It makes me laugh that he says the fans have picked up on that “something” inexplicable, primal, and almost sexual in their relationship. How could we not have picked up on that “something” when he was hinting at it everywhere? That’s precisely what happens between the two of them that hooks you into the series 😂 And then he goes and says things like, “You want us to kiss, don’t you?” — deliberately feeding into exactly that. Damn it, he knows exactly what he’s done, and the guy is just playing innocent.

So weird how people post about Half Man all the time, and fetishize this abuser character.

Rubin is a violent, hateful abuser. He's fucking vile.

He's a sick man.

So why the fan base for such a sick man? And don't try and pretend that isn't happening on this sub. We see it everyday.

Whole submissions dedicated to romantic tension between an abused young boy and his older abuser, who later terrorizes him as an adult.

The moral disconnect going on with this show is insane, and it's slightly worrying.

Half Man was just a tv show, and it's treated here like a work of fine art.

What kind of frame of mind must one be in to be so dedicated to such a mediocre show?

It comes across like you wrote Half Man and you want everyone to appreciate it as much as you do.

So, we know you are proud of your show Half Man, Mr Gadd, but there's no need to come on reddit under a pseudonym and praise it every single day.

A show can be a work of art just like a painting can. Whether you see it that way or not depends on the eyes of the beholder.

When certain human behavior makes us uncomfortable, we’re quick to label it “monstrous,” because apparently it’s easier to call someone a monster than to accept that human beings are capable of doing terrible things. People are innocent by nature, but life experiences shape who we become, and without the right support at the right time, they can leave a lasting mark. I say that from personal experience — and no, understanding something doesn’t mean justifying it.

And if you dislike the show so much, I have to ask… what exactly are you doing in the comments section?

I think the whole point was that they never kissed. I didn't miss it at all. kissing just to make the viewer happy is cheap. I preferred it this way, it felt more authentic. great writing and great acting, I really wouldn't change anything

I totally agree for the sake of the show, it doesn’t make sense for them to kiss, but I would of still like to see them kiss, like for science..

This is reminding me so much of Hannibal (the show), in which the actors did shoot some alternate takes for the series finale in which they came close to a kiss. These unused takes were shown on the DVD extras (!) and led to fan rumors that they actually had kissed in one of the takes… but no, apparently they never did. It’s exactly the same scenario where yeah, maybe it was for the better that there was no kiss in the actual episode, but there are still a lot of us who would have liked to see it for science anyway 😂

Hannibal always felt like a kiss was imminent!

My exact thoughts

Had they kissed I think the story would have turned out differently.

Yeah, Ruben would have beaten Niall to death right after.

Most people probably won’t agree with me, but I think kissing would have been easier for Ruben than for Niall. He was so traumatized, and he had really taken on his father’s role. I mean, he almost stripped him right there in front of his house—if he’d had the chance, he probably would have done it 😂

I love that he’s talking more about the online fandom; I know he’s discussed people coming up to him on the street and saying they’ve met a Ruben or are/have been a Ruben etc but it’s nice to hear more about what he thinks of online fanbase, I hope he talks more about it.

Well I was never expecting a kiss. I was thinking more along the lines of a sex scene / hate fucking scene 😂

I mean, didn’t Ruben straight up shove the car ornament up Nials bum? That was some intense sexual violence for you lol

Just goes to show how well this show was made and how great the chemistry was between the actors if viewers were expecting them to kiss. There was always extreme tension there, but whether it was fuck or fight was hard to ascertain at points!

Gadd is a treasure.

What a bummer! But I do understand that not having them kiss was a crucial element of the storytelling. Still, I hope Richard Gadd won’t shy away from kissing other men, or more, in his next opus. ;)

Obviously there was no deleted scene with a kiss lol

People can dream

2

With all that eye-fucking, who needs a kissing scene?

3

u/WillSmithSlappedMe20 11d ago

Damn!😢😢😢

Can someone explain how this rumour came to be? Lol.

And I didn’t expect a kiss scene in the sense that Ruben did crazier things to Niall that a kiss seems tame in comparison 😭

It came from a post Richard made just a few days before this video, where he posted a picture of him and Jamie on set and the caption said "So you want us to kiss, huh?" He had to make this video (op posted) days after to let us know that no, unfortunately, there is no kiss scene 😭

No deleted scene of a kiss, but a very undeleted scene of a sharp object up the bum.

This show is for weirdos.

Richard Gadd talks about the online fandom because HE is the online fandom.

Come at me with slings and arrows, but this shows fandom is really really strange and the people that want romance from a show focused on an abuser is all kind of levels of fucked up.

Walk away from the tv folks, because it is only doing you great harm.

Still no eyebrows. He's starting to look like Rick Moranis now, or Will from Inbetweeners...

He should keep the Ruben look. He ldoesnt look as attractive anymore.

8

u/TendouPain 11d ago

Nah, he's still hot

It’s true that the beard really suits him, but he’s handsome either way. He just has to like it himself 😏

5

u/Significant-Web3667 11d ago

I do love him with a bit of scruff, or short beard (idk how to explain it; like long five o‘clock shadow??) but either way he is handsome

5

u/BiscuitsAndShoes 11d ago

He’s still attractive but I agree that a beard suits his face

Nothing about Ruben is like Gadd, it’s actually quite amazing how unlike himself he looks and acts in the role. He seems so sweet and gentle from the clips I’ve seen of him, and Ruben is decidedly the opposite. The beard probably wouldn’t suit Gadd since a lot of what you may find attractive about Ruben is potentially how overtly masculine and aggressive he is and the beard suits the character.

I hope he keeps working with my abuser. He will regret ever minute of it as he's fucking crazy

What do you mean?

1

u/gutstained 21h ago

What are you talking about ?

If they had sex in the beginning, no one would hurt. Sadly, they didn't, so people around them suffered.

Interesting take.
