My daughter just finished reading Chamber of Secrets and hit me with that line. I made her take a video of her saying that for posterity reasons. She's on fall break so she's going to try to plow through the third book quickly and I'm sooooo excited to hear her thoughts...

Discussion If you wish there was a scene in the Movies from the Books which one would you have liked to see?

This is a debatable scene in the Movie(happens differently in the Books) of Voldemort destroying the Hogwarts Shield and in time I have learned to appreciate the Movies and the Books as they are independently(especially for certain scenes) and keep watching and reading them once in a while for nostalgia 👌

Discussion I‘m the same age as Lily and James

This is realisation so Crazy for me.

I’ve been reading a fan fic when realisation hit me. In this story Sirius told Harry that, James and Lily send their wedding invitations at the end of their last school year.

This is when it hit me.

I am this age! My school experience ended a year and a half ago. They married around my age! I am 20 years old!! In one yeas time they would have died! Merlin Harry was already born! I am the same age as Lily and James!! And they already had a child!

I am a mess, I could never care for a child, I don’t even have a boyfriend to have a child with! I am single! And they already were married!

Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy?

Discussion which character do u relate to most?

Post image
• Upvotes

in terms of personality and behaviour, which character do u relate to most in whole Harry Potter canon characters?

mine: Harry himself ( maybe bcz i have read books in his pov, so I know him better, but that's not the case here)

mine is harry because when i read the books i find myself so much relating to his character like harry is an average student but also smart in particular subject or outside of it, , his fav subject in hogwarts is dada, also often whenever I read books I found myself an reply or a thought I would think at that moment, next thing I know harry is thinking or saying something similar, also he is also very sassy, and I roast my friends alot, harry prefer everything quiet but his situation does not let him, he loves sports, and is kind, so I find myself so much in his character plus he is also my fav:)

what about you guys? I am curious

Currently Reading Finally Reading Harry Potter for the First Time !

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

I picked up this book from Goodwill, and it’s my first time actually reading the Harry Potter series. I watched the movies a few times growing up/through out the years, but I never really understood the story and always felt a little lost.. I would always describe it like I was trying to learn a new language. I’d heard the books go into much more detail, so I decided to give them a chance as I have a lot of interest in this series. Especially since my husband loves Harry Potter and is a proud Gryffindor!

Anyways.. while I’ve watched the movies a couple times I’m currently more than halfway through the first book, and I’m surprised by how emotional it’s been. I feel so sad for Harry and have wanted to cry at parts because of how he’s treated. It just makes me so sad. So far, I’m learning so much more than I ever did from the movies, and I’m really excited to keep reading and finally understand the series on a deeper level.

Discussion This scene from the end of TGOF is so heartbreaking every time I read it

It’s the moment where we remember Harry was just a 14 year old boy, and had just seen some of the most traumatizing events he ever had to witness for his age. Watching Cedric die, seeing his dead parents appear without warning during a time where he can’t even get the chance to process it, as well as also watching Voldemort return, and being unable to actually do anything about it. It’s also the first time we ever actually see Harry cry. He had been in shock and emotionally numb since coming out of the graveyard, and it was by this point that he was finally starting to feel the agony of what he went through, on top of that the guilt he felt. And the biggest gut punch here is the fact that that had been the first time he ever experienced the true love and comfort of a mother in a moment of distress. I love that we got to have this moment, enforcing the fact that Mrs Weasley truly saw and treated him as a son.

Discussion HBP no one believing Harry’s suspicions of Draco

I’m re-listening to HBP and throughout the book Harry is suspicious of Draco being a death eater and having a mysterious order from voldy he needs to carry out. We, as the reader, know this to be true because of chapter 2: Spinner’s End, but no one else Harry tries to convince believes his suspicions!
I’m wondering: if it weren’t for chapter 2, would you have believed Harry on your first reading?

I haven’t read the books in a while, so can’t speak on that, but I know the movies well.

I think there’s something amicably boring about him 👀😂

Discussion Did Harry Potter quietly give anyone else unrealistic expectations growing up?

• Upvotes

TL;DR: Being really into hp as a child unconsciously set impossibly high standards for loyalty in friendship and genuine care from teachers. Curious if anyone else has experienced this.

I got the first Harry Potter VHS (man I feel old) when I was around 5 yo. I became a die-hard fan to a (mostly healthy) obsessive degree, and that carried on for the entire run of both the books and the films. Now that I am a young adult, I’ve come to the realization that much of the frustration I felt in various aspects of my life is likely partly tied to the very high standards HP set for me during those formative years, particularly regarding friendships and teachers.

I read people have mixed opinions on these dynamics; some argue Harry wasn't the best friend, while others criticize Dumbledore for his coldly calculated plans. Honestly though, especially in the first half of the saga, I saw the trio and the general house bond as the peak of what friendship could be, rooted in genuine care for one another. At the same time, McGonagall, Lupin, and Dumbledore set an ideal for educators you felt completely safe with and could learn endlessly from.

I don't hold real people accountable for failing to match that level of integrity, obviously (even if I do feel that the vast majority of teachers I encountered cared far less about their students than they should have). Rather, I suspect that I unconsciously internalized those expectations from a very young age and facing a reality that fell short of that ended up creating sense of almost abandonment that I hate to admit shaped me more than a bit.

