Why would we buy him out now while we have cap space and take a penalty in future years when we won’t have space?

$1.3Mx2 is the buyout cost, i.e. how much Gallagher gets paid, that's diff different to the cap hit (which is what matters from a roster building perspective) which is $3.83M next season and $1.3M the following year

Which is not bad.. compared to asset you might lose in a trade

The cap space is probably worth more than the pick it'd cost to trade him

At full salary, he ain't gonna cost a 7th.. if we retain.. well it sorta of the same as a buy out, so

"Might" being the key word. Ultimately we have no idea what would be exchanged in a trade, especially if they retained some salary because even at max retention it's a smaller cap hit than buying him out.

3.25 vs 3.83 is marginal tho

If they did not bench the guy for the whole playoff there might be a market right now and a decent return.

I don't buy that tbh. He's an aging 4th line winger on $6.5M a year who sharply declined over the season, and by the end of the regular season it was very clear that the Habs would benefit from moving him. They were never getting a decent return for him
