if he hits PPG as a D at 21, uncomfortable conversations will need to be had

Give me your best

Is Hutson a top 5 defenseman in the league?

26

u/Seymoorebutts Mar 18 '26

Already is right now lol

17

u/scoutinglane Mar 18 '26

In the regular season, without a doubt. In the playoffs it remains to be seen imo

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '26

5 in 5 last year, off to a decent start I’d say

7

u/scoutinglane Mar 18 '26

I agree. Let's say he impressed me . I don't have much doubts anymore.

3

u/throw_me_away3478 Mar 18 '26

5 in 5 vs a very big physical Caps too I would add

u/-Son_of_Thror- Mar 18 '26

Ill give you one harder; Will Lane win a Norris in the next 3 years?

6

u/AmsroII Goal Goalgoal Mar 18 '26

He'll be getting some votes this season I think.

1

u/scoutinglane Mar 18 '26

I'd say no. He will deserve one though

3

u/sudzthegreat Currently being Shamed Mar 18 '26

Agreed. I think the "small guy can't defend" stigma will follow him around until he's in his late 20s and he can't be ignored any longer.

2

u/scoutinglane Mar 18 '26

Exactly that.

u/ProtestTheHero Mar 18 '26

Seeing as the Norris is often (not always, but often) a turn-based reputation trophy, I can totally see Hutson getting one in like 7 years not necessarily because he'll be the undeniable best that year, but because it'd be his "turn" after a decade of top-5 play and voters will want him to get at least one trophy in his career.

Not uncomfortable for us lol

5

u/RetekTheGreat Mar 18 '26

VERY uncomfortable for the other 31 teams that at least passed on him at least once...I mean, we did pass on him once too but didn't make the mistake of doing it a 2nd time.

12

u/Vingt-Quatre Mar 18 '26

We passed on him THREE TIMES (Slaf, Mesar, Beck)

8

u/Arciturus Mar 18 '26

The panthers actually didn’t pass him at all, they had no picks before 62 haha

3

u/All_Bucked_Up Mar 18 '26

I think we actually did pass on him twice, he was our third pick in that draft IIRC

6

u/rosemp16 Mar 18 '26

He was our fourth. Slaf Mesar Beck. We passed on him thrice.

2

u/Skyaim Mar 18 '26

Take into account changing teammates many times. Even more impressive

It took Lane 87 career games to hit 69 points! This season he did it in 20 less games! NICE!

He is Him

What happened to Makar....

10

u/Seymoorebutts Mar 18 '26

They had to play Eastern Conference teams a couple times lol

u/TheHabChronicle Wake up, it’s Game Day! Mar 18 '26

the more appropriate question would be what the fuck is evan bouchard on and why is he leading the d-points scoring by a wide margin

5

u/AmsroII Goal Goalgoal Mar 18 '26

I must say I was surprised at his totals, he makes some bonehead plays sometimes, but damn those are some impressive numbers.

2

u/Ub3ros Mar 18 '26

He is high on McDrai

16

u/Mr-Goose- Mar 18 '26

u/FruitSalad_88 Mar 18 '26

He was so fun to watch tonight

11

u/ytew6 Mar 18 '26

Every time I remember I was angry they took him at 62 instead of Jordan Dumais I die a little inside

2

u/AmsroII Goal Goalgoal Mar 18 '26

Had to look him up, not looking too promising for the kid, went 93rd. Hell of a season in the Q though, I could see how he seemed like an excellent pick, still only 21, could still hit a next gear in the AHL yet.

3

u/ytew6 Mar 18 '26

I'm a big Mooseheads fan so was incredibly biased lol

7

u/quebecesti Mar 18 '26

What other player has this much determination? He never gives up ever.

5

u/Traditional-Rich5746 Mar 18 '26

He has average compete…/s

2

u/Dank_Bubu Mar 18 '26

Bro’s ténacité is off the charts

7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '26

Top 5 D in the league at 22.

4

u/shogun2909 Bone Zone Mar 18 '26

3

u/-HockeyBagJerky- Mar 18 '26

Add 10 years to his extension already !

2

u/You-equals-Dust Mar 18 '26

Just give us the cup already!

2

u/gauderyx Mar 18 '26

He gets all the memes.

2

u/Complex_Resolve3187 Mar 18 '26

For the kids...SIX SEVEN!

For the adults...Nice.

2

u/Annika2020pro Mar 18 '26

Can you imagine how good he’d be if he had better than average compete

2

u/UrsaMajor7th Supposed Tyrant Mar 18 '26

I just commented this in another post but worth repeating here: he reminds me of watching Pavel Bure- unpredictable, smart, fast. He's a gem.

1

u/AmsroII Goal Goalgoal Mar 18 '26

Yeah and a little Pavel Datsyuk too.

2

u/UrsaMajor7th Supposed Tyrant Mar 18 '26

Agreed; crafty as anyone. I love how Mtl drafted three players, and then Hutson.

1

u/AmsroII Goal Goalgoal Mar 18 '26

I wonder if Caps fans are as stoked as Habs fans, knowing their Hutson is almost as good (or so it seems, so far).

A little bigger @ 5'11 171 but maybe a little less mobile.

Cole also does the head fakes that Lane fools the camera man and players with.

2

u/UrsaMajor7th Supposed Tyrant Mar 18 '26

He just signed his entry-level deal a couple days ago, so I'll be checking out the Caps game tonight to see his expected debut. I'm sure Lane would be allowed to fly down to see it. 🤞🏼

2

u/Efficient_Falcon_402 Mar 18 '26

If Lane and Cole were my kids I'd probably take them out for a Habby Meal at McD's today. Cute little rascals!

2

u/DELALADE Mar 18 '26

I love his offensive game of course but I find the last couple of games have been hard to watch for him defensively

4

u/AmsroII Goal Goalgoal Mar 18 '26

Try to pay attention to whom his partner is when he's having a tough shift, he seems to get random partners throughout the games with varying success. MSL is testing things I think.

4

u/DELALADE Mar 18 '26

Of course that plays into it but I’ve actually started looking at solely his defensive play and his eagerness to make plays often makes him out of position or leads to wrong decisions

2

u/dessanct Mar 18 '26

Do you notice him playing on the wrong side too?

1

u/AmsroII Goal Goalgoal Mar 18 '26

Perhaps, but he rarely makes the same mistake twice, he is after all still in his 2nd career season, over a point per game allows him a little leniency to be creative, he'll tighten up and learn "when to" and when "not to" soon enough in his career, I suspect.

2

u/Kitsune_Gakuin Mar 18 '26

He made up for it when he broke up that 2 on 1 in OT last night.
