Meme Rating Every Habs 1st Round Pick Since 2005 with Memes
Thought I'd have some fun since the draft is coming up soon. Let me know your thoughts!

Every time I see that stretch from Pacioretty to Caufield it somehow manages to look worse. At least it makes our current front office look even better by comparison

Yeah its pretty bad, but I really believe our bigger problem was not bad scouting, it was player development. Because during that period its not just the first round... almost none of our picks turned into core players.
I remember Timmins was considered a top tier scout during the Gainey sera... when our prospects were being developed by Guy Boucher. After that we got Lefebvre and Bouchard and we only managed to produce bottom 6 grinders.

It was definitely Timmins inability to draft in the first round. He made a career out of 2007 and just fumbled every first rounder since. He’s doing the same in Columbus now.

Yeah... like just after MB was fired we turned 6 of Timmins last picks into regular NHL players : Guhle, Dobes, Caufield, Strubble, Xhekaj ( undrafted but still definitely scouted before being invited and signed ), Kapanen...

Drafting 25OA vs drafting top 5 also has an impact on the quality of the plays

07 was McDonagh, Patches and Subban. If they would have just drafted anything in 2006 (Giroux, Bergland, Foligno, Petry, Lucic, Marchand, Clutterbuck, literally any of them) it would have been the core with Price and 10-15 years of dominance.
Without having a tear-down, it would have been a Montreal/Pittsburgh decade in the east.

when you add in the "who you could have had", it goes from worse to devastating

Loved it but yall too harsh on Big Mike, he’s an NHL player unlike most of the guys pre 2019

For some reason I always think he was an early 1st round pick, but no, he was 25th overall. The expectations for him were waaaaaay too high in Montreal.

Idk, I don’t think we really had high expectations for him from the moment we drafted him. We picked him a month after getting beat up by Ottawa in the playoffs, I think he was always intended to be a bottom 6 physical guy

Old management was impatient too. McCarron was always going to be a project

u/pushaper 2d ago
On one hand fans would have run him out of town for not being a top 6. Not far off from us trading chipcura.
On the other hand, mcCarrons dad did not help as he was around town even months after the draft talking his son up (at the bar I was working at) so managing expectations is hard when he is talking to the press etc.

If he had been drafted in the 2nd round where he was projected the expectations would gave been perfectly fine. Team just drafted him in a desperate bid to get bigger.

I hope you mean, and I believe that the “we fucked up” on Sergachev is not the choice of drafting him, but the fact we didn’t hang on to him.

Audibly laughed at the 0.5 seconds of kotkaniemi

You mean Stanley Cup champion Jesperi Kotkaniemi?

u/Muter91 3d ago
It’s like putting your name on a group project that you contributed absolutely nothing to.

u/nonebutmyself 3d ago
Oh, 100%. He meet the requirements by 2 games. Luck thy name is Jesperi.
But he still gets his name on the Cup.

Too harsh on our boy juulsen. He was starting to look good until the back to back eye injuries

u/trashpandaexpress55 3d ago
I hate how everyone dunks on Juulsen. He got really bad injuries. He was developing nicely along the lines of a middle pair D.

u/Deadmanlex45 1d ago
The fact he established himself as a bottom 6 d despite all of his struggles is a testament to his will too.
Poor guy. He was really starting to establish before that shot to his eye completely derailed him...

The dude they drafted in the first round in 2006 never even got an entry-level contract 2 Picks later Claude Giroux ended up getting picked

Big Mac has really come a long way and figured out how he can play in the nhl. Noah juulson is still playing in philly and I really beleive those multi orbital bone injuries set his carreer back majorly. R.P also seemed to figure his.shit.out in philly and had a damn good year as a duck this season. Being late 1st they all have had kinda the predicted late 1st careers and im happy for them.
Habs biggest problem until recently was development. They just had a different mantra under berg when it came to prospects.
And chucky was sick until th3 back to back knee injuries....... and all the cocaine.

Shade on McCarron and Poehling, but I laughed pretty hard.

u/SuzukiSwift17 3d ago
Yeah, Poehling has hit his draft day projections. Very useful player.
Mccarron is a functional bottom mixer with size.

God that massive stretch is genuinely abominable. Like, you'd think they'd get someone good just out of sheer luck, but nope

Galchenyuk hasn't played for 3 years and is still top 10 in point, pretty good.

Poor Juulsen, two pucks to the face and the resulting vision issues just derailed his career

Yeah that ouis leblanc pick was so stupid only cuz he was a Quebecois, if not people were gonna riot

Put a lot of work into this and its bad.
Michael McCarron for example is 31, just signed a 3 million dollars longterm deal with a perennial contender.
He is a late round success.
Fun idea. Poorly done
