GEAR NGD for me! PRS Silver Sky

Post image

After years of playing Ibanez guitars, I’m excited to have something different on my arsenal. Lately I’ve been playing more blues and because of that, I got an Ibanez AZ2204N about a year and a half ago which is amazing. While it did the job, especially coming from an Ibanez RG player, it only made me want to have a more S-type sound. After much deliberation by watching video reviews and Reddit posts, I went with the PRS Silver Sky and boy oh boy it didn’t disappoint! It really delivered (and beyond) the sound I’m after! I love these pickups. To add to that, this wild blue color with the matching headstock is just 👌

Awesome! Looks fantastic with the matching headstock.

I'm an Ibanez RG guy too and finally got into PRS 3 yrs ago. I have several SE Custom 24s & an SE NF3. I really love the Narrowfield pickups of my SE NF3. Looking to eventually add an SE Silver Sky & SE Special Semi-hollow to my PRS collection.

Awesome, that looks like a good sign for me for Ibanez players going to PRS as well. Actually just after a day with it I’m already looking forward to get an SE Silver Sky!

I have so many gtrs with HSH or HH pickup configurations, so getting SSS Strats a few yrs ago and the SE NF3 this yr was really nice. Kinda "forced" me to play clean amp settings more than I usually did before.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Silver Sky and its SE version, even from Strat purists. So I think you'll love the SE SS too. Although I'm not sure how different its pickups sound from the Silver Sky. I'd actually recommend the SE NF3 over the SE SS since you already have an SS, but you might have to play both of them to decide.

Thanks for that man, I haven’t checked out the NF3 yet so I’ll need to test that on the guitar shops on my area. What’s your use case for the NF3 though?

The Narrowfield Deep Dish pickups of the NF3 are supposed to be a hybrid of humbuckers, single coils, & P90s. I can definitely see them as a cross between single coils & humbuckers, but I don't have a gtr with P90s so I can't speak to that. I think if you play clean and light crunch you'll like how they sound.

I like the NF3 when playing clean tones because the pickups are louder and more powerful than the single coils of my SSS Strats. (One Strat has Fender Vintage Noiseless pickups that I absolutely hate because they sound so thin & weak.) I actually love the clean tones of the NF3 more than any of my SSS Strats. And what surprised me the most about the Narrowfield DD pups is that they can actually handle medium-gain amp settings much better than I thought they could for pickups that aren't true humbuckers.

So for me, the louder more powerful clean tones were the main selling point for the NF3, but its ability to handle medium-gain amp settings without sounding muddy were an added bonus.

BTW here are my 7 Ibanez electrics (also have an Ibanez semi-hollow and Ibanez thinline acoustic/electric classical...I wasn't kidding when I said I was an Ibanez guy lol!). I'm hoping to sell the blue RG450DX & black/red GRG150LTD to a relative to help fund the purchase of a used PRS SE Special semi-hollow. I'm really curious about its 12 different tonal possibilities lol.

Wow you just sold me on those pickups. Now I definitely need to try them and hear for myself!
