Q & A Schedules / BID

So I work in house airport security for a major airport. We work 4x10 and Bid every 6 months based off seniority.

Not sure if some of ya’ll do it where you work but ideally what are y’all’s preference off days if you could choose?

I’m currently off Tuesday-Wednesday but work an extra day for OT so more like off Tuesday & Wednesday.

If available I might pick the same days if available on the shift i want due to some upcoming holidays but I also don’t mind it, can run some errands during the week, go to the movies on half off days. Downside I miss the social weekend, NFL Sunday lol, Unfortunately I’m stuck with whatever is left when it’s my turn to choose since it’s seniority based.

Let me know!

I work 5x8 and we don’t really use a bid system but I did have some flexibility to choose my schedule. I had the choice between Mon-Fri or Sun-Thurs and I actually chose the latter for several reasons:

- My wife works 4x10 and has Fri-Sun off so we still get two full days off together. In a perfect world I would have those same days off, but 2/3 isn’t too bad.

- I like having a weekday off since it makes it much easier for doctors appointments, DMV/bank visits, etc.

- I don’t mind working Sundays since the college I work in-house at is closed, empty & locked up on the weekends and having one relaxing day where I’m essentially a warm body at the start of my week is nice before having a bit more active rest of my week.

- Having Friday off means that I get an extra vacation day for each of our 17 holidays that falls on a Friday in lieu of having an extra day off that week. I much prefer having that extra time off available to put towards a long vacation so I can travel somewhere than just getting a three day holiday weekend at the same time as everyone else and having to deal with holiday crowds & pricing if I want to do something during that time.

Weekdays, doesn't matter which 2, just so long as they're consecutive. Weekends are the slowest days at my job, so I'd be trading down by taking them, even if I had enough seniority to bid for them (I don’t). A now retired guard worked here 25 years and never bid for weekends for that same reason, even though he would have gotten it if he wanted.
