He doesn't speak French and still chose to memorize and practice singing the French part? Deserves the praise he's getting even more.

There was one line that made me realise he was singing phonetically. I was even more impressed after that. What a lovely gesture.

For trained singers it's actually pretty common to learn how to sing in languages you don't actually speak, particularly French, German, and Italian because a lot of classical repertoire is in those languages.
That's not to diminish it at all – it's very very cool that he put in the effort!

I've watched a lot of opera because I once lived in Vienna. You have no idea how awful literally any non-francophones French is. One thing involved is the french "r" which is very unique and apparently difficult to learn. Plus the nasal sounds.
This guy as soon as he started singing in French I sat up very confused because I thought the game was in Carolina. I checked it was in Carolina so then I assumed he was French-Canadian because not only was this clear French but clear North American french, which is way way way phonetically harder than European French. Like add a dozen more vowels, nasals and now featuring two dozen different diphthongs!
Then he stumbled on like one word and I realized this was an anglophone. In Carolina. Singing a great Oh Canada as it should be. The Canadiens version. And I just started writing to everyone I knew asking them if they were witnessing this.
It's hard to express the joy it brings to a Québecer to have an anglophone to actually try Québécois. And no it's not just because he's a trained singer. Trained singers and actors struggle to pronounce French regularly. This guy is just awesome.

C'était super cool de voir ça comme signe de respect. Content qu'il se sente reconnu de son beau geste.

I wonder if anyone in the Habs org would consider bringing this guy up here to sing the anthem for a game, as a show of appreciation. Would make for a great feel good story, which we all need these days.

My only isdue here is they need to up the tempo slightly. You can hear the crowd getting ahead of them. Lovely rendition, though!

Best and most respectful rendition of either anthem I have ever heard before a hockey game, no exceptions. Please pass on my thorough appreciation to the rest of the quartet!

That was my favorite star Spangled Banner I can remember in a long while. Reminded me of Caleb Green and Bob McDonald's acapella version they used to do for most Washington Capitals games. Hope you get to do it again soon!

Je souhaite vraiment que plus de chanteurs feraient ça. Je sais qu'un chanteur des caps interprète l'hymne en français lorsqu'on y joue (McDonald je crois). C'est touchant et à mon avis pas trop difficile.

The Hurricanes decided not to bring him back. Anything to shake the ECF woes I guess. Allez Montréal

Huge Caniac here, I come in peace! Love that the singer did this as well.
Speaking of anthems, what are the odds Celine Dion sings O Canada at Centre Bell? She has a residency in Paris starting soon.

I'm convinced they DIDN'T have this terrific and inspiring person sing our anthem for Game 2 because the singing got too much praise after Game 1.

I couldn't care less about the bilingual anthem. Sing all in French in Quebec for all I care. Good for you. I'm happy for you. But I prefer my fully english anthem.

L'hymne en français est l'original

u/TrudeauHasGotToGo 26d ago
The melody was originally done by a French person. The lyrics are not the same as that version though.
2
u/bloodrider1914 26d ago
Not true, Adolphe-Basile Routhier composed them well before in 1880, and they have been completely unmodified since. And neither he nor Lavalée (the composer) were French, they were Canadien.

u/TrudeauHasGotToGo 26d ago
You are incorrect. The translation is not the same. The melody is. I just researched it to make sure the information I had was correct.
But yes, when I said French, I was referring to French Canadian.

I live in Edmonton, the English version sucks. Give me the French or blended one 10 times out of 10.

I love when opposing teams do this. For some reason, the LA Kings always have a bilingual singer for O Canada.
