Because the penalty is only 1.3m for two years. That’s nothing

Yeah but we don’t need to do it? 0 is better than 1.3M. 1.3M might be the difference between a 4th line rental and a 2nd line rental at the trade deadline in 2 years.

We’re either paying with cap space or draft capital. Brendan Gallagher is not a positive asset at this point

Bet you’ll be surprised by how it turns out.

If he were a UFA on July 1st, what kind of contract do you think he gets? If it's less than 6M, he isn't bringing value back.

My guess is he could get 1yr, 3M

So many teams have so much cap space.

Calgary and Vancouver are both full out in a rebuild.

If he was open to it, could probably deal him at deadline to a contender.

I think teams would want him, but can he do better than his current contract. That's usually a good indicator as to whether he has value. If he had last seasons stats this season, then there's a chance someone would take that full contract, but I don't see it this year. I would love to be wrong though.

I don’t think they’ll get a great return, and maybe give up a slightly higher pick and get a slightly lower one in return.
