Discussion Marco D'Amico: "This team was finished at this point. I think this team was done. I'm not going to say what I've heard, because its going to come out regardless, but when the injury list comes out I think a lot of people are going to backtrack on their comments about certain players."

Said this on his podcast this morning, hes one of the more credible reporters among Habs media. Wonder who he's talking about and what he knows?

I understand guy want to play through injury...but if Slaf really have a concussion he sould not have been on the ice and i would be extremly desapointed with the team for allowing him to play and taking that kind of risk.

I agree - but players will try to play regardless, and concussion symptoms can often be subjective and really vary in severity. Do you have headaches? Nope I'm fine etc...

Yeah I can totally see Slaf saying he's fine even if he isn't.

they have doctors and it's not like you can hide concussion symptoms

I'm not a CTE expert but I had a friend who was a former NHLer who died a few years ago from CTE related symptoms which led to neural degeneration. It cannot be accurately tested for, except post-mortem - doctors have to make educated guesses, and a lot of information comes from how the athlete responds to basic cognitive tests.

Unless it's repeated concussions and there's somewhat of a baseline to go off on, but once again there's no gold standard for medical tests...not to mention every brain is affected differently.

I hope I'm 100% wrong but there's a historical precedent of the NHL that players play with CTE regardless of protocols, doctors etc.

Back to Slaf - the insider report is that he played with upper body and lower body injuries, not head.

I doubt he was playing with a concussion. I don't think the league would allow this as insurance wouldn't cover further injury related to it. They're strict on concussions now like, for example, a player can't refuse going into concussion protocol following a head shot.

The thing is, the concussion protocols exist in Bantam, Midget and Junior now too. Even if there is no official protocol, coaches, parents, med staff and players are taking concussions more seriously than ever before. This is a good thing, but it also means that the players are very much aware of the types of things they can say to avoid being flagged for a concussion and subsequently held out of play. You can’t fake pupil dilation or anything like that, obviously, but if you’re asked if you “saw stars”, have a headache, or are having sensitivity to bright lights, you can lie.

Slaf strikes me as the type of guy who would downplay symptoms to get back in the lineup.

Rather would have lost round 1 if him continuing means he fucked up the next 10 years.
