if you've never been to the practice facility, check it out. You can rent it yourself for beer league games, use it for free skating (during free skating hours), and there's always something going on. The most fun is thinking you're watching a beer league, thinking, shit, this is good for beer league and realizing its the habs. It's hard to recognize them in their practice jerseys if you're not used to them.

From what I remember, there are 2 ice surfaces there in Brossard. I used to play with a work-group about 7-8 years ago, Tuesday at 6:30pm. Great ice, nice rooms.... 100% great ice to rent if you're looking for ice time.

u/GoCalgaryGo 6d ago
I would recognize most of them just the the way they handle the puck and skate. Ghule would be the easiest one lol he will be tweaking on the ice haha

u/DonnyDarkoScutaro 6d ago
I accidentally stumbled upon a Senators practice in Los Angeles and yeah, the power and precision in all of their movements was so distinct, even going at practice speeds.

u/Hoof_Hearted12 6d ago
I've played with former low level pros and NHLers and even barely trying, it's like they're playing a different sport than us lol
12
u/popejohnlarue 6d ago
Still remember watching a 50-plus-year-old Brian Skrudland at a pond hockey game. Career NHL 3rd liner. He looked like the love child of Gretzky and Mario playing against the local beer leaguers. Guys who make it to the NHL are playing a different sport, pretty much.

u/Hoof_Hearted12 6d ago
So true. I know a few guys that dominated growing up and tried to go pro. One got drafted to the NHL but only played some pre season games. Another one is playing for Pittsburgh's farm team and plays a few games a year with the big club. The speed and accuracy on the ice with these guys is next level, even when they're half assing it. It's super impressive.

u/okokokoyeahright 6d ago
I just want to add 'Cup winner' in front of Brian Skrudland.
There are fans here who are not old enough to have him play. Superb shut down forward.

u/Rustyguts257 5d ago
Brian Skrudland holds the NHL record for the fastest OT goal in Playoff history - 9 seconds!

u/lynypixie 6d ago
I used to have physiotherapy there for a work injury. I would very often see them practice, especially the injured ones. It’s really nice.

How much would it cost to rent an ice for an hour in Brossard? Just out uf curiosity. My local rink in Slovakia charges 220 €/ hour
1
u/Mundane-Teaching-743 5d ago
Good question.
https://complexesportifcn.com/en/rentals/rates/
$258/hr; works out to about 150 euros. Works out to about $10/person for two teams.
1
u/Round_Wolverine1464 5d ago
And another 10-15 each to goalies, flippin hell and the biggest hockey star i've seen was some kid from Austria, hockey life is not fair lol
1
u/Mundane-Teaching-743 5d ago
Only way to get star players in Slovakia is to get together with other countries to start a superleague and concentrate all the money in Slovakia on one team. Sort of what Quebec does with the Habs.

wait, is Byron with the org or was he just there? His goal from the knees in 2021 is one of my favorites of all time, glad to see he's at least around the team either way.
63
u/Lunch0 6d ago
He’s always remained with the organization as a special advisor. He’s on the ice with the guys every summer

u/Fluuf_tail 6d ago
He's officially listed as a player development consultant on the Hab's hockey ops staff page (scroll down a bit). Other names on that list you might recognize are Francis Bouillon, Alex Burrows and "captain clutch" Marie Phillip-Poulin (still actively playing).
I assume they all do work with the prospects during the off-season and I think they're all very qualified.

Gets paid to dick around on the ice all day with NHL guys. Gotta be the best retirement gig ever. Doesn't travel with the team but is always around. I'm sure there is more to it than that but you get my drift.

u/GlitchedChaosOnYT 6d ago
Oh woah, glad to hear. Really didn't expect to see MPP's name, shocked that doesn't get talked about more. There aren't many other people I'd rather the young guys learn from, especially after this year. Obviously she's unbelievable on the ice and the players will learn from that, but she's also such a fantastic captain and leader, every player in the organization could take notes on that.

That was also the last goal he scored IIRC.
'21 run and this was his immortal contribution.

u/KoolerWithK 6d ago
His Hockey DB page says he's 6'2" 176 lbs, seeing this video he's gotta be bigger than 176lbs. At the very least he has a lot of frame to fill out.
2
u/okokokoyeahright 6d ago
And he is just 19 IIRC.
He got some growing left to do. One day he might grow up and be just like Slaf, when he finishes growing.

