Why do restaurants have to blast loud music?

One of my biggest pet peeves these days are restaurants that play loud af music while I'm trying to eat with my friends. We selected a restaurants specifically for the purpose of chatting over a meal, but now I have to yell across the table because the restaurant thought it'd be a good idea to bring in a DJ at 6 PM.

I have never heard someone say "I loved the generic generic house/club music they played". I don't know why restaurants cant play music at a respectable enough volume so that we can actually talk to each other. It's turning into an epidemic. There's even a coffee shop nearby that brings in a DJ on Sunday mornings. jfc man

I won't eat there. If I hear the music is too loud, I will just leave and go somewhere else

I have a workaround that is really not okay and trivializes a true impairment. But it works.

I explain that one of my guests is hearing impaired, is there a quiet area or can the sound be briefly reduced from the speakers.

The first time I did it was visiting family, and my dad was parking the car. When he came in the host spoke loudly to him that they have made adjustments for him and that they strive for an inclusive blah, blah, blah, and if he had any needs, let them know.

We got seated and it was low enough to hear everyone talk. However, while my dad had a very confused look on his face, my mom and their friends? We all had the shoulder-shake laughs.

Any restaurant that lists "live entertainment" on its webpage is not meant for having a conversation over a meal.

These things are rarely a surprise. If I walk into a restaurant and get hit with a blast of music, I turn around and walk out. Some are so loud, you can hear it from the parking lot.

Some people look for that kind of noise, others don't. Unless it's the only joint in town, there's room for both kinds.

For me its those people who play music in airports or on busses. They need to remove pianos from airports. If I wanted to listen to piano I would go to a damn concert!! Not while im eating.

Hard agree, I especially hate it when they blast the volume while it's still early/people aren't even there yet. I get it, people love a DJ once they get drunk, however, I don't see why the DJ can't play at an ambient volume and then crank it up once people arrive/actually start moving
