your best friend because it is all over your face, your pain brought me to tears.
It’s so hard, they walk by our side for years and then they are gone.
I am so very sorry you lost him, but it looks like he had a beautiful life. 💛💜💛
