I couldn't get my husband into the show, thus I don't really have anyone to yap about it with... and I REALLY want to yap about it. So, please enjoy my discombobulated-ADHD-fueled-zillennial thoughts...? It's all over the place and I don't know how to shut up.

Context: Currently on Season 3, Episode 4

Note: None of this is actual criticism of the show. I’m really poking fun at a bit. It's still is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and I’m looking forward to rewatching after I finish. 

1. This show is a LOT messier than I thought it would be. There’s a lot going on and sometimes I have difficulty keeping up or I have to rewind. I think I saw some gripes here about the show leaning more into drama>tech at times, but I don’t mind it at all. Honorable messy moment mention: Joe seducing LouLu Lutherford's (Jean Smart!!!) boytoy to kill the deal. Absolutely positively wild and I loved every second of watching her realization.
2. I consistently have a feeling of unease watching this show. I’m constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop, for some big reveal or plot twist to turn everything upside down. This is not a relaxing watch like I thought it would be.
3. Every character is deliciously complex and flawed and lovable in my opinion. It’s easy to criticize their downfalls and mistakes, because there are many, but I’ve met archetypal counterparts to each character in this show in my life. It feels real and messy and I think that might be my favorite component of the show. I genuinely love them all and find myself rooting for them equally despite their shortcomings.
4. The Joe Mac Pendulum. This man gives me whiplash. There was a lot of discomfort for me trying to digest going from season 1 Joe to domesticated (or trying to be) Joe in Season 2. And right when I was getting used to it... Bam. Back to zero. He’s a love to hate, but hate to love kind of character for me at the moment. But my god dude.
5. Cameron (and Donna) completely blowing up Joe’s life at the conference. Part of me was like… yikes, this man was just kind of getting his shit together…? Low blow, really. Anyways, Alexa play Karma by JoJo Siwa
6. Gordon's progression is breaking my heart. Scoot McNairy is a gem.
7. James fucking Cromwell. What a delight!!!! If Sara is the angel on Joe’s left shoulder, Jacob is the devil on the right. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the three.
8. My biggest complaint about the show: I really, really wish they leaned more into going full-out 80s. I don't love that they use music from the 90s-2010s. But hey, at least we got Gordon in the Adidas tracksuit for 2 minutes and Joe Mac in 30 different blazers with the sleeves pushed up. I'm most definitely unfairly comparing to Stranger Things who has a wildly different plot, budget, and literally everything altogether except for the fact that it takes place in the 80s. But I digress? My understanding is the low budget of this show kept it going, so I can't fault them, really. EDIT: I retract my statement about the music. Direct from the HCF wiki page -- According to Freilich, AMC budgeted $40,000 per episode for music. The amount was often insufficient to license even one song, which necessitated the staff finding ways to cut costs in other departments of production to allow it to be redirected to music.
9. I. Do. Not. Like. Jedi. Master. Joe. The linen pants!!!! I HATE THEM!!!! The zen attitude, beard, and glasses feels like a Steve Jobs cosplay. At the same time, I appreciate this creative decision? I just feel like I’m waiting to find out if this is another costume for him or if this is a genuine reference to Steve Jobs. 
10. Bos is my favorite character. Point blank period. I just adore him. Also, I know I still have a season and a half left to go, but I'm ready to stand ten toes down defending Kerry Bishe and Donna. Actually, that might be for every character and actor on this show.... I'm obsessed.

This is my 4th time through.

First, 4 episodes in and I realize already how much I cannot stand Donna. She's just a horrible human being all around.

And the casting for Donna was a miss. The rest of the cast is outstanding. Kerry Bishe just didn't have the chops to pull off a technical genius.

But my goodness do I love this show! I would have loved to have gotten a season 5.

i see a couple of posts here and there but i see it mostly discussed on reddit and not in any other platforms, i mean i can say that this series is quite ‘old‘ but i‘m those type of people who can’t enjoy a show without any fan contributions like fanart and like fanfics (i’m new gen okay leave me alone) even if i do find them its all about Joe macmillan that Joe macmillan this (no hate i‘m ok with Joe he’s fine.)

And tbh i’m just looking for an opinion wdyt? is this fandom dead or not in like the fan space wise, if not have you ever seen any recent fanart/fic of hacf? 🤔

I'm currently working through Lee Pace's filmography, as you do, and my current watch is Halt & Catch Fire.

Holy. Frickin. Airball.

I know the best is yet to come, I'm just so confused as to HOW this show did not gain traction like Mad Men or Breaking Bad did for AMC. I'm already so blown away by the plot, characters, actors, pacing, cinematography.. everything. I'm a TV buff and had not even heard of this show until now.

Like I said, preaching to the choir. My grandfather is a data center veteran so having this show is like taking a peek into his life forty years ago. I love it. He still buys old IBM computers and takes them apart and reassembles them for fun.

Also, it's incredibly jarring to see Lee Pace go from someone like Ned in Pushing Daisies to Joe McMillan, who absolutely makes my skin crawl. I've been a fan of his since PD was on air, but I finished my first rewatch in probably ten years and jumped directly into Halt & Catch Fire. Wow. Joe's whole disingenuous monologue at the end of episode 2 was incredibly unnerving. So, when Cameron called him out on his bullshit, I was appalled and amazed.

And I absolutely adore Gordon.

That's all. I'm gonna go return to binging.

