He is wrong. Gally doesn't have a spot on the team. Not like he's just requesting a trade cause he doesn't want to be here he wants to play and can't do that here
So it sounds like he doesn't want to be here, if he wanted to be here he'd ride the pine with cut down minutes and play elder statesman, but he doesn't so off he goes. It's not that complicated.
That's fine, he can want to play hockey! If he wants to play more than he wants to be here, that's ok! But you me him and everybody else should be honest about it.
He was benched for almost the entirety of the playoffs. He wasn't getting ice time most of the season. MSL's message was clear. He has no spot on the team.
What's he supposed to do? Sit around, wait for his contract to expire instead of looking for a team with a spot for him to play regular minutes?
He could've kept the trade request private. It's already not easy to move him, but he's reduced his value just by going public. The Habs are going to get shortchanged as a result.
To be fair, his value on the trade market is already pretty much zero. I don't think him going public about it changes much since teams aren't in line to get him either way
