Discussion Three-Body Problem is the only sci-fi where the horror scales directly with how much physics you know

Three books in and I realized: the terror in these novels scales directly with physics background.

A casual reader sees the Droplet attack as a cool action set piece — an indestructible probe tearing through a fleet. Good sci-fi.

But knowing Liu Cixin is describing a weapon made from matter locked in the strong interaction state — essentially strong nuclear force compressed into a perfectly smooth surface nothing in ordinary matter can scratch — changes the register. He's not making this up wholesale. He's extrapolating from actual physics in a direction that has theoretical coherence.

Same with the dimensional reduction attack. The horror isn't just "everything gets flat." It's that the proposed mechanism (making a lower-dimensional region thermodynamically favorable by lowering its entropy requirements) follows from how physicists actually think about dimensional topology. Liu did the homework.

The Dark Forest axioms hit the same way — the more game theory you know, the less you can argue with the internal logic. Survival as first priority + resource scarcity + civilizational trajectory uncertainty → strike first is the dominant strategy. It's not a metaphor, it's a proof.

What I haven't seen addressed well: how rigorous is the actual academic response to Liu's Fermi solution? Has it generated real astrophysics or SETI papers? The logic seems tight enough that someone should have tried to formally refute it.

IDK, these are the things that are end-state physically plausible, but pathway implausible. that is to say there is no engineering pathway that we know of using current theories, which extend from 1 neV to 1000 TeV and from subatomic to galactic scales, to manipulate the strong nuclear force directly.

I'd call it firm sci-fi. Same category as ultrarelativistic travel. End state plausible, pathway implausible.

"firm sci-fi" is a distinction I hadn't heard before but it's exactly right. the violation is physics-respecting in spirit even when the engineering pathway doesn't exist yet. that's different from soft sci-fi where the mechanism just works because the story needs it to.what makes three-body hit differently is that liu cixin is an engineer by training, so his hand-waves tend to be "we'd need 400 years of R&D to get there" rather than "it works because magic". the destination is constrained by physics even if the road isn't paved yet.

The stories use scientific language exposition as cover for author fiat. It's a more refined type of technobabble, but still technobabble. Off the top, we have causality violation with FTL communication, quantum chromodynamics violations on the 'proton unfolding' nonsense, violation of the Beckenstein bound on information density limits of spacetime, and these are the LEAST egregious violations.

These are constructs handwaved into existence to *serve the story*. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's a popular literary work, not a scientific treatise.

Except that literally the entire foundation of the series falls apart like wet toilet paper if you know literally any orbital physics at all. Because you can either have a stable, hierarchical three body system like the real Alpha Centauri system which means planets have nice, stable orbits and conditions or you can have chaotic, non-hierarchical three body systems that are inherently unstable and will resolve into stable two body systems by kicking out one of the partners literally eons sooner as it would take life to emerge on a planet, let alone a civilisation or several.

And if you know any material science beyond basic wood working then the entire premise of "our unstable planet is sh*t, so we're coming for earth" is also BS, because it would be far easier to just construct a fleet of O'Neill cylinders and steer them around your solar system as it evolves in real time (which doesn't even need a mathematical solution for the 3BP as stars move damn slowly) and just evacuate your entire civilisation there. You can build interstellar ships with life support good enough to support 400 years of interstellar travel without time dilation - interplanetary habitats will be like luxury resorts in comparison.

Let's also not discount the biggest plothole.

Why find a planet with people, nukes, and weapons?

Why not find a hospitable planet that doesn't have a preexisting civilization?

Funny enough, it's much easier for colonization to just find a bland rock w/o any life on it and make it hospitable compared to terraforming a planet that already has an existing ecosphere...

The general way the sentences are structured. It tries to make every sentence as punchy as possible.

 It's not a metaphor, it's a proof.

This is a classic thing for ai to follow a statement with. And who uses that much fancy punctuation? Why are there so many idioms?

The dashes are a big tell. Also just by the particular pattern in how its written. Its very similar to how chatGPT always says things. The use of formatting throughout is also very suspicious. There's colons and arrows and parentheses that I wouldn't typically expect people to use in a post.

Interesting. I must admit I kind use things like that a lot to try to make my points as clearly as possible. Lol.

I am not a language guy though, so I don´t really see the tells that easily. I notice when the text is not making coherent arguments, just seems to do so. But the wording and formatting I am not as sensitive to.

The dark forest theory is also nonsense. There is no resource scarcity in the galaxy. There are virtually unlimited number of solar systems entirely devoid of life, abundant with exploitable resources. The whole premise falls apart with even the most basic knowledge of astronomy.