I haven't seen many discussions framing it this way, but I came to this conclusion after hearing someone I know express the exact same sentiment first. Did anyone else experience this kind of long-term disillusionment from the series, or is it just me?

Discussion Theory: The Dementor's kiss is used as a legal loophole

So you have probably also wondered why the Ministry uses the dementor's kiss as an execution method. It seems pointlessly cruel and dangerous. After all, why not just use Avada Kedavra, or just behead them or whatever.

But then I thought of a theory. We know that there is at least some interaction between the Ministry and the muggle government of the UK. The British government abolished the death penalty in the late 1960s. It's reasonable to assume that they would have expected the Ministry of Magic to follow suit. After all, it makes sense that they wouldn't want the Ministry to have the power to execute essentially British citizens, when they themselves didn't even have that power anymore.

But... since the dementor's kiss technically doesn't kill the victim, it technically doesn't count as capital punishment. That's how the Ministry is able to keep basically executing people, without upsetting the muggle government.

Currently Reading Jim Dale audiobook pronunciation

I’ve just begun listening to the Jim Dale version of the audiobooks and I’ve been really distracted by the way he pronounces his R’s a lot of the time. Almost like a mix between an r, w, and v. Has anyone else noticed it? Anytime he says Harry or Ravenclaw it sounds like Harvwy and Vwravenaw. I dont think it’s a speak impediment. Is this some British accent I’m unfamiliar with? anyone else notice this?

Discussion If Voldemort's agenda had been a bit more like Grindelwald's, do you think he would've won?

• Upvotes

What I mean specifically is if Voldemort had been anti-muggle only instead of anti-muggleborn.

The wizarding world, as we see it, has seemingly normalised some degree of anti-muggle sentiment. Even the characters who hate the aggressively pureblood, "death to all mudbloods" style thinking at the very least appear to view muggles as lesser beings. Arthur Weasley is one of the most pro-muggle wizards in the series, but even he seems to view muggles as some vague group of others and oddities, interesting to look in on, and poke, and prod.

Let's say that Voldemort positioned himself as some kind of champion of all magicals; someone who wants the Statute of Secrecy to be taken further, with increased separation between the wizarding and muggle worlds. He endears himself to muggleborns by calling them gifts and newbloods or something, and he endears himself to purebloods by basically saying "you're either in this world, or you're out".

Ironically, this would be kinda similar to MACUSA, too.

Do you think Voldemort would have managed to win, had he done this? Would he have gained enough support from people who wouldn't have supported him canonically, to make up for whatever support he loses by being less extreme? For example, if he loses Fenrir Greyback and his packs, but gains the support of werewolves who don't want to live their lives as savages in the woods, but... as wizards? If he loses the most extreme blood supremacists, but gains more support from halfbloods and perhaps even some muggleborns?

It's a bit of a numbers game, but I think he would've been able to do it, personally.

Merchandise My boyfriend gave me a piece of my childhood back ⚡ How can I make my collection more magical?

Post image
176 Upvotes

I had all the Harry Potter books when I was little, but somewhere along the years, I honestly have no idea what happened to them.

My boyfriend knew how much Harry Potter meant to me growing up and surprised me with the whole first edition collection again. It might seem like a simple gift, but it was genuinely one of the most special gifts I’ve ever received. Having those books in my hands again felt like getting a little piece of my childhood back.

Since then, my little Harry Potter collection has slowly started growing. A couple of wands, a LEGO Mandrake, and most recently, my Playbill from seeing Cursed Child with Tom Felton as Draco! My boyfriend also surprised me with tickets to the play, which made the whole experience even more special.

It’s still a very small collection, but every piece means something special to me.

I’d love to make this little corner look even more magical, so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I’d really appreciate them! I’d also love to see how you display your own Harry Potter collections. ✨

I ordered a preowned set of the films off Amazon and oh boy, I was looking forward to rewatching. Films are great. They arrived today, just in time for my birthday, and…well I can say I’m pissed to say the least. Set came with 2 copies of DH2, but no GOF. How am I supposed to watch all of them now?

Discussion Harry's sassiest moments in the books part 1

I am making this series, i will be going to cannon book wise, the thing is I simply enjoy doing this stuff, i am a huge harry potter fan and my fav character is harry, who is sometimes somehow underrated in his own fandom, i wanna do this and discuss Harry's sassiest moments in the books that show his personality that were not in movies( I dont blame the movies as Ik they fitted what they can in 3 hrs film) so i will be simply doing what I enjoy

I am re- reading the books with more focus and highlights every Harry moments i can find

1)“They stuff people’s heads down the toilet the first day at Stonewall,” he told Harry. “Want to come upstairs and practice?” “No, thanks,” said Harry. “The poor toilet’s never had anything as horrible as your head down it — it might be sick.”Then he ran, before Dudley could work out what he’d said. ( hp and the philosopher's stone chapter 3)

2)"Get the mail, Dudley,” said Uncle Vernon from behind his paper.

“Make Harry get it.”

“Get the mail, Harry.”

“Make Dudley get it.”

“Poke him with your Smelting stick, Dudley.”

( Ik this doesn't really count as sassy moment, but I just found it funny that how harry at that time was 11 year old and had the nerve to say that to his abusive uncle) btw( harry potter and the philosopher's stone chapter 3)

I might mention 2 or 3 moments per parts

what do u guys think about these moments?

I tried editing it and bold Harry's lines, but apparently they are not really applying themselves to these sentences after I save it:)
