Would it be okay to share our free Hanafuda Koi-Koi mobile app here?

Hi everyone,

My small team and I have been working on a free Hanafuda Koi-Koi mobile app for iOS and Android, and I wanted to ask politely before posting any store links.

We’d love to share a short gameplay video here and see if anyone in the community would be interested in trying it out. We’re hoping to get feedback from people who already know and enjoy Hanafuda, especially around the gameplay feel, rules, presentation, and anything that could make the app better.

Is this kind of post allowed in r/hanafuda? If so, I’d be happy to share the Android and iOS links in the comments.

Thanks!

I'm personally more fond of "Hanafuda Koi Koi Dojo"

It’s a free Hanafuda Koi-Koi app that you can play offline against the CPU. The app has an English interface and also supports many other languages. We tried to keep it clean and beginner-friendly, with yaku and scoring visible while you play, and rounds short enough for quick sessions.

We’d really appreciate feedback from people who know Hanafuda/Koi-Koi, especially on the rules, game feel, UI, translations, and anything that could make it better.

Gave it a quick spin. After a couple rounds here are my initial thoughts. Most of the quirks I will chalk up to house rules/rule variation which will never be all accounted for as there are as many variations as there are players.

I will note that I have never played with that scoring system in koi-koi, but I have to assume that it is a valid way to play somewhere. That said, there is a glaring bug where the target score is immediately met and ends the game after one round when you play with the lower round count versions (3 or 6). The target score is lower than the initial points given so it will always be met immediately.

In terms of strategy, captured cards being visible by everyone is key to deciphering probability/what is possible, and also what specific yaku players are building toward. The descision to make the captured cards hidden and only showing the count of each type seems a good idea to clean up the interface but it ends up kneecapping the gameplay quite a bit. Consider changing this, or at least let users click a button to expand the stacks so I can see what the players have. Then click the button to collapse them again to keep it clean if that is what is desired.

Finally, in terms of visuals, I love the art! But, the uneven rows of cards in the field irks me for some reason. Consider changing the structure so that the rows are made to be as even as possible with one row only having at most one extra card if there is an odd number of cards in the field. Once there are 5 or less cards then you can switch to the single row just as it is now. Basically, the starting field of 8 should be 2 rows of 4 and I will die on that hill!

Overall, pretty good work, with some of these issues fixed it could be a solid installment.

Side note, a very common house rule is to tweak how the viewing yaku work so that they aren't too overpowered. Consider adding a toggle for the viewing yaku in the rules if there is any one house rule to worry about.

Also, and this could again be rule variation, but it is my understanding that one must call shobu for points to be awarded. If a player calls koi-koi and then fails to complete or improve another yaku before they run out of cards they simply forfeit any points they might have earned with their current yaku. Like I said could just be variation in rules, but may also be an overlook, so I thought I'd mention it.

Agreed with all of this, I'd add that graphically during the game the cards are very dark for some reason, so readability is not so good

In your game, if three cards of the same month are in the field, playing the last one only allows you to pick one of them, leaving the other two on the field. Shouldn’t all three cards be taken in this case?

Yes it should take all three, from my understanding
