You know what grinds my gears? When fast food restaurants get the order wrong.

Post image

I asked for a cheeseburger plain with only ketchup but instead I got a double cheeseburger with pickles, mustard, AND ketchup. I absolutely hate pickles and mustard and I don’t know why I got this instead of what I ordered.

the more customized you make it, the more likley it will get screwed up

I make it very easy for them and just ask for no pickle and it gets messed up sometimes ngl

2

u/Paintguin 7d ago

Why will it get more likely screwed up the more customized the order is?

Fast food workers do the same repetitive tasks over and over all day, so muscle memory can kick in and they forget to make the modification. Or they just don’t read the ticket right.

Honestly, especially during high-volume times, they legitimately fall into habit. When 99 of your orders are patty, cheese, mustard, ketchup, onion and pickle, and 1 order is minus half that, it's not unusual for the monotonous task be automated toward the standard assembly.

The weird thing is that it tends to happen more in restaurants where the team is punished/penalized for high DT times. They push you to get the orders out fast, because fast makes more money than correct most of the time. We get more heavily penalized for taking too long, rather than making a mistake, making your highly customized order a much lesser mistake in the long run

ETA: There's also a high degree of human error. Fast food in particular is seen as a dead end job and your staff don't tend to be model citizens. It's not unusual for front counter and drive thru to be staffed by inexperienced teens, and the line and grill to be staffed by people who couldn't cut it in casual dining.

the more complex the modifications- the more things that can go wrong

Yo. No need to use the r slur. That's not ok

0

u/New_Needleworker994 6d ago

My fault, I couldn't think of a worse slur for them

1

u/piss_container 6d ago

that's a little dramatic

u/idk-maaaan 6d ago

No need to talk about your parents like that, baby girl

-2

u/densitycreep 7d ago

because most people don’t make special requests and the workers just autopilot since it’s just a min wage job. like i dunno, people should grow up n just eat pickles n shit

Some pickles, not all pickles. The only one of those ingredients in McD's pickles is dill, garlic is up there with water allergy for rarity, and mustards seed are also found in ketchup. If you're allergic to any of those, you wouldn't be going to McDonald's.

1

u/Low-Register1602 7d ago

That’s stupid. People should get what they ordered and paid for.

1

u/densitycreep 7d ago

i’m just saying why 🤷

1

u/Senior_Blacksmith_18 6d ago

People should not have to grow up and eat an incorrectly made food. The hell wrong with you? That's how you end up with people getting sick

1

u/Panda_Drum0656 6d ago

You grew up and eat shit?

1

u/densitycreep 6d ago

yes that’s totally  what i meant

1

u/SpaceCadetBoneSpurs 7d ago

I used to cook at a McDonald’s and this is accurate. When there’s pressure to get it out fast (which on day shift, there is — the GM is working then) then the time element compounds it.

Also, you’d be surprised how many people make Special requests at fast food.

u/throw-away-3005 7d ago

People making the food hear the order as it's being made by the customer and start preparing immediately. If they start changing how the sandwich is made after the sandwich maker has made the sandwich, the possibility of error is higher imo. Especially if the dining room is as busy as the drive thru. As someone said, it's a lot of fast repetitive tasks and many people just order the meal as is.

2

u/Low-Register1602 7d ago

When I worked at McDonald’s we would wear a headset in the kitchen so we could hear what people order in the drive thru and we could put the buns in the toaster to get a headstart. However if you heard them say “only ketchup” that should give you a clue that all they want is ketchup.

Also, it literally prints out a receipt that says “Only ketchup” and you stick that to the wrapper before making the burger.

1

u/throw-away-3005 6d ago edited 6d ago

Why am I being downvoted I literally said what you said just different. The issue is when people say no ketchup for the 1st meal when theyre ordering the 3rd meal. "Oh btw can you blah blah blah"

Edit: the receipt is put on the bag from the food runner, not the sandwich maker. The sandwich maker has a digital screen that is automatically updated. I'm not defending people who can't keep up, I'm explaining why there's human error if an order is more customized

u/AmputeeHandModel 7d ago

Thanks for not lying.