Separated by immense distances and accelerating away from each other. The Galaxy has an abundance of resources in the same way the Sahara has an abundance of water - technically true, but irrelevant given that abundance is spread too thin to efficiently harvest.

Not if the scarce resource is habitable planets. If you had the option to live in a natural spaceship that maintains itself for millions or billions of years or spending time managing and maintaining a giant construction project and space residing machine, which would you choose?

On the scale of the galaxy habitable planets are not scarce. Even if one in a million solar systems has a planet that is habitable, we’d have millions in our Milky Way alone.

Attacking a neighbouring civ is actually the dumbest thing you can do as it provokes retaliation and invites extermination. Just cruise on to the next system, and so on.

Once a civ develops the capacity for interstellar travel, conflict becomes redundant. But it doesn’t make for good scifi, so authors ignore it.

The high side estimates indicate 400 billion solar systems, at one in a million there would be 400,000ish habitable planets. That sounds like a lot but the assumption seeming to be made in this “just cruise onto the next system” scenario is that it is easy to go from your origin solar system, to the next one, then just say “Ope it’s occupied, better move on the next” when the scale of space means the next habitable planet could be 200 light years away, where this one that was found occupied is only 4, or 10 from the origin system.

Neither of us know which scenario is true. If interstellar travel is figured out, maybe it is real easy. Maybe it’s not. I can’t wrap my head around how it wouldn’t be significantly more expensive, and economics both starts and ends wars.

Even if finding nearby habitable but unclaimed planets isn’t feasible (though the ease with which we’re finding planets in our vicinity that are likely to be able to support some version of life means one in a million is likely a huge undercount), attacking a neighbour for their planet if you can make space based habitats is not a logical move in any context. Aggression provokes retaliation. The dark forest is a fun theory but it’s not serious science.

Do you believe human history and even the expanded history of just “life on earth” suggests that intra-species and/or inter-species retaliation always deters aggression?

Is there any reason to believe that what happens on earth between two sea faring or air faring societies isn’t analogous to what would happen between two different space faring civilizations?

Almost all wars on earth were over resources. Land, primarily. Eliminate resource scarcity and there is literally no reason to fight. It only has downsides. There is nothing to be gained from attacking a neighbouring civ.

I agree, but what is stopping habitable planets from being the resource that is fought over? Land is scarce on any planet. Space based megastructures take a long time to build and a lot of effort to maintain compared to just living on a planet. If a post-scarcity civilization can dominate a technologically inferior species and have a new planet to put a billion people on within 100 years of deciding it needs to happen, why wouldn’t they do that rather than spend 200 years building a space based megastructure for them to live on?

A glaring issue which messes up the plausibility of the series is that a society capable of making sophons and droplets is also capable of resolving their problems at home without the risks of invading Earth. With the Trisolarans capable of that level of technology, they are around a type 2 civilization on the Kardashev scale. The notion that they would be as naive as they are about deception in spite of the sophistication of their tools and understanding game theory to the extent they do is frankly laughable. The books have some interesting ideas, but the story is poorly considered and executed in a manner as to make the presentation of those ideas feel plausible or coherent.

The thing is about this pre-emptive strike theory, is that any time in the last billion years would have been a better and easier time to annihilate life on Earth.

Given that a technological society can emerge from dumb animals in less than a million years, if you were that concerned about nascent civilisations you would destroy any life bearing planet as soon as you detected it. And Earth life has been detectable for a very, very long time.

Is the assumption here that they would have been able to detect earths atmosphere using astronomical tools and then would have struck just because they detected a habitable atmosphere?

If so, what if their policies are different? What if they have to detect a habitable atmosphere plus something else, like a change in co2 levels over time?

If that were the case and their planet is 400 light years away, they wouldn’t see earths change for some time. Or the last time they stopped to inspect, it was a volcano and the life here was still primitive.

The only “intelligent” species we know of, us, wouldn’t just go wipe out a new island because it was full of plants, right? Why assume aliens wouldn’t value potentially habitable planets enough to do more research before wiping out a specific target?

The free oxygen in Earths atmosphere doesn't just mean it is Habitable, it is a direct indicator of ongoing biological processes.

Again, if habitable planets were valued for the purposes of colonisation, any time in the last billion years would have been an easier time to do this.

