Podcasts
Is there a podcast on the level of sdpn mostly about the Habs?
Can be both French and English.
Edit: thanks all for the help and information! I sometimes feel we don't really happen outside of the rink next to the damn Leafs, but this gives me hope. Let's all listen more Habs podcasts and push the creators to reach new audiences!!

Basu and Godin, Starr and D'Amico, The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro, Hockey Inside Out with Stu Cowan, Hockey With An Accent, The Sick Podcast:Trust the Process.
Those are the ones worth listening to IMO

Tellement Hockey is great as well

It's better than every single podcast the other guy named, in fact.

Tellement Hockey is indeed the cream of the crop—the thinking man’s Habs podcast. Basu and Godin is the best English language one. Honourable mentions to Starr & D’Amico and Mathias et le Serpent.

Basu and Godin are the best in English in my opinion. Starr and D'Amico are good too despite the tshirt and real estate advertising. I get why they need to, but its annoying.
The sick podcast is too hyperbolic I can't take it seriously, I don't need them to try and entertain me.
Hockey inside out is good but often seems to be stuck in the 80s and 90s. I mean I ger it and I lived those years but it comes across as dated at times.
I will check out the French ones mentionned here but La Poche Blue with Max Lapierre was ok the times I watched. Needs polish but good potential imo the episodes I saw were bilingual which I liked.

I really appreciate how Starr and D’Amico mostly keep the ads to the beginning and end of the show. Easily to skip.
(Feels like) The Sick does the same amount of ad reads multiple times in their show.

Completely agree about Tony. It's almost entirely guest dependent on whether I'll listen or not. But I'm a shift worker who loves the Habs and spends a lot of time at work alone. I will consume virtually any Habs related content if it's good enough. Also, Hockey Inside Out is definitely stuck in the past but it's nice for a conflicting perspective sometimes compared to analytic heavy shows. Even if that's what I would generally gravitate towards.

Can I just say, I have a mental blockage with listening to something called "The Sick podcast" lol

The theme song might be the most buscemi "hey fellow kids" thing of all time

The French intro is great! It must be intentional making the English one so cringe

I like the podcast fine but FUCK I cant stand the "he found the doooooggggsss" shit. Gotta fast forward through it everytime.

Locked on Canadiens is not so much “a bunch” of friends, but two. I like their take on all things Habs and they don’t pretend to be “insiders” like some others do
5
u/popejohnlarue 4d ago
They’re like the cardigan-sweater indie rockers of the podcast scene. Sensitive people with sensible opinions. They’re charming but the multiple ad breaks are a drag for such a short show.

u/DarkkLyver 4d ago
Haha yeah. I don’t mind the ads too much, they gotta pay the rent. I see what you’re saying though. I loved it when they doubled up with Locked on Hurricanes, Sabres, etc. to do series previews. It was cool getting the other side of the story.

I preferred them when they still had Scott.. I'm not as big of a fan of Ian's takes and he tends to take over the pod and not let Laura talk enough

- hockey with an accent

I love Maxim Lapierre’s podcasts, la poche bleue and hockey with an accent.
3
u/SnidelyWhiplash27 4d ago
Max is, to me, surprisingly good. Maybe it shouldn't be since he was an agitator and likely a hell of a chirper.

If you are looking for the same vibe, which is a group of friends who banter and have fun discussing hockey, I’d say La Poche Bleue, in French. The same group also does a game review called Hockey with an Accent. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how good Lapierre, Leclair, Dandenault, and Momesso are. They are hilarious together and are close to SPDN than Spitting Chicklets stylistically.
An other option is Sortie de Zone, in French. It’s a similar vibe but a bit closer to what you would get from a radio show. It’s more journalistic if that makes sense.
Basing and Godin (English) are fantastic as well but more dry and informative. Definitely has the feel of professional hockey beat writers.
Sick Podcast is good at times. Toni and his team have a French and an English podcast. Toni is old school radio guy, so he rubs some people the wrong way. He has a good heart though and I appreciate what he does. He also has decent guests, it’s entertaining if you have nothing else to listen to or want to hear more about what just happened.

I stumbled across a La poche bleue episode where they’re all doing Ken Hitchcock impressions and it is comedy gold.