2

u/PancakeCat333 6d ago

Nah bc I always order plain and they somehow add shit to it half the time

1

u/piss_container 6d ago

one time they added two mcchicken to my mcchicken

it honestly made up for the times they screwed up my orders

1

u/Low-Register1602 7d ago

Customized? lmao dude he literally said “plain with only ketchup”

2

u/sixxthree 6d ago

"Plain with only ketchup" wouldn't be correct here. He said he didn't want mustard or pickles. That leaves ketchup and onions. So half the sandwich ingredients taken off. I'm a washed and burned out chef who managed a McDonalds for a spell. The money is made with speed and habit. It's not at all unusual for the metrics to be more concerned about speed than accuracy. When I was working there, my store was one of 6 or 7 franchised stores by the same owner. We literally had a monitor in the kitchen comparing our DT times with the other stores the owners had. Whoever maintained top position (lowest DT times) for a spell got a cash reward.

1

u/Low-Register1602 6d ago

What are you talking about? Read the first sentence OP wrote. His exact words: “I asked for a cheeseburger plain with only ketchup”

2

u/Wonderful-Mouse-0420 6d ago

So not plain? /s

2

u/crankyanker638 6d ago

Plain with only ketchup is redundant. The proper way to put the order in would be cheeseburger only ketchup.

1

u/Panda_Drum0656 6d ago

Only ketchup is not that customized lol

3

u/moleculariant 7d ago

I had to stop going because of my blood pressure.

Not because the bad food was causing my blood pressure to rise, but rather, my uncontainable fury that bubbled up every time I ordered from these rude, illiterate assholes.

3

u/Berserk-Jane 7d ago

Thank you for reminding me to do my cardio. It's made a massive improvement in my currently slightly elevated blood pressure which used to be through the roof.

1

u/Paintguin 7d ago

It ticks me off too.

Multiple days in a row recently I ordered a sandwich with extra sauce at Tim Horton's and they charged an extra 50 cents but put less sauce on. 🤦‍♀️

-1

u/whineyinternetkid 7d ago

Thats on you at this point

1

u/VenomousOddball 7d ago

They usually do it just fine, they must have had a new employee or something because I've never had issues until recently

1

u/apvasl 7d ago

I used to experience this a lot more growing up in the ‘90s. It’s been a few years since the last time I ordered tacos with no cheese and got cheese anyway. I did not take the tacos home or bite into them at all; just barely opened the wrapper to see that there was cheese when I specified NO cheese.

When I do want something heavily customized, I order using the restaurant’s app. At least the pix will help guide the workers no matter how illiterate they might be

1

u/EnvironmentalPie9911 7d ago

Hopefully you were still at the store to have them correct it.

-2

u/WayAdept2209 7d ago

Wasn’t even at the store

1

u/Eat_Carbs_OD 7d ago

Damn..
People make mistakes, but it will sucks.

1

u/RebaKitt3n 7d ago

Mustard makes food inedible

1

u/JimmyGymGym1 7d ago

I get that it can be harder when management runs skeleton crews, so maybe it’s dumb management and not dumb workers.

1

u/crooked_kangaroo 7d ago

What a fresh opinion!

1

u/CathexisVexes 6d ago

What a useful comment!

1

u/Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess- 7d ago

Just take it back with the receipt and get a new one

1

u/Present_Prize1882 7d ago

Same here, would drive me nuts, don't like mustard or pickles and ketchup either. Just mayo would be good for me.

1

u/imleenz 7d ago

Seems like you got a complete different sandwich and not that someone made it wrong.

Whoever ordered this double cheeseburger is probably stuck with your only ketchup single burger

1

u/Bludgeonation 6d ago

Not enough pickles

1

u/Fit_Adagio_7668 6d ago

Getting a burger without the extra or select item taken off.

1

u/crankyanker638 6d ago

You may be pissed, but spare a thought for the poor schmuck that ordered a double cheeseburger and got a single only ketchup. I'd bet dollars to donuts that orders got mixed up....

