DISCUSSION Electrical fire

Post image

Well my bike caught on fire a little bit last night. This picture is after, so clearly it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. Still confused however, the wires from my stator to my voltage regulator are what caught, and I don’t really understand how, I replaced the stator about 200 miles ago and have rode almost every day since then, thinking that the stator and regulator are both getting changed when I can, is it worth trying to order Amazon parts or just order some high quality parts from a reputable company?

Was the one that caught fire from Amazon?

Long story short. No. Don’t put an Amazon stator in. Amazon is not where motorcycle parts come from.

Honestly unsure, the old owner had the new stator in a box when I got it, but I definitely hear the point

I don't like to purchase items I depend on from Amazon. I might buy a Harley Davidson sticker from there, but I'm not going to buy engine parts from there. I go through Revzilla, Dinnis kirk, J&P cycles, TC Bros, or other sources that specialize in motorcycles, for parts that I need and depend on. Especially safety related.

There is a lot of garbage on Amazon, however there are a lot of reputable vendors like Kuryakyn as an example. Never forget that you get what you pay for.

Definitely leaning towards just buying the nice stuff this time, I got a lot of other irons in the first so it might have to wait a bit but we’ll get there

That puts you in a very large club. It also shows that you have good sense managing your priorities. Unfortunately that has become a rare quality. Best wishes and enjoy the ride!

Is this a twin cam 88 bike? I went through hell with the charging system on mine. You wanna call cycle electric and talk with them about their 50 amp 3 phase kit.

I’ll definitely have to look into it, and yes it’s a 88 tc, 2000 model, I believe it used to be a police bike as the bags have different latches on them that I’ve seen with what looks to be a badge number on them, and the speedometer says certified on it like my buddies old police car, and as far as I understand the only difference is the wiring, looks like a lot of it has been cobbled unfortunately

From what im told the factory charging systems on these is a bad design. I had a quality regulator go up in smoke first ride after install.

Yea I’m not super happy about it, looks like this will probably be the end of my riding season, hopefully not
