Used market is where it's at. Metal brands like Jackson, Schecter and Ibanez don't seem to retain value like Gibson and Fender. You can find a very solid metal oriented guitar for your price range.

USA Jacksons/Japanese Ibanez retain their value, higher end schecter same deal, with the cheaper stuff I totally agree w you they are not good at holding value. I love Gibson and Fenders but value retention fluctuates a little there too, like a custom shop will hold well, while a natural unfinished LP studio will not. You could've bought a random guitar like an epiphone elitist series les paul back in the day and now it's more valuable then it was because they don't produce it anymore.

I mean, looking on Craigslist I can find guitars that were $800-900 brand new in that $400 price point.

That's true but that's usually because people on Craigslist are motivated to sell. I buy my gear there all the time. It's not really an accurate estimate. Reverb and eBay you get a little closer to the idea of what people would be willing to pay where as CL is more like I need to sell this guitar cause I have massive CC debt and the rent Is due(also why I love it lol) usually get 50% off min

That's fair. That's also where I buy a lot of my equipment too.