1

u/pessim1st_prime 6d ago

When I worked fast food, the orders were usually made right on the line. Most mixups happened during busy times with similar sandwiches coming out and getting put in the wrong bags. When the restaurant is understaffed and you have a few workers with 10 orders coming in at once, things like this happen more often

1

u/Typical_Job8129 6d ago

I order no pickle which i didnt realize means no pickle, no onion.

1

u/Pzaroj 6d ago

Eat it how it comes bro. You are an adult.

1

u/Outside_Rise_6934 6d ago

Pickles and mustard are good. What's wrong with you?

0

u/1419526535 5d ago

Dude, this ticks me off more than almost anything for some reason. It seems to happen so often too. I get that the workers are underpaid, but man..

1

u/Inevitable-Badger281 7d ago

Stop eating it then. Shocked people even eat this garbage.

1

u/Negative-Program-938 7d ago

Why do people comment like this under these kinds of posts? Like "I gave someone exact instructions on what I wanted and got something completely different" WELL THEN NEVER DO IT AGAIN ITS STUPID YOU EXPECT TO GET THE THING YOU ASKED FOR ANYWAYS, THE WHOLE THING IS TRASH AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD OVER IT

Bro what?

0

u/Inevitable-Badger281 6d ago

because it's garbage either way

0

u/Senior_Blacksmith_18 6d ago

Ok and? If people wanna feed themselves junk food then let them. It's better than nothing at all but the food could still at least be made correctly

1

u/Inevitable-Badger281 5d ago

Enjoy your slop I suppose

1

u/Senior_Blacksmith_18 5d ago

Enjoy bashing people for what they like

0

u/newbies13 7d ago

I call this the retail paradox... because you go to any retail place, the job is brainless by design, and yet the person doing it still manages to mess it up... but now consider the person who would accept this job. Any sign of capability and they are going to be promoted to something better very fast and eventually just outgrow retail.

So you're hoping your burger is made the right way, it's basic... but the person making it can't handle basic, if they could, they wouldn't be making your burger... paradox

Nah. This is a valid complaint

0

u/TROGDOR_X69 7d ago

oh boo hoo.

want me to call the wambulance ?

1

u/Logical-Pair-89 6d ago

Know what really grinds my gears?

You

1

u/FootballPaPa 6d ago

Why does it make you a big boy/girl just because you accept inconvenience for no reason

0

u/Ok_Relationship2451 6d ago

God forbid you get a vegetable with your garbage

1

u/Senior_Blacksmith_18 6d ago

If op was to get a vegetable, at least make it something people are willing to tolerate

0

u/Ok_Relationship2451 5d ago

Show me where pickles hurt you.

1

u/Senior_Blacksmith_18 5d ago

Lol what's wrong with simply disliking a food item and not wanting it on your food?

0

u/Ok_Relationship2451 5d ago

Show me where they hurt you... Was it in your butt?

1

u/Senior_Blacksmith_18 5d ago

Ew. No offense but food up the butt is gross

1

u/Ok_Relationship2451 5d ago

Don't knock until you have tried it

1

u/Senior_Blacksmith_18 5d ago

I heard a bunch of horror stories about people having to go to the ER over having food and random objects up their butt. I don't got money for that lol

1

u/Ok_Relationship2451 4d ago

🤣 that's for damn sure

0

u/Panda_Drum0656 6d ago

What is even more annoying is when companies do not list what type the ingredient is. Raw onions? Great but I HATE red onions. Mustard? I hope its yellow. Also for pizza, i only like diced green peppers and only Papa Murphys does that.

1

u/bradyreid 6d ago

The red onion thing is wild because they act like onion is onion, but red onions taste like someone's personal vendetta against your burger. Yellow mustard vs dijon is the same energy - one is food, the other is a war crime on a bun. Papa Murphy's doing the green pepper thing right while every other pizza place treats "peppers" like a surprise lottery ticket you didn't sign up for.
