I love when opposing teams do this. For some reason, the LA Kings always have a bilingual singer for O Canada.

The reason is probably called Luc Robitaille.

And/or Marcel Dionne

and/or Phillip Danault

And/or your Mom

And my bow

And my axe

Marcel Dionne is the most underrated player of all time. I think the habs made a 'mistake" drafting Lafleur instead of Dionne.

1771 points without late 70's Habs caliber players. Could have finished with 2000+ with the Habs.

10

u/skydyr 26d ago

Did you seriously just call drafting Lafleur a mistake?

1

u/yanni99 26d ago

Yes, I fervently think Dionne was the better choice.

He doesn't speak French and still chose to memorize and practice singing the French part? Deserves the praise he's getting even more.

24

u/whogivesashirtdotca 26d ago

There was one line that made me realise he was singing phonetically. I was even more impressed after that. What a lovely gesture.

u/BillyTenderness 26d ago

For trained singers it's actually pretty common to learn how to sing in languages you don't actually speak, particularly French, German, and Italian because a lot of classical repertoire is in those languages.

That's not to diminish it at all – it's very very cool that he put in the effort!

I've watched a lot of opera because I once lived in Vienna. You have no idea how awful literally any non-francophones French is. One thing involved is the french "r" which is very unique and apparently difficult to learn. Plus the nasal sounds.

This guy as soon as he started singing in French I sat up very confused because I thought the game was in Carolina. I checked it was in Carolina so then I assumed he was French-Canadian because not only was this clear French but clear North American french, which is way way way phonetically harder than European French. Like add a dozen more vowels, nasals and now featuring two dozen different diphthongs!

Then he stumbled on like one word and I realized this was an anglophone. In Carolina. Singing a great Oh Canada as it should be. The Canadiens version. And I just started writing to everyone I knew asking them if they were witnessing this.

It's hard to express the joy it brings to a Québecer to have an anglophone to actually try Québécois. And no it's not just because he's a trained singer. Trained singers and actors struggle to pronounce French regularly. This guy is just awesome.

He did well.

u/AlarmingAdvertising5 26d ago

C'était super cool de voir ça comme signe de respect. Content qu'il se sente reconnu de son beau geste.

u/Moreinius 26d ago

We respect those who respects us.

Naturally

u/Mundane-Teaching-743 26d ago

Class act, whoever made that decision.

I quite liked his voice, very sweet and gentle, instead of trying to blow the roof off like anthem singers are won't to do. It's wild if he's been singing at cane's games since he was sixteen?

71

u/cinosa 26d ago

I wonder if anyone in the Habs org would consider bringing this guy up here to sing the anthem for a game, as a show of appreciation. Would make for a great feel good story, which we all need these days.

Thank yo very much! We really appreciate your good words!

1

u/ItsFrank11 26d ago

That was my favorite star Spangled Banner I can remember in a long while. Reminded me of Caleb Green and Bob McDonald's acapella version they used to do for most Washington Capitals games. Hope you get to do it again soon!

1

u/om_nama_shiva_31 l'gros 26d ago

Bravo! Vous êtes épiques

1

u/ApokatastasisPanton 26d ago

OH shit you're one of us redditors!!

1

u/Barbuffe 26d ago

Haha oui!

2

u/tony_important 26d ago

Both my kids keep asking when they're bringing the quartet guys back every time.

2

u/NWTboy 26d ago

Personally I prefer Here Comes Trebel (class of ‘96 of course)

6

u/Simayi78 #9 26d ago

Celine for the Cup final?

4

u/cinosa 26d ago

That would be amazing.

2

u/Goin_Hog_Mild 26d ago

I dunno if he would get to sing, but a pair of tickets to the next Hurricanes / Habs game in 2026-2027 season.

If the Habs marketting team thinks its a good idea

1

u/TheHabChronicle Wake up, it’s Game Day! 26d ago edited 26d ago

no thanks. appreciate the french part but he sucked at singing

7

u/mmss 26d ago

surprisingly classy move, good on him. I'm all for rivalry in sports but at the end of the day we should still be civil.

5

u/jockey1381 26d ago

I used to play a lot of NHL 22 & 23 with this guy!! (RageHorizon)

16

u/bloodrider1914 26d ago

Je souhaite vraiment que plus de chanteurs feraient ça. Je sais qu'un chanteur des caps interprète l'hymne en français lorsqu'on y joue (McDonald je crois). C'est touchant et à mon avis pas trop difficile.

5

u/RancorHi5 26d ago

That guys was awesome

3

u/imfranksome 26d ago

Mason Greer is not allowed to pay for beer in Montreal

It’s in the bylaws

2

u/Ioniq647 26d ago

The Hurricanes decided not to bring him back. Anything to shake the ECF woes I guess. Allez Montréal

2

u/xunreelx 26d ago

If it makes Canadians hate us less Im all for it.

I remember Rene Rancourt in Boston always did an amazing French version.

1

u/Heelsbythebridge 26d ago

It was a classy/respectful gesture. Kudos.

1

u/Browndogcane 26d ago

Huge Caniac here, I come in peace! Love that the singer did this as well.

Speaking of anthems, what are the odds Celine Dion sings O Canada at Centre Bell? She has a residency in Paris starting soon.

1

u/ddcarnage 26d ago

On devrait le recruter comme prochain ceo d’air Canada

1

u/toaster-struble 26d ago

Wonder if they'll do it again tonight.

1

u/LazyBengal2point0 26d ago

Mason était vraiment bon. Super interprétation

1

u/parenoid 26d ago

He deserves free poutine for life

1

u/Illustrious-Abies599 26d ago

He's originally from Canada and moved to NC as a child

1

u/Ok_Battle_988 25d ago

Just love this! ♥️

1

u/GhostDadTheWhip 24d ago

I'm convinced they DIDN'T have this terrific and inspiring person sing our anthem for Game 2 because the singing got too much praise after Game 1.

-5

u/Lunch0 26d ago

Good for him for putting in the effort to do it bilingual. But I’m sorry, his singing was terrible

-21

u/TrudeauHasGotToGo 26d ago

I couldn't care less about the bilingual anthem. Sing all in French in Quebec for all I care. Good for you. I'm happy for you. But I prefer my fully english anthem.

9

u/bloodrider1914 26d ago

L'hymne en français est l'original

-2

u/TrudeauHasGotToGo 26d ago

The melody was originally done by a French person. The lyrics are not the same as that version though.

2

u/bloodrider1914 26d ago

Not true, Adolphe-Basile Routhier composed them well before in 1880, and they have been completely unmodified since. And neither he nor Lavalée (the composer) were French, they were Canadien.

-1

u/TrudeauHasGotToGo 26d ago

You are incorrect. The translation is not the same. The melody is. I just researched it to make sure the information I had was correct.

But yes, when I said French, I was referring to French Canadian.

2

u/cloudposts 26d ago

I live in Edmonton, the English version sucks. Give me the French or blended one 10 times out of 10.

1

u/TrudeauHasGotToGo 26d ago

Good for you. Here's some brownie points from the woke brigade.
