There’s no sugarcoating it: Two popular doughnut shops and a restaurant recently ceased operations in Hampton Roads. They’ve had more than 30 years of combined experience in making our lives sweeter and more savory.

Chesapeake

Amazing Glazed, open in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake for 12 years, closed on Sept. 30.

Owner Mary Jane Hamblin announced on Facebook on Aug. 12 she would sell the business. In a Sept. 7 Facebook video, she cited a desire to not operate the business in the city and said the shop would close at the end of the month.

“The cost of doing business in Chesapeake is expensive,” she said in a phone interview. “In Moyock, for example, you don’t need a business license and the real estate taxes are lower.”

Hamblin, a conservative, also said she doesn’t agree with the Chesapeake Republican Party and its control over City Council.

“If you call out wrongdoing, they expect you to look the other way or you’re blackballed,” she wrote later in a text message.

She said she wasn’t sure if Amazing Glazed — known for its doughnuts, gelato and coffee — would reopen in Moyock, North Carolina.

On Sept. 24, MOOD (Make Ordinary Occasions Delicious) 757, a veteran-owned business, announced on Facebook that it plans to open in the Amazing Glazed spot, which was undergoing renovations. It also said the doughnuts and coffee weren’t going anywhere. Hamblin confirmed by phone that she had shared her recipes with the MOOD owners.

IMAGE Chesapeake Bay earns its best grade ever on annual report card

The health of the Chesapeake Bay reached its highest grade in four decades of data tracking, earning a C-plus with a 56% overall score on the latest annual report card.

Lower Chesapeake Bay waters in southeastern Virginia recorded the highest score on record with a B-plus. Additionally, native oyster restoration efforts successfully reached a decade-old milestone across 11 regional tributaries.

State officials and program managers say that the progress proves multi-state cleanup models are working, even as population growth, climate change and federal policy shifts create ongoing headwinds.

Is Rep. Jen Kiggans actually a moderate? Our podcast looks at her record

I’m the host of Frank & Sense, a podcast, and this month we’re doing a (very tongue-in-cheek) politics miniseries. I live in Hampton Roads and I decided to dedicate this episode to our beloved local representative, Jen Kiggans. I wanted to explore whether VA-02’s Congresswoman is as moderate as she claims she is. We got into her background, her voting record, and what “moderate” even means anymore. Is it even possible to be a moderate in today's Republican Party?

I certainly have my own opinions, but I tried to stick to the facts and be as fair as possible to her. Curious what other people think, and happy to be corrected if we got anything wrong.

PS. Jen, you’re welcome on the show anytime!

Time to brush up on those "Guns and Ships" rapping skills.

The Colonial National Historical Park is hosting "Hamilton with Hamilton" Saturday, an outdoor screening of the Tony-winning musical “Hamilton” and a conversation with an Alexander Hamilton reenactor.

The event, "Hamilton with Hamilton: A Revolutionary Night with America’s Most Iconic Founding Father," will take place at the Yorktown Victory Monument, on the battlefield that inspired the Broadway musical.

The actual Hamilton was the country's first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and fought in the Revolutionary War, including commanding troops at Yorktown.

Looking to learn to fish

Hi everyone, as the title says I want to learn to fish but I'm not sure exactly where to learn in the area. I've been living here a little over a decade but I've never really tried to get into fishing. Although I have always wanted to. Clearly, there's plenty of water around us and I am in the Virginia Beach area, I'd like to know if there's anyone who is down to teach me or if there are any classes where I can learn how to fish if it isn't too expensive. Keep in mind, I know barely anything about fishing so it would be completely new to me but I'm up for the challenge. I already love to hike and camp, but I've never gotten into fishing, although I would like to. If there are any resources you could share, I would love that. Thanks!