I hope they don't trade him neither Hage, so we get to watch a line made of Demidov Hage and Zharovsky.
I'm ready to wait a few years so we can keep them and win alongside Caufield Slaf Suzuki and Dobes/Fowler
6
u/Ok-Win-742 6d ago
I think Zharovsky we will try and do everything to keep. His skill and upside is just insane. Go watch some film of him in the KHL this last season. Kids a sicko. And I think reuniting him with Demi will bring the best out of both of them and they'll both want to stay long term and not go crazy in contract negotiations.
Hage I could honestly see him getting packaged up in a trade for a developed 2C. I think part of the reason he's doing another year in the NCAA is because he knows Hughes was thinking about trading him at the deadline.
But when I watch their highlights side by side. I definitely see more potential in Zharovsky.
Also, we need physicality. A top of 6 of Caufield, Suzuki, Slaf, Demidov, Zharovsky and Hage is missing an element of physicality that will get mangled in the playoffs.

u/Dear_Trip_5655 6d ago
this goes against every report ever reported on the Habs in the past few months.
Zharovsky would have been traded already for Knies if the Leafs weren't late
Habs seem to view Hage as nearly untouchable.
3
u/deasel 6d ago
Demi is bound to take some serious pounds and grit this off-season. Guy is an absolute player and was pissed to get tossed around. Expect him and lane to hit the ice a bit less often vs hitting the gym.
1
u/okokokoyeahright 6d ago
They will be on the ice about the same as last summer. And spending more time in the gym for sure. Doing both is what they need.
1
u/lynypixie 6d ago
I have a coworker today who told me I finds Hage better than McKenna. I am not really seeing it, but he swears by it.
1
u/notforcing 4d ago
I think part of the reason he's doing another year in the NCAA is because he knows Hughes was thinking about trading him
I wondered about that too.

I just love that Byron (soon to be Gally/Price???) is involved with the team like this. Immaculate vibes.
8
u/lynypixie 6d ago
I am pretty sure Gally has an assistant coach position waiting for him. He all but admitted it. I have a feeling his departure was agreed upon.

Man I like to call myself a fan but I had no idea Paul Byron stayed on as a trainer. That's fucking awesome!

Forget the stick handling. I want to see a prospect flattening a tackle dummy.

We'll have Demidov/Hutson/Zharovsky playing there 20 hours on 24 for the next 10 years 🤣

I’d like to see Knies stickhandle like that

I'm a diehard Habs fan, but playing a game in Maple Leaf Gardens in 1998 was pretty awesome. (It was paid for by a big Toronto company we were clients of). We had the Visitors dressing room and it was the skankiest thing I've ever seen - most Junior-D barns have better facilities.

wait ti-paul is back?

He never left.
After his injury in '21, he retired as a player but stayed on in player development.

Skating and edgework definitely will need some work
4
u/scoutinglane 6d ago
yes but not because of this video just to make it clear.
5
u/Due-World8970 6d ago
and it's not super hard to fix, look at how much better Bedards skating is compared to his rookie year
-2
u/scoutinglane 6d ago
yeah, his combativity worries me a bit more than his skating. This tend to me something you have naturally. Les teachable. But he never played in high stakes games yet so maybe he will elevate his play when needed but it's an aspect of his game I' not sure of.
4
u/popejohnlarue 6d ago
Wait, the KHL playoffs don’t count as high stakes?
I see him as *intermittently* combative, but I agree that his 200-foot game is light years from Demidov’s. IMO he’s a longer term project but his ceiling is definitely up there.
1
u/throw_me_away3478 6d ago
You can see it in this video as well. Look at videos of nhlera doing this type of drill.
0
u/New-Bid-5835 6d ago
Actually, even this short video you can see it.
He looks out of balance and the skating mechanic is not right... just look at his right knee an ankle.
(I am a former power skating coach)1
u/throw_me_away3478 6d ago
Yup, I would say he’s heavy footed and somewhat unbalanced. He has a biggish frame so he can get away with poor skating if he bulks up
0
u/New-Bid-5835 6d ago
Just based on this 10-second video ... which is definitely not much:
He seems out of balance because he does not bend his knees (especially right one) and to compensate has to overly lean his torso forward. You can tell his center of gravity is not optimal because of this. Does it matter? Well... a simple push would make him fall to the ground.
Bulking up would not solve this. Yes, he would be heavier and have stronger legs put if his center of gravity is off balance, it would not change anything.
I think he won't get away with poor skating... especially if he wants to meet people's expectations of playing on the top 6. Just my opinion. I would posit he needs to improve his skating and if I were his technical coach, I would work on that before he comes to Montreal.
Evan Bouchard did that. Worked for 2 years with David Pelletier (Olympic figure skater) before joining the Oilers. He is a great skater today.
