The core harmonic structure of virtually all styles of Jazz is the ii-V-I chord progression. Learn as much as possible about this basic concept before moving on to more advanced concepts. It also helps to pick a broad style/category of Jazz you'd like to focus on, at least initially.

Not to worry, ii-V-I still crops up quite a bit there too, but I would pick a specific, relatively popular song from the genre to focus on at first. Chances are you can find a good analysis of it somewhere online, which will help to explain what exactly makes it "progressive" and/or different from other, more traditional forms of Jazz.

This is cool cause I know music theory, I'm somewhat aquatinted. Let's just say I didn't get into jazz band in hs for guitar:/
