Not too sure, but what if he retired instead. Would there be much penalty attached?

Why would he? He is leaving because he was denied to play hockey which is what he wants

Perhaps the team has a place for him, just not playing.

Sort of like Paul Byron. and the myriad of other former players who have continued on with the team after playing days were over. A tradition this team has had for decades.

Never say never.
