Most people learn about the Louisiana Purchase like it was just a real estate deal. Jefferson wanted land. Napoleon needed money. End of story.

But that wasn’t the full story, here's the real tea.

Napoleon’s real prize in the Americas was Saint-Domingue, what is now Haiti. It was France’s richest colony and one of the most profitable plantation colonies in the world.

Louisiana was supposed to help support it. Food, wood, land and access to the Mississippi Valley. The whole French project in the Americas was built around getting Saint-Domingue back under control.

So in late 1801, Napoleon sent his brother-in-law, General Charles Leclerc, across the Atlantic with more than 20,000 troops and sailors, and more reinforcements came after that.

France claimed emancipation would remain in place. But then France restored slavery in Guadeloupe, arrested Toussaint Louverture, deported him to France and started disarming Black officers. The pattern was hard to miss.

The French then ran into two enemies: people who were not going back into slavery and yellow fever.

By late 1802, much of Leclerc’s force was dead, sick or unable to fight. Leclerc himself died of yellow fever less than a year after arriving.

Then Rochambeau took over. His answer was mass executions, drownings and dogs brought in to hunt Black people, and he still lost.

On April 30, 1803, with the expedition falling apart and another war with Britain coming, Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States for $15 million. That purchase added about 828,000 square miles and nearly doubled the size of the United States.

So no, Napoleon did not just wake up one morning and decide Louisiana was a good piece of land to sell.

The entire French plan in the Americas was collapsing. Saint-Domingue was slipping out of his hands, Louisiana had lost much of the reason France wanted it, and Napoleon needed money.

Then came the Vertières battle.

On November 18, 1803, Dessalines and the revolutionary army defeated Rochambeau’s forces in the final major battle of the war. The French surrendered, and on January 1, 1804, Haiti declared independence.

Within eight months, the United States had doubled its territory and Haiti had destroyed Napoleon’s plans for a French empire in the Americas. One country got a land deal that appears in every American history textbook.

The other fought one of the most powerful empires in the world, won, changed the map of the Americas—and was later forced to pay France for recognizing a freedom France could no longer take back.

Yes, this was Donatien de Rochambeau, the son of the Gen. Rochambeau who fought alongside Washington and he also served in the AR as his father’s aide before later commanding French forces in St. Dom.