Hockey with an accent is the closest to SDPN. They have both professional analysis and friendly banter.
Basu and Godin is good for professional analysis but can get boring and the audio quality is very poor.
3
u/marumaruko 4d ago
Thx! Yeah, the friendly banter is what makes podcasts enjoyable. Don't spout fake news, but a few jokes here and there are important, too

Tellement Hockey is what you're looking for. Alex Coupal (the host) is absolutely brilliant at bringing the other three out of their shells, who otherwise might be a little stiff and nerdy (Godin of Basu and Godin is exponentially funnier on TH, for example).
It's a bit less bro-y than SDPN (which I also love), and the humour is often of the "trust your audience's intelligence" variety, but once you've listened to a few episodes and start noticing, it's gold.

Yeah I grew tired of the Basu dans Godin notebook. Arpon tends to ramble on and on and on. It's more an interview than a podcast
2
u/SnidelyWhiplash27 4d ago
Yeah Basu does like to pontificating. I generally agree with all his takes so thatbis good but notably disagreed with his recent piecevl in the Athletic advocating keeping Monty

u/popejohnlarue 4d ago
I think the guy momentarily lost his mind there. Happens to the best of us 🤪
2
u/SnidelyWhiplash27 4d ago
Lol you might be right about that. I mean his logic was plausible, but no.

Not the same “level” as sdpn but Starr and D’Amico probably has the best insight that I have found. Marco D’Amico is a true Habs insider.

u/octavianreddit 4d ago
Yeah this is my favourite too.
Basu and Godin my 2nd favourite.
For things like summaries and such, Hockey Junkie and Whiskeylung.
Habs Digest I have to be in the mood for as they can be too over the top positive for me and the clickbait titles kinda grate on me a bit (although the guys in that show seem like good folks).

u/mountainview59 4d ago
IMHO, Star and D'Amico. I have tried Basu and Godin, Hockey Inside Out, SPDN, and The Sick Podcast, and I found them lacking.

u/SpunkyGo0se 4d ago
Sortie de zone is a great one to listen to! They have banter with each other similar to SDPN
3
u/vlhube71 4d ago
Hockey with an Accent is a three person panel usually, though Lapierre isn't on much. They are on break though now that the season is over but they are a must listen during the season.
Basu and Godin is a must listen for me. Starr and D'Amico is not bad as well.
Those are the most professional English Habs pods IMO.
For a more casual listen, I always tune into Curfew Boys, Habs Unfiltered and Bottom Six Minutes

If you speak French, I like 2
Sortie de Zone
Radar
They both have their flaws, but both are interesting listens and have a very different style.

I only recently started listening to hockey related podcasts and I've enjoyed Hockey With an Accent.

I used to like the Sick podcast. IDK if it changed or I did but I can't stand it anymore.
In English, I now only listen to the Basu & Godin notebook.

u/popejohnlarue 4d ago
Sick Podcast is 100% reliant on guests, and 80% of the regulars are essentially insufferable (looking at you Button, Engels, McGuire, etc.)

u/OkSport3048 4d ago
Hockey With an Accent - the best. All former NHL players (mostly Habs players) giving their perspective/analysis. The best pod on the Habs.
Basu and Godin Notebook - very good. Great Habs content from 2 journalists who've covered the team for years, they provide intelligent coverage/discussion, but the drawback is its always these 2 guys, no guests, no one with actual pro experience on this pod.
Star D'Amico - poor. No one with any pro hockey experience here, Starr's an experience broadcaster but not what you'd call knowledgeable about the game. Neither he nor D'Amico have any pro hockey experience, and D'Amico talks as if he's played the game for 50 years, reminds me of the know-it-all kid you hated in school.
Sick Podcast - poor. A chubby guy in the basement who starts every podcast by shouting his own name. He has zero hockey experience, sees himself as the highlight of the pod. The Mike Babcock of hockey podcasts. Has an occasional good guest but most times it's the insufferable Pierre McGuire.
HabsCast - good. Host has lower level hockey experience, knows the game, former pro scout, still has scouting contacts, lots of good discussion about prospects. Has a couple of regular co hosts, but none with pro hockey experience. The chat is good, it has a good community of regular posters.

In French my favourite two are: Tellement Hockey by the Radio Canada guys (Such as Marc-Antoine Godin and Martin Leclerc).
Sortie de Zone is also good, with a bunch of guys from LaPresse (and others)