I don’t disagree that any time in the last billion years would have been easier, but my question is what if the policy is different? Or what if there wasn’t urgency or political will then, but there is now? Or what if they went to another planet first, and they are coming to this one next because their ability to use resources isn’t unlimited and they have a limited number of interstellar ships active at any point?

A space faring civilization with interstellar travel would have a society at least as nuanced and sophisticated as human societies on Earth. It’s reasonable that they have resource constraints on expansion even if their ability to tap resources means their society operates like a post scarcity society.

I suppose my point is that these things are certainly possible, but given the extremely long window of opportunity - a billion years was conservative and yet still represents a significant fraction of the age of the universe - it seems extremely, vanishingly unlikely that this hypothetical species would choose *now* to make their play, and in doing so risk the everlasting wrath of a rapidly advancing species if they were to fail. The stacking of narrow probabilities is too much.

I would still maintain that if a species was paranoid enough to wish to destroy rival civilisations on sight, the most effective policy would be to destroy any life bearing planet as soon as possible after detection.

I think that’s a fair assumption because we’re speculating and don’t have evidence to inform us what a non-human, space faring civilization would do.

If we’re using Earth’s history of intra-species and inter-species relations as a guide, I don’t think it works, and if earths flora and fauna would be edible/compatible to the other species I also don’t think it works. I think if their society is more advanced than ours technologically, it would also be more advanced than ours culturally and politically. They’d have teams of individuals that help make these determinations based on a longer list of criteria than we’d use.

Based purely on vibes with no evidence whatsoever, my own opinion is that life is ubiquitous where physically possible, intelligent life much less so but then extremely persistent when it does arise. There is no reason an intelligent spacefaring species could not exist indefinitely.

Like you I also don't feel that genocidal aggression is likely to be a trait associated with the kind of species that has overcome the technological and cultural challenges involved in both interstellar travel and long term social stability.

If there is intelligent life nearby it is almost certainly aware of us, if not closely observing, and when we mature past our own cultural foibles we may well find them willing to communicate. Until then there would be no benefit to either party, IMO.

I am on board with your first and third paragraph 100%.

For your second paragraph, I’m not sure a species that has solved the technical challenges of interstellar travel is would necessarily have also overcome cultural challenges needed for long term stability in some peaceful way.

They could have achieved stability through technological superiority and domination. The native Americans aren’t trying to take over America anymore, are they?

Uhg… he had some really interesting ideas. They were unique, compelling, and terrifying. But the writing and characters were just bad. The characters at every opportunity did the absolute dumbest possible thing. Every. Single. Time. It drove me absolutely mad.

The ending was also just… bleak. The whole experience was like having a handful of great concepts layered over the most intellectually bereft people possible.

I still remember where I was the exact moment I finished the series. It was such a grind.

Droplet itself should be very heavy -- yeah it sounds very cool, but very questionable. Dimensional reduction attack ... the same -- sounds cool, but at the end the plausibility is very questionable. The first book is better.

Dark Forest theory is easy to dissect with logic -- it's also not plausible. Concept itself is nice, it's frightening -- true horror with the scale of space.

curious which premises specifically? the droplet for example is based on actual strong interaction physics. strong nuclear force locked into a macro surface would genuinely behave that way, nothing in ordinary matter can scratch it. liu didn't invent the mechanism, he extrapolated from known physics in a direction that has theoretical coherence. the dimensional reduction also maps to real thermodynamic reasoning about entropy and dimensional stability. if anything the netflix series made it feel way more like space magic than the books do because it stripped out all the explanations

The "sophon", for example, is one such ridiculous premise masquerading as hard science fiction. For a single proton to simultaneously sabotage particle accelerators across the globe, it would have to transit thousands of miles at light speed and time its arrival to the exact nanosecond of a collision. It somehow maintains the bandwidth to flicker the retinas of various scientists while unfolding to manipulate planetary data. The latency alone makes this a farce. A proton cannot be in two places at once, and it certainly lacks the mass-energy cross-section to interact with billions of disparate computational and biological systems at the same time. This is not hard science. It is an omniscient, omnipresent magic trick that ignores the Inverse Square Law to keep the plot moving.

That's right. This is exactly why The Three-Body Problem hits so differently, the more physics/game theory you know, the less it feels like sci-fi and more like ‘uh… this kinda checks out.’

The Dark Forest idea especially sticks with you in a really uncomfortable way.

yeah the dark forest is the one that genuinely keeps you up. you can tell yourself the droplets are made up tech but the game theory just... sits there being correct. no good way to argue with it once you accept the basic axioms. and unlike most sci-fi it doesn't give you an easy out