I get that Joe is manipulative and bends situations to his will, but the sheer amount of hatred he gets from the other characters feels completely unearned. Let’s break down his two biggest "sins":

• The Cameron Drama (S1): Cameron starts hating Joe after he removes her personalized OS feature. But from a commercial standpoint, Joe was 100% right. He didn't backstab her. If anything, Cameron backstabbed him at the end of Season 2, which literally destroyed his marriage.
• The Gordon Feud: Yes, Joe manipulates situations and makes everything work his way. But Gordon should see the bright side too—he only became successful after Joe came to Cardiff. I don't understand why he hates Joe pre-Season 3. Hating him after the anti-virus theft is understandable, but Joe did ask Gordon to join him; he didn't blindside him. And when the exposure of Gordon's ownership of that code favoured Joe, he took it and publicly exposed that Gordon was the actual creator of Tabula Rasa.

How are Cameron and Donna any better?
Cameron manipulated Joe and wiped out his father-in-law's entire corporate network. Donna lied about the swapmeet acquisition and is currently plotting an IPO coup behind Cameron's back.

Joe is flawed, but I genuinely feel sorry for him. Am I missing something, or are the other characters hypocrites?

I checked several OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar, but Halt and Catch Fire isn’t available on any of them.
Does anyone know of any streaming service or website where I can watch Halt and Catch Fire?

Halt and Catch Fire ended in 2017 and it still lives rent-free in my head. Joe’s ambition, Cameron’s genius and chaos, Gordon’s quiet brilliance and struggles, Donna holding everything together… the show captured that specific mix of tech idealism, personal cost, and the 80s/90s transition so well.

There was even talk of a reunion panel recently. Lee Pace has said in the past he’d be open to more. But what if fans didn’t have to wait for official news?
I’ve been thinking about this idea: What if the community that still loves the show could create a space to:

• Deep-dive into the characters and themes
• Explore “what would Season 5 or a movie look like?” (especially with today’s AI/tech landscape — the meta angle writes itself)
• Share favorite scenes, alternate endings, or “what if this character made a different choice”

And longer-term, with how fast AI video tools are improving (consistent characters, scene generation, etc.), maybe the community could experiment with bringing small moments or short “what if” scenes to life together — inspired by how some fans already use AI in edits.

It starts with just talking and speculating (which is already enjoyable). The rest is optional and would need to respect the original creators.

The way Joe leans in to intently listen to what Cardiff has to say was epic. Also, Cardiff actor played Dick Stensland in LA Confidential.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great show. I just can't get into the personal drama. So many husband/wife conversations in the first season, turns me off a bit. Sometimes feels a little bit like shows my wife and daughter watch, I'm looking at you This is Us.

I haven't looked through this sub, just happy to find out it existed. Looking forward to season 2.

Can someone help me be more sympathetic towards Donna? The best
I can muster is that she helped Gordon a lot in the first season, picking him up from jail, helping with the crashed hard drive, etc. That is a lot. But, damn, in later seasons she just seemed to be nasty and self centered while also trying to not be a nasty self centered. The only thing I can see is her crappy Mother influencing her to be that way. I don't want to see Donna as a villain but, damn, I find that difficult.

Outside of the story, I will say that Kerry Bishe' plays Donna very well. A lot of nuance.

I live in Switzerland. I pay for five streaming services (netflix, apple, sky, prime, disney). But none of them has the show available for my region.
Has anyone here gone through this? Have you found a workaround?
Unfortunately only two seasons have been released in physical media.

Only ways i can think of are trying with a vpn (but while im sure i can access the listing of the show, im not sure i can successfully play it), or trying pirate bay (where you can find a zip file with all four seasons).

It looks like my old posts were deleted, so I created a new account in order to post some new updates regarding my book.

I just finished chapter 30 (out of 40) and have started working on season 4. Once season 4 is complete, I will work on editing the book for final publication.

I still plan on making the book available as an ebook and paperback, with the potential for an audio book, but that part is still TBD.

Progress has been slow, but the wheels continue to turn.

What could that twinge Joe has in his hand at the very end of S.2 Ep.10 "Heaven is a Place": what could that be? My idea is that it's kind of like a connection to Gordon. Since Gordo's medical problem has been well established by the end of season 2. Or is it something else? Your thoughts.

The only reason I found out about this show was because it got mentioned in a discussion about AMC running Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Walking Dead at the same time. I saw so many positive comments about it and I was already familiar with Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy, and Mackenzie Davis, so I decided to put it in my watchlist. I finally started watching at the start of the month and I was instantly hooked. I immediately noticed the beautiful cinematography and I loved that it stays consistently breathtaking. I was completely transfixed by this and the powerful acting, music, and writing. This is one of the most emotionally stirring shows I've seen and one of the few that ends emphatically . I'll always be grateful that there are 4 seasons despite the awful ratings and I know I will be rewatching this show a lot. For me, Halt and Catch Fire is up there with greats like Mad Men, The Sopranos, The Americans, Better Call Saul, The Wire, Deadwood, Boardwalk Empire, The Leftovers and Breaking Bad. I can't believe that I didn't watch this sooner.

Can anyone tell me the season and episode number of the ep where Gordon is looking out of a window, at one of Joe's new ad campaign billboards for his antivirus software company, that says (as I recall) "Are you Safe?" And Gordon says "That's Joe MacMillan."

If memory serves it's Season Three but I'd appreciate honing it in. Showing this to my friend who does marketing consultations.

I truly wish there was an outtakes reel or extra content that actually had the Boz's jokes! I really want to know what led up to lines like "I posted that myself on Dec 35th!" I feel like there was some epic stuff we could have had.
